Yelp readers, please learn from my mistake and don't do what I did... I almost always book a vendor…read morewho has been rated / reviewed but for our family trip to Homer and the #1 event we had planned, a fishing charter, I thought I could save myself a few bucks and find a guy myself. I found a captain who had a boat and a website and a Facebook page and everything, and I paid in full in advance to reserve a trip with him... And the night before we were supposed to go, he bailed on us with a weak excuse of why he couldn't take us. We had a really set schedule and only the only possible day to go out fishing, so our chance to go fishing was almost ruined. At that late hour, I wasn't even sure I'd be able to reach another charter company, let alone find space for a party of 6 the next day. I am SO, so grateful to Homer Ocean Charters who took my call late in the evening and went above and beyond to be able to find a boat and a captain to take my family out the next day as we had originally planned. Especially Artis (my sincere apologies if I've misspelled that!) in the front office, who was so kind and helpful. Homer ocean charters got us all set up with Captain Brian and deckhand Ben, two of the most genuinely good guys you could ever hope to meet. They took such great care of us, made sure we had a great time, and of course, made sure we caught lots of fish!! Both guys were just incredible with the two kids in our group (ages 11 & 13). We really could not have asked for a better time! Please, please do yourself a favor. Stop looking now, and just book with Homer Ocean Charters. They will truly make your trip!! And whatever you do...DON'T trust a company not rated / reviewed! I never will again!

We recently went out with Homer Ocean Charters on the Bay Explorer (Captain Max), and the…read moreexperience was far below what we expected, especially compared to their older reviews. The boat felt oversold -- about 20 guests with only two deckhands to assist. That made the trip feel crowded and chaotic, with lines constantly crossing and several people losing fish. Between the long ride out (roughly two hours each way) and the large group size, we ended up with very little actual fishing time, maybe half an hour in total. Nobody in our group was able to hit their limit. Afterward, we tried to share our concerns directly with management, but instead of listening, they argued with us and came across as pretty rude. Overall, the trip felt impersonal and poorly run. For the price and the reputation, we expected much more

A Truly Unforgettable Experience -- Above & Beyond in Every Way…read more Captain Steve's Fishing Lodge in Ninilchik deserves every bit of praise I can give. Our trip was planned last-minute while my brother was home on a short military leave before he had to return to Guam. We wanted to go fishing and sprinkle our dad's ashes to mark the end of probate, and this crew turned what could've been a heavy, emotional trip into something profoundly meaningful and beautiful. Despite being closed for renovations, Captain Steve and his wife, LeAnn, reopened just for us because our dad had fished with them many times over the years. They even rearranged their own holiday plans to make sure we could come. That alone speaks volumes about the kind of people they are. From start to finish, they handled everything. They helped us secure a last-minute car rental, cleaned and processed all our fish for shipping home, and woke up early--on what should've been their day off--to make sure we were fed, warm, and taken care of. Leann cooked five-star meals for us every day--breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She truly is the "hostess with the mostest!" And the highlight we'll be talking about forever? They cooked fresh crab for us right on the boat. Pulled from the ocean and cooked and eaten by hand on the spot--it doesn't get any better than that. We were also incredibly blessed with wildlife sightings. Over the course of our trip, we saw two pods of orcas, playful sea otters, several seals, and even a bald eagle--which meant more to us than words can say. The eagle is a special spirit animal for my brother and I, a symbol we deeply associate with our dad, and seeing one felt like a sign that he was with us. Captain Steve chose the perfect place for us to spread our dad's ashes--one of the spots he used to take him fishing. Evan, the sweetest and most attentive deckhand, helped us every step of the way and even brushed the snow off our car before we left. Every detail was handled with genuine care and kindness. This wasn't just a fishing trip. It was a healing experience, a family moment, and a memory we'll carry for the rest of our lives. We felt cared for, supported, and welcomed like family. We can't wait to come back in the summer for halibut, but for now, the salmon--and the memories--are perfect. Thank you, Captain Steve's team, for making our trip so special and unforgettable. -The Vuicich Family

Well, this is kind of a different review I am writing…read more I actually never took a fishing trip out on the waters of Homer, Alaska with this...North Country Halibut Charters. But... I was walking along the boardwalk area of the downtown Homer Spit section and a boat tour cruise had just completed their expedition. Now afterwards, the passengers were getting a firsthand glimpse into watching their freshly caught king salmons being fileted. Little did I know that after you go out on a fishing charter for the day...it's only customary to then return to the pier and clean and filet your catches. Lol, I have zero fishing experience. So...in getting to watch a professional fisherman/woman do all this for their passengers and witnessing it all with my very own eyes was fascinating! I even recorded it live and added it to my YT Channel...for entertainment purposes only, lol. It was a terrific little exposition, in just how easy it was for the girl to cut open the salmon while efficiently demonstrating her knifing skills. And there was a huge crowd standing around and watching her too. I asked the fisherwoman if I could take a few photos and record a little of her precise fileting and she said that would "be okay and it's fine"...pretty normal for what tourists like myself typically like to do when being exposed to such a cool demonstration. In fact, the girl had a tip jar situated right beside the table counter and of course I happily left her $5 for allowing me to watch. I was quite impressed with her experience, comfortabilities and technique handling such large fish! You could just tell this fisherwoman has been out on the high seas plenty of times and appearing so natural at it all. Unfortunately, I never did take a fishing cruise while in Homer, but after enjoying this fileting demonstration, I started thinking that maybe I should consider participating in a charter in my future travels to all these incredible Alaskan seaports...where they're famously known for catching some of the best fish in the world! In the end, I just appreciated how the tour group caught 5 salmon on their adventure and were now going to enjoy a fresh seafood dinner. Also, the fish they caught were king salmon which I believe are the most prestigious type of salmon you can find. This fileting demonstration was such a pleasant surprise as I was leisurely walking the boardwalk area of downtown Homer Spit. I'm glad I got to experience it.

You buy your fishing tags at the office and it lets you catch 2 halibuts and 1 king Salmon. We went out about 25 miles out to do our fishing. After fishing for 4 hrs we cruised up the inlet to try our luck on salmon. Out of 10 of us on the boat I was the only one to catch a 24lb king salmon. After we got back to the dock they filet the fish for ya. If your looking to ship back your fish they will take care of all shipping for ya. Old captain that seemed to rub people the wrong way is gone and retired. Fools gold was our ship, and was in fine enough condition, head was clean, plenty of room for the people in and out. We had the pleasure of being with Capitan Dave C. and Deckhand/first mate Ash. The two of them really made the trip incredible. We went with a group size of 7 plus a baby, and they were both insanely accommodating to the little one, let us setup a pack and play in the berth, even checked in on her when we were out fishing and she was sleeping. Tons, and I mean tons, of great conversations, hysterics laughter, and learning a boat load about the area, the fish types, everything under the moon, honestly. Both of them gave clean and consice rules, what to do, where to be in the boat, showed us how to bait, where to land the catch. Very patient folks, and made this excursion top notch. If you want to go halibut fishing, and want to have a good time, go with them. You'd be making a mistake to go with anyone else. Tl;dr: Awesome crew, awesome fish, very nice and would never fish with anyone else given the choice. All limited out, every one of us, with some impressive catches.

Rob's Trophy Charter booked 17 people on this…read moresmall boat, even though their web site said they would not normally do this (web site says: "We don't like to crowd the boat and normally she averages between 8-12 passengers a trip"). We lined the rails, one person every 3 feet. Because we had so many people fishing, everyone kept getting tangled with each other. I had to reel in my fish, and two other people's fish, because we were all tangled up. It was a lot of work for sure, reeling in 3 fish at the same time, and no fun since they were just being dragged like dead weight. When we left the pier, the captain said that we could go to the spot where we could catch big Halibut, but after trying to fish there, and everyone getting tangled up, we had to cruise another hour, 3 hours total, to arrive at a place where all the fish were relatively small. After about 30 minutes, everyone had their 2 fish limit of small Halibut and we cruised another 3 hours back to port. On top of all this, we were recommended to use "Home Fish Processing", instead of "Coal Point Fish Processing", Coal Point was a closer fish processing company located right there on the pier with the boat. We had fish processed before, and the processor always weighs the fish when you give it to them so everything is up front and expectations are known. Homer Fish Processing does not weigh your fish for you so that you know how much fish you will get frozen. Instead; they just pick it up, take it to their plant and process them. I was not comfortable with this as all of us on the ship, including 2 Boat Charter Captains themselves that were on board, thought that our 2 filleted fish should weight about 20-25 pounds. I picked them up, and based on the weight of our luggage, thought that 20-25 pounds seemed about right. When we picked up our fish all we received was 12 pounds of Halibut fillets each person, basically 6 pounds per fish. On top of that, Home Fish Processing charged us about double what Coal Point Fish Processing quoted us. This is not right! I can't help but wonder if Home Fish Processing is keeping some of the customers fish to sell themselves. Also, is Bob's Trophy Charters getting a kick back from Homer Fish Processing to refer them to customers? In my opinion, something does not smell right hear. I would like to give a shout out to the 2 female deck hands, Cori and another young lady. They worked very had to untangle everyone so many times and did great.
