Anchor Bar is a local bar and grill in the dive bar tradition. Locals clearly like this place, as it was full when arrived and full when we left. It's burger main plate fare is excellent, juicy and homemade. For just 4.75 a juicy massive cheeseburger is made to order. My own plate of 2/3 Lb double "Anchor Burger" was just 6.75 and included a huge side of fresh cut fries. The food was as billed by the locals.. excellent. The staff was billed as intentionally grumpy, but I found them friendly enough, though so overloaded they certainly didn't dote on your table. This was expected and you just need to get a bit of east coast attitude to ask for things appropriately :). Overall, it's not the best burger I've ever had, but it ranks up in the top. We always make a trip over to Anchor Bar when we visit Duluth in the summer. The Anchor Burger is a great deal. But this is not a high-end, fancy restaurant -- If you are looking for "white glove" service this isn't the spot. But if you like a funky feel and don't mind that the bar might need a coat of varnish, this is a great place. We have never had a bad experience. This place can't be beat for the price. A little grimy, menus stuck together, no syrup in the tap for Sierra Mist (probably the first people to order soda here in years) and seating is tight but the food was excellent! Fries were fresh, meat wasn't frozen patty pucks, and the service was fast and friendly. We went at 4 pm and the place was packed, guessing if you go at normal meal times you will be waiting but it's totally worth it. Don't like nice, informed, but no nonsense servers? There aren't options so stay away. Walked in and seemed a comfy place. Barkeep was extremely rude about not making any specialty drinks. Asked for a Moscow mule. Got denied cause "I don't know that". As I tell my wife, you can't find the diamonds if you don't go digging. We were visiting Superior and were looking for lunch. The Anchor Bar popped up on yelp with good reviews so we decided to give it a shot. Boy were we happy. Typical bar decor and layout, but exceptional staff. Friendly and helpful, especially Mary. Not a huge selection on the menu, but I have found that the more compact the better the overall quality. Their burgers are wonderful - wife had the bacon cheeseburger and I had the Hawaiian burger. Done thoroughly but very juicy and tasty. Bloody Mary's are excellent. Will be back and highly recommend! P.S. The burgers are inexpensive and they blow away anything you find in Duluth if you happen to be staying there. Try some of the unique burgers like olive burger or cream cheese burger. The burgers were good, not the best I've had but good enough to still eat again. The French fries are hand cut fries and are delicious and have that real potato taste. We went here in the winter and it was FREEZING. We wore our jackets the whole time and didn't take of gloves until our food came. I would suggest coming here on a nice Spring or Fall day if you want to try it out. Lots of knickknacks for décor which was neat to look at. The music was loud and we had a veteran with hearing problems so he wasn't able to converse with us since he couldn't hear what we were saying from across the table. Whenever I am out this way and heading between Wisconsin and Minnesota this is a must stopover. The bar/grill itself was originally a favorite watering hole for longshoreman off the boats in the local harbor. It now serves a broader clientele. Low Key and relaxed atmosphere. The burgers are delish! Thick meaty and juicy! My new favorite is the Reuben burger - I love me some sauerkraut. The other favorite is the olive burger. Salty green olives and cream cheese. YUM! Atmosphere is unique....definitely a dive bar atmosphere, simple and straight forward menu, fairly priced, decent portions. However the staff was not friendly nor concerned that I sat at the bar for 5 minutes without being greeted or acknowledged, they were more concerned about talking to the regulars and deciding what beer they wanted after they got off their shift. Anchor Bar was definitely an interesting experience. I would love to give them a 5 star review but there was a glaring problem with our visit. The burgers everyone ordered were great! Plenty of flavor and food came quickly! The prices were VERY reasonable for the amount of food we got. The issue we had was with our waitress, she acted almost inconvenienced with us being there, always in a hurry to get away from our table only to stand around the bar. She was NOT helpful in menu options. When asked about what's popular she simply stated "I don't really eat here so I don't know." It was definitely an interesting experience but the food was worth the hassle. *NO CREDIT CARDS* They do have an ATM, but it's 2020, you should accept credit cards. read more

This was probably the worst place we could have gone. The only thing that was good was the beer...mainly because you can't really screw that up (especially when it comes in a bottle). The food took FOREVER, and by that I mean 45 minutes (for a cheeseburger). When we did finally get the food, it was dry and overcooked and the cheese was rubbery. My guess it was a frozen patty that they warmed in the microwave. I think McDonalds would have been a better choice. Had a lousy experience both times we tried this place. Totally felt like we were not welcome. First time in 2018, there were several empty tables, but were told the whole section was closed (even though others were seated in it). Second time in 2020, same song different verse, and when they "allowed" us to be seated, the waitress threw a soggy rag to us and asked us to wipe it down ourselves. The burgers are "meh." No major flavor. Think meatloaf. Other than the cool way it's decorated, I can only compliment the decent fries, and the nice cook who finally did the waitress's job the second time we were there and brought us our food. This places scores huge points in my book for a couple of reasons: 1) The ambiance is great! It is pretty run down, but the old character of the space is quite quaint. The Anchor Bar was recently featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive ins, and Dives as well! We scored the corner table by the front door, where there are tons of old board games to play! Slapjack was calling our names while we waited for food to arrive. 2) The food is very good and cheap! The boo and I each got a burger and fries, along with a pitcher of beer for a whopping total of $11. Cheap date if you ask me. The blue cheese burger does come drenched in sauce (refer to la photo) so if you just have a like vs love for blue cheese make sure to ask for it on the side. The service was not great, yet I did not mind as the overall experience was so fun. Caution: one must be 21 to enter, so definitely not a place to come with the kids! read more

Sign of a good burger dive bar - your feet slip on the greasy floors walking in and they have boxes of potatoes stacked by the door. This place is tiny and they have weird seating arrangements, but the burgers are good and CHEAP. And they have some unusual toppings including cashews and cream cheese olive spread (which I thought was too much cream cheese, not enough olive.) Better than the burgers though - are the fries. Definitely worth the upcharge. Fresh cut fries - crispy and delicious. Also - no wimpy bottles of ketchup, but rather Costco sized squeeze bottles of Heinz and rolls of paper towels. Great burgers and solid fries in a classic dive bar, what's not to like? Seriously, the Anchor Bar is cramped, dark, crowded with bric-a-brac, and in a nondescript part of town just a few blocks off the bridge over to Duluth and Minnesota...but when the burgers are this good who cares! First off, bring cash. Second, you are on your own to grab yourself a place to sit; it's survival of the fittest and quickest in a joint this small and crowded. Nobody is going to help you out, shove in when and where you can. And if you can, definitely sit at the bar. This ancient, warped, scratched up slab of wood (properly sharply angled back to the keep side so the odd spilled drink doesn't end up all over the patrons) looks about 100 years old and like it has some stories to tell. Same deal with the cavalcade of nautical and other paraphernalia hung, fastened and attached to any surface that isn't moving...and some that are. The menu is simple and to the point, a couple dozen burgers with a few other sandwiches (BLT, grilled cheese, etc.) thrown in and french fries as the lone side. That's it. My first (and so far only) visit I ordered the Baconburger and fries, and it was one of the best burgers I've ever had. Cooked just right, simply, cleanly. Fresh hot fries just the right thickness to get that mix of crispy crunch exterior and starchy interior. Heaven! Food came out of the tiny (and visible from the bar) kitchen surprisingly fast. These folks know what they're doing and they do it well. So if you want a solid burger and fries, a cold beverage to wash it down, dirt cheap, in an authentic neighborhood joint, look no further. Stopped here on our way back during a road trip to Duluth, MN. It was recommended to us from the girl at the Aerostitch Motorcycle Gear Factory in Duluth. It was just AMAZING!!! The burgers were juicy and full of flavour, the onion rings had crispy batter, the fries topped everything off perfectly. We also got two bottles of Cream Soda. It's VERY much a dive, full of regulars. I agree, the regulars do sort of check you out when you go in, but it adds to the charm rather than detracting from it. If we're ever in the area again, we will stop for without question, it was that good. We would even go a little bit out of our way to make it back again :) read more

They only take cash, but they have their own ATM...albeit a dishonest ATM that claims a $2.50 fee while really they gouge you for $3.50. Super cool place. You can tell it's a local's hangout the minute you enter. It's like the juke box zip-screeches to a stop and everyone silently stares at you for a minute, then things resume. The atmosphere is awesome. Dingy, well worn, really cool old sailor stuff. You can sit at old captain's chairs that look like barber shop chairs. There's a little library nook table just to the right of the door. It looks like the private study of capt. Ahab. It takes a minute or 20 to get one of the 6 or 7 tables in the place. The prices are great! The website makes the prices look even better since it's not updated as of 3/16. The gourmet burgers are no longer $3.75, rather $4.00. Fries @ $1.25! And good fries too! I ordered the Anchor burger with fries. Terrific. The anchor burger is 2 big patties with cheese and tomato, and onions, and lettuce for $6.25! It's 2/3 lb. The burgers aren't "gourmet". They are just plain old "good". Nothing fancy but nothing to pass up. I love a good burger. Heck, at those prices, I love 2 good burgers. Service was good. The restroom lock on the door didn't work so I accidentally walked in on a fella. He didn't care a bit. That's what's cool about this place. It's a working man/woman's place that is home away from home. I know some people go to Gronks in Superior to try their six stack challenge. They charge $29.ll for the burger and fries. At Anchor, you can get 3 double burgers stacked with all the fixins, and fries for under $20. Check the pic and you'll see why I'd keep coming back here again, and again. Beware: Cash only!!! Umm hell yes, this place is legit! Husband and I stopped in here on our way back from the long Labor Day weekend spent up north. I won't lie, it was hard to break away from our usual Fitger's stop, but a friend had mentioned this place so we decided to branch out and try new things. So despite being Labor Day, not only were they open, they were *busy*. We managed to snag one of the last tables in the back. Such a cool place, the menu has some tidbits of info on the back (important: no credit cards!). Lots of cool old pictures on the wall, mostly of ships (unsurprisingly given the location). There's a good variety of burgers but nothing like you'd find at say, Red Cow or G&D - I think this is a positive rather than a disappointment - I fucking LOVE blue cheese burgers, so that's what I got, with fried onions and bacon. They nailed it, my burger was perfect! Decent beer selection given the divey nature of the place. I went with a small Schell's something (Oktoberfest I think) and my husband got a large. The price is great also - 2 burgers, 2.5 beers (the large cost extra obvs) and an order of fries with tip and we paid $22 I think. Helluva deal. We'll be back! read more
