The Pal is also an amusement park with rides like Disneyland, but these machines are sensations for all ages, it seems. A very large terminal allows you to park the car before following the paths in the park: it is convenient and free. We were going to the area that has some of France's only volcanoes. I was really hoping to take…read moreeveryone on a hike but everybody else wanted to go to to Vulcania so Vulcania it is. We had a lot more fun than I expected in a place that ended up being more museum than amusement park. They've got a couple "rides". The little bit of movement coordinated with action on a big screen type of "ride". They've also got several walk through displays about vulcanism and fossilization and they've even got a recreation of a mastodon found only in this region. Rent the headsets!!! The audio tour is offered in four or five languages and there's an enormous amount of information in the recorded segments that's not offered in the printed displays, even the displays in French. The sandwiches at the snack place downstairs were awesome and they sell beer there too! And when you think the fun's all done you get to walk through one of the most beautiful forested parking lots I've ever seen. GO!

But this was an interesting visit with a descent into the crater of a volcano that had been used as a quarry for about 50 years. Highlights: walking around the crater and noticing the variations in the soil, gravel, and vegetation. The two films at the end (a 4-D and a train ride simulation), walking along the rickety old mining equipment catwalks. The kids loved going crazy in the bounce house. If there is a way to take a self guided walk, I recommend that. There are also illuminations and events in the evening to check out.
