That said they do still most of the time serve a good cup of coffee and it has really improved the offerings at the train station. The fact that it is at the station means that despite there being a lot of seats there are often people who have not bought anything sitting around at the tables. Not really an issue for me as I usually just pick something up and then head to the train. It is also recommended to buy a salad or sandwich here rather than on the train. Price is better and the quality is far superior to what is served on the trains. Other than that it is nothing special.

Cafe Berget is the coziest and most adorable little cafe in all of Östragötaland. It's situated in…read morethe very center of Linköping's shopping district, so you can easily take a cup of tea and pie while you're enjoying the city. Sitting literally on top of a little 'berg' (o.k., maybe not literally, it's a small rock) it sits high above all other shops, and you'll have to climb a little winding stone staircase to get to their front door. You enter through a little door that makes you feel like you're about to enter the Hobbit home of Bilbo Baggins. The rest of the tea-house is divided into lots of small rooms that you access through staricases and child-sized door-openings, very topsy-turvy (good luck balancing your tray loaded with tea-mugs and plates full of pie on these tiny stairs!). Each room is decorated in a different baroque color scheme (but most of the furniture is pre-1900s, very quaint). You'll have to jockey with lots of other Berget-goers to get a seat here, which is almost impossible during the lunch and fika hours of summer. I've had to wait out other customers a few times or cram my 3-person party into a 2-person seating area (it's worth it). But enough about their interior, lets talk about PIE. And TEA. Because they do both marvelously. Lemon cream pie, pecan pie, blueberry pie, strawberry pie, pumpkin pie (I've only seen this once though)... the list goes on! You can order any of the pies and I guarantee that you'll be very satisfied (my favorite is the lemon cream, tastes a lot like lemon curd). Then there's the choice of tea, which is difficult as you have an entrire wall filled with large Asian Garden tin containers filled with the stuff. Reds, Whites, Blacks, and Green.... oh, and Coffee of course which is also good (Strong-brew Arvid Nordqvist coffee here). If you don't want pie they have a small selection of cookies, buns and pasteries as well as a few sandwiches. All in all, you have not had a proper fika-experience in Linköping until you visit Berget Cafe & Tehus. (My score: 8/10)

Not so much: Seats along wall uncomfortable. My back lasts about 20 minutes at most. In pain now as I type this, in fact. So don't sit there if you want to hang out. Most tables are tiny. I don't know what we did before Simon's opened a little over a year ago--it has fast become a…read morestaple in our small town's fika scene. With outstanding espresso and regular coffees as well as high-quality baked goods, Simon's is usually my top choice for a stolen hour of reading, latte in hand, for fika with a friend I haven't seen in a while, or simply just for people watching on Storgatan. Their candle-lit tables and animal-skin-clad benches make it a cozy spot even when it is packed with people. And Simon's makes the best coffee in town. Simon's roasts their own coffees (weekly, I think!) in their roaster that's in the back of the cafe--and the freshness and knowledge of coffee shows. Both the regular "bryggkaffe" (filtered coffee) and the espresso are excellent, and there is usually a choice of blends for the bryggkaffe. Simon's also sells bags of their beans--the "Nordic Morning" blend is my favorite for everyday morning coffee, while some of the special edition beans (like the Ethiopian or Kenyan varietals he has had in the past) have been amazing. This year's Julkaffe (a Colombian bean) was perhaps my favorite coffee *ever.* The bullar (sweet buns), breads, and pastries are all excellent. Some of my favorites include the kardemummabulle, the mazarin, the apple cake, and the lemon meringue tartlet. The caprese (tomato-mozzarella) macka (sandwich) is crazy good--I have barely tried any other lunch items because I am addicted to that one! But my husband has had several of the salads and larger sandwiches on their menu and has loved them all. Additionally, Simon's serves kombucha, smoothies and freshly pressed juices, and healthier breakfasts like chia pudding. If you can be there early for lunch (say, ca 11.30) on a Wednesday, don't miss the special sourdough, thin-crust pizzas! Pizzaonsdagar are a special treat at Simon's and only last till all the dough has run out--so going early is a must. Simon's is tied with Babette's for my favorite cafe in Linköping, even though they are quite different in terms of emphasis and atmosphere. Babette's is much larger and has a more shabby chic feeling; Simon's is more Scandi-industrial-modern. Both are cozy and both make outstanding bullar (sweet buns), breads, and pastries. You can't go wrong with either, so have two fikas in Linköping and try them both!

I ordered "Soup of the Day" that turned out to be a very good tomato soup (it was very creamy and tasty and there were bits and chunks of tomatoes in it) that came with free coffee and bread. Boyfriend ordered pancakes that came with jam and whipped cream that looked very good as well. Price is very reasonable. My soup costs 79 SEK and the pancake is 59 SEK. Pretty nice place for a relaxing coffee if you don't want to go to the big chains such as Wayne's or Espresso House.

More importantly the bread, cookies and cakes that they bake and sell are delicious. I always buy my sour dough bread there as they bake a mean loaf (as well as fruit bread of various combinations and walnut bread). They are generous with the loaf size for the price you pay (3 loaves for 68 kr + 8 kr per loaf extra if you pick sour dough). The girls and women that work there all wear the same 1950's Swedish aprons (they're red) that make the whole experience really feel like you're paying a visit to your local bakery. Love it!
