It pains me to write this review as I've been a happy customer for 26 years, but this is my last tankful of propane from Amerigas.
Apparently, several years ago the company subbed out their day-to-day operations to a centralized home office, so the days of being able to call Susan or Jack to hammer out any requests or issues are over-- replaced by cheery but ultimately useless corporate robots somewhere on the other side of the continent.
After postponing (and ghosting on,) three delivery dates due to weather problems and their inability to work around them, I was finally able to get through to national dispatch to set up a good time to be home. It came and went. The next day I called again and was told the driver would be there before noon. He wasn't. I called again and the woman on the other end of the line set me up for an "emergency" delivery. It wasn't, and I told her so on three separate occasions during our (recorded for quality assurance,) conversation. (Go ahead, Amerigas, listen to the call. )
Despite my insistence it was neither wanted nor necessary, she sent out a technician to perform an emergency leak check. Then they sent me a bill for (I kid you not,) $1,000 and change for 245 gallons of propane. (I've never been billed more than $600 for the same amount in all the years I've been here-- and that was before I put in an on-demand water heater that cut my usage by 2/3.) At this writing, the national average for propane is $2.43, and CostCo Bakersfield is charging $2.57.
These bandits hit me up for $4.05/gallon plus delivery! When I called to see if they were serious -- and asked what they were charging new customers-- they hemmed and hawed, and even after I asked to speak to a supervisor, refused to give me a dollar figure. "It varies," they told me. Then, to add insult to injury, in today's mail I received an additional bill for $66 for a "leak check."
If Amerigas is this desperate for money, maybe they should set up a GoFundMe or something, because if this is the way they treat their loyal, long time customers (and their very nice Lake Isabella employees,) they'll be bankrupt within the year. Word to the wise; there are better local alternatives; please consider seeking them out before signing up with, let alone investing in these unaccountable and unapologetic rip-off artists.
