I was referred to American Services Plumbing because I needed a Radon-certified plumber after our basement flooded. We had work done in two areas: one indoor and one outdoor. The indoor work went fine. The outdoor sump pump installation was done while my husband and I were out of town, and we paid in full before returning home. When we got back, we discovered the sump pump had likely been running continuously for up to eight days. A connector had come loose, and water was being cycled back into the pit nonstop. The plumber came back out, admitted he should have replaced the connector originally, and fixed it along with two others. Then, just one day later, it rained and the pump failed completely. It wasn't kicking on, and water was pooling in the pit. They responded quickly again, which I appreciated, and the same plumber removed a return valve that had gotten stuck. Later, I was told that return valve never should have been installed in the first place. At that point, I had completely lost confidence in the quality of work. I spoke with someone from their office who was kind said she would investigate. But when I asked if anything would be done to make it right, such as an apology from management or a partial refund, I was told the matter was closed. The quick response time was the only positive. But multiple preventable mistakes were made, and each was only acknowledged after something went wrong. I trusted this company enough to pay in full before seeing the work, and I regret that. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! Here's why: My wife and I recently purchased and are renovating an 1875 farm house. The house was retrofitted with an HVAC system utilizing flexible duct work and we contacted American Services to assess our system and replace everything with standard metal duct. Doug Drinnen quoted the work after reviewing our home in person, and though his estimate was substantially higher than expected, Doug assured us his expert opinion and craftsmanship would create a much more efficient flow of air and optimize the heating and cooling effort. His technicians arrived with no information regarding the job, asked me how I expected them to do it and had to leave to purchase materials. However, they ultimately completed the task in two days and I was initially happy with the work. A few months later, as the Kansas heat sank in, we quickly realized the home would not cool. I called out a local HVAC service company and he found a faulty fan on the outdoor unit. Upon entering the house he immediately pointed to the duct work and said it is not run properly to move the required amount of air. When I told him we recently had all the duct work done professionally, he laughed and asked if I paid the bill already. He provided a quote to rework their mistakes. I decided to test his theory and called in two additional companies and, without providing any history of previous work, asked if the system is installed correctly. Every technician stated the same thing, the duct work is too small to provide sufficient air movement, there is not enough return air, the duct work needs to be insulated and several runs needed to be separated. I ultimately hired one of these professionals to perform the repairs, as we were working on a very tight schedule with several other contractors. I contacted Doug and informed him of what I had learned and he immediately denied there was ever a problem with their service. He went so far as to accuse all three contractors of lying to me. I then asked for him to reimburse me an amount he felt was reasonable given the circumstances. He refused. He then told me he did exactly as I requested and simply swapped duct for duct. He ultimately decided I was not entitled to a refund because I did not give him the opportunity to fix what he clearly and adamantly said was not broken. I advise anyone to find another contractor and avoid this outfit altogether. I would also advise any previous customers to have their work reviewed, as we almost covered up their shotty workmanship with drywall and would have spent years chasing poor air comfort and premature equipment breakdown. Doug Drinnen has more pride than integrity and does not stand behind his work, nor can the work stand on its own merit. Yesterday in Wichita was a record breaking temperature. We came home at 9 in the evening to find our home was over 80 degrees. When checking outside the compressor was not running. We started searching online for 24 hour ac repair. We called company after company with no answer. The few that did pick up said there was no way they could get out until sometime on Monday. American answered the phone immediately by the tech on call. He agreed to come and check it out. He arrived at midnight and quickly had our ac repaired. He was professional and knowledgeable. The service call was a little more expensive for the 24 hour service. Worth every penny and much cheaper than 2 nights in a hotel. We contracted with American Services to install a mini-split heating and cooling system in our detached shop building. Since we are new to Wichita and don't know any contractors, we had three promising companies come out and give an estimate. Of the three, American Services gave us the most reasonable estimate (in terms of our requirements and the equipment available) and provided all the information we wanted. We were confident in Doug's analysis and recommendations. The installation was scheduled within 10 days, and they arrived on time.
