My mother was referred to SSES on three separate occasions, and each time, the agency failed to establish services for her. The first referral occurred when she was transferred from Boston Elder Services. It took over three weeks for an SSES representative to conduct an in-person intake at her residence. Despite significant delays, we were patient and hopeful the process would improve. Unfortunately, it did not. On two subsequent occasions--once again from Boston Elder Services, and once from a nursing facility--referrals were made well over a month in advance. In both instances, SSES failed to follow through with an intake or the establishment of any services. After waiting two weeks following my mother's relocation to the South Shore, I contacted SSES directly. The case manager informed me that the agency requires at least three weeks to initiate services for new clients, despite the fact that nearly two months had already passed since the original referrals. SSES never established any services for my mother. The agency's consistent lack of responsiveness and coordination had been deeply frustrating and left my mother without essential support during a critical transition period. In stark contrast, our experience with Boston Elder Services was timely, professional, and compassionate. South Shore Elder Services has been, in my experience, the most unresponsive and incompetent agency I've dealt with. I urge the appropriate oversight body to review SSES's intake and referral practices to prevent other families from experiencing similar failures in care.
