There are 2 rinks at Cairns, so it's pretty big. The seating areas are really cold...but it is an ice rink. I did notice there are heaters hovering above the bleachers at Cairns Rink #1...but I don't think they were ever turned on. Dress appropriately. Or, you can watch from the viewing area that is heated with benches overlooking the ice on one end. Locker rooms are also decent...which is always a plus. And hey....when a rink has bathrooms with amenities like toilet paper and soap...WINNING! While I didn't have my skates sharpened there, many of my teammates have said that they do a great job.

The facility itself is fine, but I had a very rude encounter with one of the instructors for my…read moredaughter's itty bitty skate lesson. She spent most of the time fallen on the ice and not being able to get up. This went on for about 30 mins. She was frustrated and sad and started to cry. She reached out for one of the instructors and the lady said to her "do not touch my body, and to get up yourself" very harsh behavior for a 4 year old that has been struggling and crying. I lost it. I do not recommend.

Overall, it's very clean with decent ice and good sized locker rooms. The benches (on the ice) are a little odd....very short seats and there's a fairly significant gap between the floor and the door to head out to the ice. Don't get your skate (or foot!) caught in there. Definitely a design flaw. Still...it's a nice rink with plenty of parking on school grounds.

The 1932 arena was home to the first indoor skating events in Olympic history and of course the 1980 arena is where the USA Men's Hockey Team won gold over the heavily favored Soviet Team. Stepping inside the center was such exciting experience- we were able to see memorabilia's inside the museum, was able to witness intermediate hockey league inside the historic skating arena, was able to see the Olympic skaters dressing rooms and was able to roam around looking on important plaques, photos and banners of Olympic historian athletes. The place is small but gives big opportunity for guests to embrace the world known Olympic history that had happened there.
