We were in El Paso today and since we had a gift certificate from our daughter/spouse, we decided to try out Amar. It was a nice experience. My wife had the Papa Rellena (fried stuffed potato). When I say El Paso gastronomy is on par with the rest of the world, I truly mean it. My friend Anita who's the one of the world's most prolific Yelp writers (by 2010, the roughly 2,000 days the site has existed, Lau has penned about 3,400 posts, making her the second-most prolific Yelper in the world), just wrote an article on Nikkei Japanese Peruvian cuisine, and I thought to myself, "dang, I have to go to LA/OC or Barcelona to try it." It's the latest trend in Houston, Barcelona, etc since the world's 50 best cuisine guide came out and 13 of the restaurants are in Peru! Some background on Nikkei Japanese Peruvian cuisine: Nikkei cuisine is woven through Peruvian standards from jalea to ceviche. Peru has the second largest ethnic Japanese population in South America (Brazil has the largest) and this community has made a significant cultural impact on the country. As with Chifa, the fusion cuisine which emerged from the Chinese community in Peru, Japanese dishes were combined with the flavors and cooking techniques of the indigenous Peruvians to remarkable effect. Nikkei cuisine uses Peruvian ingredients prepared through a Japanese lens. Some purveyors of amazing Nikkei cuisine are: Nobu Matsuhisa (of Nobu), Ferran Adrià (El Bulli), Kurt Zdesar (Chotto Matte), and I would add Chef Tania Peregrino (AMAR) to that list of chefs making a mark with their creative take on Nikkei cuisine. That's right! In the heart of El Paso, we have Nikkei cuisine...I know it because I was invited tonight to a special chef's tasting event, where they paired up specialty dishes with tequilas and mezcals. It was truly an intimate event with Chef Tania and Mezcal Master Pepe, working in tandem to match the flavor profiles of the dishes and to draw out the key notes of the mezcal to the greatest effect. They explained each dish, the thought process behind them, and why the pairing was chosen. To be honest, I never thought I would experience such an extraordinary tasting because: one, I'm a broke mom, and two, these events have wait lists of up to 6 months to a year in other cities. But the beauty of living in El Paso is that it's accessible and it's extraordinarily inexpensive compared to value because we have a beautiful community who wants to share. It was a family affair as the event was personalized with Chef's friends and family. I won't spoil the tasting since she's probably going to have more, but what I will say is that it was delicious, I ate every morsel. There was no wait when my group of 4 arrived on a Friday evening, which I found surprising. We got seated promptly, and our waiter came quickly. From drinks to appetizers to our main entrees, everything was absolutely delicious! Our food came out pretty quick. I personally had some corn, the spinach empanada, and the ribeye. It was so yummy! I would never have thought of coming here and so glad I was open to try something new. The little place is so cute. The wait staff was very informative and helpful in suggesting their dishes. I had the Lomo saltado n tried bites of everyone else plate and although everything was really good I loved the tallarines Verdes. That Peruvian pesto sauce was delectable and the tenderloin was perfectly cooked. We ordered a few appetizers, like the spinach n cheese empanadas and shrimp n cheese empanadas which were probably my least favorite. The tuna nikkei had a finger licking umami sauce and something I'd never try but happy I did . The spicy shrimp app had more flavor than heat. The grilled corn had a very delicious salsa over it that just hit differently. For dessert we tried the alfajores which were good but overly sweet. My favorite dessert was the corn cake served with corn ice cream... if you're thinking gross, you'd miss a great experience. It was so good. Can't wait yo bring my friends here. I absolutely love this place for the food. The past few times I've watched the bartenders eat food (plate and spoon) while making drinks. Literally eating right over the drink. I sat with no food and no drink after eating for 35min watching the staff on their phones and talk in a large group behind the bar. We went to eat here 2 weeks ago, the place is beautiful and the food outstanding! HOWEVER, I placed an order over the phone and all was fine until my husband got home and told me the total was $90. The lomo saltado is listed online at $15.86 and we were charged $24.90. I called the restaurant to ask and the young lady told me that the restaurant updated their menu prices 2 days ago. I am sorry, but this is not a nice way to do business. To top it off, there was barely any meat in the Lomo. Basically we paid for rice, potatoes and tomatoes. I would suggest that when updating your pricing, you update all of your menus. Currently today Mother's Day, your menu pricing reflects different than what's on your menu on your website. What a lovely restaurant! It's beautiful and classy on the inside, with soft lighting and cozy, upscale decor. It's near the college, but too nice and probably out of the price range of college students, so the service here was actually fantastic! I tried a few things: Plant-Based Ceviche: every single part of this was delicious!!! I thoroughly enjoyed the hearts of palm and wasn't really expecting to, but the citrusy dressing and all the other flavors in the bowl went together so well, it was incredible. Ribeye Tacos: also fabulous! The meat had an interesting seasoning, but they were loaded with flavor. The cucumbers and radishes and cilantro and lime and both the green and red sauces that came with it were on point! And, they also cooked the meat how I requested, which was nice. Tiramisu; very good! I ordered it because I can't not order tiramisu if it's on the menu, and it seemed a little unusual at this Mexican/Peruvian restaurant, but it was pretty good. I'd probably try something else next time. Alfajores: I got these to-go for my boyfriend and really enjoyed them, as well! They're like sandwich cookies and taste light and lovely. They all have the caramel filling, but only one has coconut flakes and only one has nuts on the outside. They were heart-shaped...I'm guessing those ones are leftover from Valentine's Day :) Also, although I didn't get one, their cocktail menu looked incredibly tempting!!! We've been to Amar a few times now and each time has been an excellent experience. The food is always consistent and the service is very good. Amars decor is light and bright , you can see the kitchen from just about anywhere in the restaurant although the seating is a bit tight. Nice "date night" restaurant serving good food and drinks. We took an out of town friend for dinner and they thought it was very good.
