[Semi-disclosure: our wedding was in 2009, and this review is posted in 2011 because I was asked to…read moreadd it to Yelp. However, I received no compensation or discount for it, I don't expect to be doing business with them soon that would get me that discount, and I stand by it as true and genuine.] I was in charge of finding the photographer, and my wife was really angry about me wanting her to meet "just one more" -- until she actually met Dan DeLong and saw his work. We knew he was what we were looking for, and they were competitively priced compared to other shops out there (especially once you factored in the skill). Dan photographed our entire day, from getting ready at the hotel, to a wedding on the water in September sunshine, to wandering through the galleries of a local museum. We just did our album (finally!) in 2011, and every time we look at these photos, it almost makes us cry. He perfectly captured the excitement, the romance, the playfulness of our friends' children and the settings, and all the emotion we wish we could bottle from the most perfect day of our lives together. I loved the PI and miss it, but the one good thing about its demise is that it created RedBox. These guys have spent years practicing their craft and learning to capture fleeting moments that tell a story, and we would recommend them to anyone.

Dan DeLong and the other photographers at Red Box Pictures are simply terrific. We hired Dan to…read moreshoot our wedding in the Methow Valley and were thrilled with the way the photographs turned out. We really wanted a photojournalist to capture the candid moments of our day, and we got exactly what we were looking for. (Dan is a former photographer with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. So are the other three who work at Red Box Pictures). I can't tell you how much fun it was to get the pictures back and see all the little things we missed during that blur-of-the-day. Dan came to the resort to photograph me and my girls as we got ready, and somehow managed to get back to the wedding site to get my husband getting ready as well. He didn't miss any detail throughout the day and night. He was also very personable, easy to work with and spent a good deal of time consulting with us about what we wanted. He even helped us sort out the timing of events so we'd get the best light and best photographs in the outdoors (we got married with the North Cascades in the background).

Well it may not be the Wall Street Journal, the Yakima Herald republic is one of those papers that…read moreyou grow to appreciate the longer that you our way and the longer that you have access to it. It seems like a sort of contradiction in terms, however we came back after being away for about 15 years and all the while we found the Herald online to be an incredible source for Yakima and Central Washington based news. Since physically being back in Yakima, I've also grown to appreciate the type of reporting that these guys do. While it's easy to write them off as just a small town newsletter, the type of reporting they do here is really top-notch. The news team doesn't rely on other sources, but rather really goes out of their way to make sure they are getting stories that affect the area and report on it in an unbiased fashion. I found it very interesting to learn that the Seattle Times actually owns the Yakima Herald, but lets them operate completely independently. Having that sort of freedom is key for an area that operates very differently then the west side of the state. The local sports coverage is excellent and they do a great job of focusing on many of the smaller towns in the area as well. Over the past few years they have brought on a number of new staff members who have brought a renewed focus to local cultural events, culinary opportunities and outdoor activities. This in addition to operating the only Spanish newspaper in the state and publishing a number of magazines throughout the year including ones that highlight different activities in the valley, activities for kids and families, and wedding magazines a couple times per year. Looking into all that they do here gave us all the more reason to make sure we continue to support this paper and continue to stay up on local events. If you want the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times, you should definitely get them to stay up on national and global events, but for making sure you know what's going on in your hometown in the valley, there's no better place to look than the Herald!

There are several revenue options for local newspapers, but obituaries shouldn't be one of them…read more Obituaries actually drive traffic to a website (last time I checked). Dad's obituary was going to be $200+ to publish in the Herald. No, it wasn't lengthy. Check out the pricing. It's obscene. We let the funeral home publish digitally and shared on Facebook. Then we sent it to dad's local paper where he grew up. They did a wonderful job, lovely color photo, and no charge.
