Sidekick Dog Training - Puppy class fun!

When I first adopted Sophie, my white shepherd, she hadn't been socialized. Although she was…read moretreated well by her rescue foster, she was never exposed to the outside world. As a result, she exhibited the beginnings of fear aggression, which I understand is common in German Shepherds. My vet recommended immediate puppy school and I chose Amanda because of her reputation for being upbeat and training in a positive manner. Whelp (snicker), turns out I picked the right trainer. Amanda knew how to help Sophie develop confidence and she also watched her carefully for signs of fatigue and stress during class. Sophie thrived under Amanda's training. I swear Sophie would say (in doggie language), "Pick me! Pick me!" whenever Amanda needed a volunteer pup to show the class a new trick. She LOVED puppy school. She LOVES Amanda. Amanda uses clicker training and other methods of positive reinforcement so you can toss out that awful pinch collar and teach with gentleness and humor. No more feeling guilty about using those harsh training methods that were the norm for so many years. And you'll have fun. And your pup will have fun. And you'll enjoy a whole new relationship with your best friend. I can't recommend Amanda highly enough. She's great.

The location was great- less than five minutes off the highway and beautifully located. The building we were training in wasn't heated so that was a bummer on colder days. The space was large enough to accommodate the number of dogs in class. She offered classes that grew with your puppy which was also nice. The classes were moderately priced and affordable for what is available in the area.

Laughing Dogs - Trails Class

Holy Macaroni, Laughing Dogs changed my sweet girl's life! We went to the little dog class and I…read morewas AMAZED at how quickly my pup transformed into a better socialized, better behaved girl! I had adopted her from a rescue organization that didn't tell me the whole story about her past which caused her to be leash aggressive and nervous around other dogs. With just 6 weeks of this course, she had come so far, amd Cayce had set us up with a whole host of tips and tricks to work on with her so she could continue to progress after class was over. I only took off one star because one week Cayce wasn't the instructor and it was unfortunately our last class so I wasn't able to chat with her about what our next steps would be. The other trainer was good too, I just wish that I had known she wouldn't be there so that I could have had a last conversation with her!

I sought help from the rescue society and they were able to give me some tips, but nothing really to help the main problem. They recommended that I find a trainer that could help with the aggression, which is how I found out about Cayce. I explained the problem to Cayce and we agreed to start off with a private lesson. The private lesson was enlightening. She gave me some information on the breed that I had not heard and that gave me some insight on some subtle behaviors. Cayce also emphasized how I should interact with the dog and that definitely made a huge impact in how we have bonded. We worked on some leash behavior and of course, my dog in a new situation and without any other dogs around, was the perfect angel. We agreed to just kind of boot camp her and get her into the next group class so we could work on her behavior around other dogs. A few days later, we walked up to the group class where there was a good 12-15 other people with their dogs. My dog again was totally chill and I was feeling kind of optimistic. We walked past other dogs and she didn't react at all. So far so good. We started out with basic commands which my dog has limited proficiency. She does sit when she is sufficiently bribed, but not much beyond that. The class was working on stay and I'm just kind of going along with it and thinking when is she going to lose it and lunge after another dog, so I'm saying, "stay, staaaay, stay" and watching her like a hawk. I'm sure I was pretty funny to watch. Cayce's assistant then comes up to me and says, "Okay, let's try that again, but not so creepy, kay?" Everybody in my little group is looking at me like, "what did you do?" Hey, this is my first class too. I don't know what I'm doing, so give me a break okay. He then tells me I need only say stay once and if she doesn't, then correct. I'm like okay, that's all you needed to say. So, we move on and about 45 minutes into the class, my girl has just about had it. Out of the blue, she decides she doesn't like the lab mix sitting a few yards away. She lets out a huge bark and does a little lunge at the pup. Super. I figure this isn't good, but it kind of is because Cayce can see her bad behavior first hand. Cayce doesn't really say anything and continues on and I figure this is something we can discuss later. So about fifteen minutes later, we happen to be next to Cayce as she is explaining dog behavior and her dog is performing trick after trick to everyone's amazement. Well, not quite everyone. At some point, my dog just had enough and jumped straight up and let out this menacing bark and lunged at Cayce's dog. I pulled her back and tried to contain her while also shrinking in utter embarrassment. Cayce didn't acknowledgement the outburst and continued her talk. At the end, she asked if there were any questions and after waiting my turn, I said, "Um yeah, how do I get her to stop doing that?" Cayce looks at me and says, "tell her don't do that." She then turns back to the class and says farewell and walks away. Don't do that? Wow, why didn't I think of that? (I did...quite a bit. Maybe I was doing it creepily or something). Never went back. Look, she educated me on my dog and there were some definite benefits to that. Cayce's dog is obviously very well trained and does some amazing tricks. That would be pretty cool if my dog could do that someday, but for right now I want to take my dog with me and not ever worry that she is going to attack some other dog. I've found another trainer and will start in again. There were some benefits from our time with Cayce and I'm sure other people in different situations will find benefit as well.

She lacked basics…read morein etiquette, and just generally treating another human well, and she seemed very standoffish, and when it comes to me, and my puppy, she is condescending, and patronizing. She seemed really taken with my dog's abilities, at such a young age, and almost had an air of jealousy towards her. I would never work with such a know-it-all and if I see her at the park, again, I will pick my puppy up and leave. She tried to pick up my puppy, without asking, and my puppy wiggled out of her arms...well, Poppy, I can pick her up just fine. Please don't come near me, or MY dog. Thanks!

10/5 stars for Sarah! I have never wanted to give more stars than I have for Cascade Canine…read more Prepare yourself for some hyperbolic but entirely accurate praise...her service has changed our life! We always loved our little Mini Schnauzer but she was a difficult pooch. We are to blame of course but we couldn't fix the behaviors. She was aggressive toward dogs and strangers and had zero ideas how to listen to commands. We loved her but few others did. :( Sarah met us and got know us and our dog and within the hour she had complete understanding of what caused our bad behaviors. She helped us to understand how a dog thinks and how it impacts their behavior in situations. We then handed over our sweet dog for two weeks to Sarah (she needed extra extra) and when we got her back it was a literal and figurative and actual miracle. She was this obedient, calm, and in control dog. We met her at a park and she was around humans and dogs and didn't lose her shit even once. She came, sat, stayed on command. And better yet Sarah showed us how to do magic too. We have had our dog back for a few weeks since the spa treatment and she is getting better and better each day. No backsliding at all. Next step is to start taking her to the office with me. It was worth every nickel. It has completely impacted our lives in a positive way. So thank you Sarah. You ROCK! If you have come to this page it is because you are like we were with a dog you love that needs help (you are the one who needs the help btw). You are stressed out and have zero clues how to fix it. We would like to welcome you to present day us with a dog that is an absolute joy who is always in control and a happy obedient companion. Imagine that for a minute. Yep it's real for us now thanks to Sarah. I don't care that this review is TLDR. I can't give 10 stars so I gave words.

Bainbridge Island Dog Club - The cutest little greeting cards in addition to all the treats, supplies, clothing for pets and their hoomans.

**Will be moving the shop location in the future**…read more Bainbridge Island Dog Club is at least one of three dog shops that I discovered yesterday along Winslow Ave. while shopping and strolling. They offer grooming at another location. This location is a separate building tucked behind Magnolia and La Mercerie. But, as I was told the shop will be moving, this may change soon. At this location, they have a great selection of dog treats, clothing, leashes, harnesses, poop bags, toys and treats. They also sell owner items: cute hats with their logos, hoodies to match your dog, etc. They even have hilarious greeting cards, even for your petsitter. On the dog and people hoodies: apparently they come in many colors throughout the year and are of very good quality. Several customers have reported back to the shop that they don't pill after being in a washing machine. I had a lovely discussion with the store attendant (I got the vibe she wasn't the owner), and she was so friendly that I came back later in the day to purchase some items. (Despite posted operating hours, I came back after hours at 4:14pm on a Sunday to make this purchase. She joyfully said she tries to keep the shop open for Seattle-based or tourist clientele who are used to longer and later hours. I advise calling if you want to see if they're open past hours.)
