Fun family-oriented magic show! Took my nearly-6-year-old to this and she had a total blast. That's how I'm evaluating it - the goal was for her to have fun and Scott & Mark really knocked it out of the park. There is tons of audience participation and some fun prizes. They did magic with both kids and adults. As someone else wrote, don't expect Vegas production quality, but it's definitely professional. And considering what you pay, it's a steal. And I appreciate their dollar popcorn and drinks - you really get the sense that they're doing this mostly out of love for the art. Scott's strength was his ventriloquism and comedy routines. Mark did some of the "big" prop magic - levitation, swords through a box with his assistant inside, etc. - and also some mentalism/card tricks. It's comparable to what you see on TV magic shows, but much more casual and closer. It's a local magic show and every child I saw in the audience was smiling. The show says 2pm but actually started at 2:10, however you want to be there early so you can sit closer to the front, which gives you more of a chance of volunteering. There's an intermission halfway through which is long enough to walk down to the mall restrooms.

Fun shop with lots of classic magic nostalgia. Also has a theatre for live magic shows! The owner was really nice. Will be back again!

Extremely odd salesman. Just wanted to argue. Having said that, He was very passionate regarding the art of magic.

The drink prices are a bit steep - $18 for a CAN of cheap wine. The performance tonight was so not worth the ticket price. We are jazz fans and this show was a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. The sax player and pianist were really great... but how do you have a tribute show to Armstrong without a horn?? The two singers, well I'll try to be kind. They just don't get the songs they are singing. Sinatra was a crooner.the gentleman trying to portray his music had no depth, or concept of this style. It was a low tide performance that should have been a hurricane of energy! The lady singing the jazz songs was a tier two performer. Not horrible, but Luke warm. It was a disappointing evening. I was a grateful it was only one hour long.

In typical Portland fashion, the Abbey is in an older neighborhood mixed in between homes and businesses. The building itself seems to have been recently renovated and looks wonderful! Everything is clean and seems newer, and the staff were friendly. We were given first timer information upon entry, although we probably could have figured things out on our own considering its size. There is a bar adjacent to the main area which made for easy access to pizza and drinks. They do have a limited menu but I appreciated the tasty Old Fashion I got, and my son enjoyed the pizza & candy. The acoustics were booming. It was loud downstairs! I overheard another patron saying people could go upstairs if the volume was too much where we were (I did not go upstairs). There is a little area for dancing and hanging out on both sides of the main seating area, as well as at the back of the room. I really liked it here! I hope I have other opportunities to return to the Abbey :)

If you want to rent a less than 100 seat theater as a presenter, or see some experimental performances as an audience participant, this is a good spot to explore. They are also home to workshops at the space and in the St Johns area. As others have mentioned, the theater fronts a broad gravel yard entering behind the building address. You can drive, bike or walk easily around the front of the building on NE Farragutt to the right facing it, traveling behind to the East to the area below by train tracks. You might bring a flashlight to avoid puddles when it is raining between car-bike and theater. I have seen quite a few very unique performances here. The comradery, community and discussions are unbeatable. If you are a cultural explorer in the area, suggest to bookmark the site for upcoming events and then sample them as you desire. They are Portland central for performances and workshops in the modern dance butoh dance form. I guess that's why it's called the Headwaters! But it really only took 10 minutes to get there from the Rose Quarter. We were warned that the theater was a little tricky to find, especially in the dark. This was good advice, as the theater is located in the bottom of a building, which you can only approach from around the corner near some sketchy looking railroad tracks. Once inside, the place is actually quite nice, with comfortable seats and good sound and lighting. They seem to present a lot of experimental theater and dance; check their website for current listings!
