Alkan Air was the charter that our Earthwatch crew took to and from MP 222 in the Northwest Territories of Canada on our recent "Climate Change at Arctic's Edge" trip with Dr. Pete Kershaw of the University of Alberta.
On the way out, we flew with Pilot Rick Nielson on a deHavilland DHC-3T Otter. The flight over featured stunning views of the mountains and some impressive overflights of an alpine lake and a few mining camps. I was impressed how smooth and safe the flight was and how quickly Rick got the plane in the air in Whitehorse and down again on the gravel landing strip at MP 222.
On the way back, Pilot Jeff took us through the MacKenzie Pass, over Ross River and through the mountains, often in some rain. That flight was also smooth and safe and this time I got to sit in the cockpit and watch and listen to it all from this very interesting perspective.
Alkan Air also has a nice comfortable passeger lounge and a handy shuttle service to get you to and from Whitehorse just before or after your flight. read more
