I went to AU for 3yrs, one of the years I studied abroad as an exchange student for a semester and I didn't even get to go to one of my top choice schools. Instead I settled for a European university close the European city that I want to study in. Luckily I worked hard, wrote essays to get an international Gilman scholarship to fund my studies abroad. I was so disappointed after arriving at the placement European university bc it was somewhat close to Alfred NY suburbs but in a large European city. Studying in Alfred did not prep me to thrive studying in Europe, the courses were very difficult, professors spoke English was quick with accents. Even study abroad prep courses prior to my abroad semester wasn't all that helpful. I ended up not completing my semester abroad due to other reasons. AU international director only showed sympathy towards my not-so-good abroad experiences, that's about it. I expected more from AU after paying over $40k tuition per semester On a bright side, I met my bestest friends for life at AU. AU have an excellent organizations and programs for student engagement and community. International organization ISSO which I was on the eboard for a year was the best org that I've joined and connected with friends all over the world. Now in my late 20s, as I travel I'm able to reconnect with international friends that I met in Alfred briefly. My global connections are wide. If you're looking for a liberal arts school and somewhere in the rural where you're not distracted, this is your school. If you're looking to study fine arts, glass engineering, this university is top notch for these majors. If you're looking to get into business schools, go somewhere else bc I transferred to a SUNY close to home. AU's drop rates significantly high after the first semester and first year, a majority of my class (2016) transferred to other public schools. Yet I'm still paying over $30k in loans and I didn't even graduate from this school. My classmates who graduated undergrad had hard times finding a job after undergrad. Most of them went to grad schools in order to find higher paying jobs. read more

Their financial aid office is horrible and disorganized. I filed multiple complaints showing that I submitted what was actually requested of me and they basically told me that there was nothing they could do and I needed to figure it out. Then then added over $300 in additional late fees. I am a returning student as well. Complete disregard for their CITE students. read more

Graduated 2015. Went because of their acclaimed 98% job placement. After having trouble finding decent work in my field and at risk of my loans defaulting I called their career development center for help with finding a job, head of the CDC Amanda Baker told me to go work at McDonalds flipping burgers to repay my loans, I wish I was joking. I hold my BS in Accounting and I have a good job working at a law firm now (but still not working in my field) but I must warn people that the institution is a sham and offers no after college assistance as they advertise. Alfred University has given me zero assistance and after such an extreme disrespectful, unprofessional, and demoralizing experience I wouldn't want it. Stay away. read more

Alfred University is a small, beautifully maintained school with a welcoming and friendly community atmosphere. It is a place where professors get to know their students (because class sizes are small), where the academic focus is on the success of undergraduates and students are expected to succeed. There is plenty of help available for students who need it: help sessions, tutoring, a writing center and academic counseling. The campus has a good safety record, my son says the food is good, and there are plenty of recreational clubs and activities offered. Plus, the surrounding area is great for outdoor enthusiasts like him. AU is located in a quiet, rural are with a very small town. This is perfect for some folks, but would be not be a good fit at all for others. So, visit! read more

A good last choice college. If you aren't into ceramic engineering or a ceramic art then find another place to go.

Contrary to what has formerly stated, the programs that Alfred University is designed to excel in (particularly Art and Design, Engineering, Athletic Training) are incredible effective in networking and providing a multitude of post-graduate paths for students. Simply because an individual made a poor choice in majoring in a department designed to be minored in does not speak to the university as a whole. Should someone put any sort of effort towards branching out with what the university has to offer, he/she would have their path paved. read more
