I love Aldi because they are super affordable. In addition to that, sometimes they have really good deals such as the one that I smacked on my recent trip where I got these plants for $2.50 apiece. The thing I like about Aldi over other stores is that they have self check out and you can usually get in and out pretty quickly in comparison to Walmart or even sprouts up the street. The parking lot is simple as though it's easy to get in and out unless the vintage Marché is going on. We have really come to appreciate ALDI. Mostly for the prices, but we also like the quality of the things we buy. If I were to pick a favorite, it would be the German sausages. Yum! Though I do wish they had better a better bun selection for those sausages. While beer selection is minimal, sometimes there is something interesting. On this trip we brought my Mother. She warned us that she is not a fan, but after we showed her the ins and outs, she warmed to ALDI. And what trip would be complete without a walk down the "isle of shame?" I don't think I've ever bough anything from this "non-edibles isle", but it's always fun to look. Bottom line: Don't forget your quarter and your shopping bags. read more

I had heard about ALDI, I had researched ALDI, but was I ready for ALDI? I waited for a break in the weather and started my five mile bicycle journey, only to ride into a very windy downpour, and was immediately soaked through, but I rode on. Then the rain stopped for good, and, besides the wind trying alternately to steal my bucket hat or push the soggy brim into my face, the rest of the ride was quite pleasant. I got to ALDI (I keep wanting to write or say ALDI's) and wrung out my hat. The rest of me seemed to have dried out to the point where I wouldn't drip on the floor. I still looked like a drowned woodchuck. A nice man offered me his cart. I had heard they were available for a refundable quarter, but I guess sometimes they are free. I put my bags in the cart and went in. My first impression: freezing cold! Of course I was sopping wet, so... also, brightly lit, and not claustrophobic, and the produce department smelled good, important! And then I encountered something I feel must be very ALDI. No loose produce. You do not buy one or two onions or peppers, you buy a bag full. Not a huge family value size bag, but enough for a few days or a week, or... until the rest rots in the rotter drawer. The garlic came in little net bags, and the individual cloves looked to be pretty small, and I don't have much patience with that, so I passed on those. But you can buy just one avocado. They were huge! The produce looks to be fresh, but when I went for red seedless grapes they came in a big plastic tub, and that is a bit of a turn-off for me. The baby carrots are very cheap and tasty. Pineapple spears, tasty and not fibrous. Mango slices, just ripe enough. As for greens, there were plenty of bags of spinach, and chopped kale, but I saw no collards or field greens. I couldn't find the bananas, but that is because they were all green and I didn't recognize them! As I shivered my way around the store I definitely noticed the lack of choices in some areas. One kind of cottage cheese, and so on. Also, regarding low fat, low sodium, or unsalted items, you probably won't find them. I wanted to do an informal price comparison with Walmart, and I think ALDI has better deals on a lot of store brand stuff. Milk. Dried fruit. Seltzer. I tried the PurAqua berry seltzer water, and the label says it is naturally flavored with other natural flavors, which I think is redundant, but the taste is pleasant. I tried the California Heritage Cabernet Sauvignon, very cheap, and found it to be drinkable, if not complex. The Signature Select sourdough bread was decent. Self checkout is king here, but if you just start unloading your goods on the conveyor at the unstaffed conventional check stand an employee will appear just in time, I promise! I forgot that ALDI does not provide plastic bags, and I had planned to sling a few of those over my handlebars, but there turned out to be room in my panniers for everything. There was a shortcoming in the egg department. There were only a few cartons of eggs, and they were crumpled and sad. I think I might like ALDI. I will go back and check the meat department. I bet I won't find smoked pork hocks. The fresh and lightly smoked raw salmon looked good. I'll grill some stuff and get back to y'all. read more

Depends on the store and location! Small stores are not able to offer the variety as the larger stores. The Saint Pete stores are moderately small with a small meat department and a small cheese selection whereas the Aldi's on Seminole Boulevard just north of Park Boulevard is one of the most fabulous shopping experience is you can have a Normas selection of meats, cheeses, milk, products, vegetables, breads it's just enormous, and the quality of the products are superior! **beware** the pictures that are up about this store are deceiving. It looks nothing like that. Unfortunately I've been twice and each time I have been harassed by a homeless man to buy him something while I'm going in and when I leave approached again to see if I bought said items. The store is really dirty and the food looks like it fell off the back of an expired food truck. Also there are no bags at all. So when I bought a few items and realized I forgot my bag, they pointed in a direction for me to grab a box. No big deal but it just added to the frustration. I will be going further up 34th to the newer aldie from now on. it's a very clean and nice store and they have paper bags for you. I hope they make some changes. I would love to see it flourish. It's a no from me. With my relatively limited experience at ALDI I will say this is the most sub mediocre grocery experience ever. My visit was during the holiday season and so I have to give them a break and assume that a lot of inventory is probably sold through because of the busy time of year and also a lot of inventory space is dedicated for seasonal ~stuff~. Even with giving them this bit of grace, I am still super unimpressed by the quality and quantity of this store. The store itself is just too small to have "everything" for a proper grocery trip. My husband bought fresh cut roses at Aldi in South St. Petersburg. The price was $10.00 and he was charged .96 tax. The receipt said 7% sales tax. That doesn't compute. I tried to find out if there is a luxery tax on flowers but only found that florists have to charge 7.5% tax. If this is the case, why isn't it reflected on the tax rate on the receipt? read more

Love this Aldi! If you're a grocery shopping snob, do yourself a favor and don't go so you don't ruin the experience for the rest of us (like the K*ren's who've reviewed this as less than 5 stars) Everything is off brand, so dang cheap, and delicious! For $80 I can get what would normally cost me $130 at a publix. It's never super busy, and a great alternative to wally world as you can get in and get out quickly and efficiently. Don't have bags? Buy some there or... wait for it... put it all in your car without bags and use any of the plastic bags full of plastic bags you have in your house! read more

VERY AFFORDABLE. All basic foods are priced lower than other grocery stores. Even some of the low priced wines are good for everyday consumption. This was awful. I felt icky after shopping here and didn't even want to eat the food I bought. I think I was hoping for something different and I have heard good things about Aldi both from friends and articles I've read online about their unique "do it yourself" tactics to keep costs down. I was at a consignment store shopping and noticed the Aldi next door so I thought, "now is as good a time as ever to try it out." The first thing I noticed was a nearly empty parking lot- not a good sign. Then, in order to get a cart, you must insert a quarter to unlock it. You get your quarter back upon returning the cart. I kind of liked this idea. It keeps things neat and orderly because people return their carts to get their quarter back instead of just leaving the cart in a parking space. I went inside and noticed it had a warehouse look. The lighting was low, the floors were concrete and the aisles were all short so you could see from one side of the store to the other. The food brands were all off-brand. I thought I was buying dollar store food.... I couldn't find brands I liked and they ran out of bananas??? The selection was sparse and I ended up having to go to another grocery store for the items I couldn't find at Aldi. The check-out process was interesting. There was one lane open and the cashier sits on a chair. All they do is scan and direct you to pay. They do not bag and they do not get out of the chair. So, once she scanned, she put the items in another cart she had on her side and then told me when she done to grab her another cart. What? It seemed really lazy to me. They had a bagging station after check-out where the customer bags their items without holding up the line. If you do not bring your own bags, you have to buy their bags. This is one of those stores you have to be prepared for. You cannot just stop here quickly on a whim. You have to have a quarter and you have to have your own bag- Just FYI. Overall, I felt like I was shopping in a Cold War era Russian grocery store and I felt like I had to do way too much for the little amount of savings I got from their off-brand food. read more

I love Aldi. It is not fancy, they do not spend a lot on advertising. You have to remember to bring a quarter to rent your cart (you get the quarter back if you return the cart.) You have to either bring your own grocery bags or buy theirs (.5c for paper, .10 for plastic, .79 for insulated cooler bag.) Everything in the store sits in the boxes they were shipped in. There are usually only about 3 employees working and sometimes you have to jump out of the way to avoid getting hit by the lady with the floor sweeper in between customers. So why do I love Aldi? THE PRICES. Everything at Aldi is a fraction of the cost for the same or better quality than anything name brand you'd buy at Publix or Winn Dixie. They are the perfect store to stock up on the staples: butter, milk, eggs, sugar, flour, spices, etc... Great, fresh produce if you go at the right time of day. They have a generous freezer section too. Gourmet cheeses. A little meat department (hit or miss, but I did find grain-fed ground beef here for 5.99/lb last week.) Apples to apples, about 90% of what I've tried there has been less expensive and exactly the same quality as other grocery stores. Except their queso. Spend the extra for name-brand queso at the bigger grocery stores, but do try their white tortilla rounds for less than $2 a bag. I did knock off 1-star because they are NOT one-stop shopping. I almost always have to supplement a trip to Aldi with a smaller trip to Publix or Target for the more specialty items or household products I need. Also (and I know this is done to save money) I do find it a huge pain to bag my own groceries. It's worth it for the lower prices but almost always do I overstuff one bag with too much heavy stuff. read more

This is my go-to spot for groceries for my family. I save time and money as Aldi is efficiently laid out and I've pretty much got their offerings and placement memorized. The prices are just right and the staff at this location is polite. No frills here, so don't come expecting fancy marketing and merchandising. I am a devoted Aldi fan and it all started for me at this location. From the camaraderie that comes with trading cart for coin with another shopper to the rock-bottom prices for produce and organic milk, I love Aldi. They never claim to make shopping a "pleasure" but I will gladly bag my own groceries for the thousands of dollars Aldi has saved over the years. Do yourself a favor and try it out. Great price! Quick in and out. You have to pay for carts cost 25 cents. You get it back when you return the carts. Which cut out some of the cost of the food so they don't have to hire someone to get carts around the parking lot. They have a pretty good selection yet they don't have everything you will need on your grocery list. They change up some of their products which allows you to try new products. So some of the things you can come in and get all the time and then other things will disappear. Just a warning. One last thing bring your own shopping bags. Aldi has become one of my favorite grocery stores in the area. You get organic quality for a great value. I like the organic milk, uncured bacon, organic snack varieties and fruits and veggies, organic olive oil. You leave with no buyers remorse of spending too much on food. I suggest always checking the produce you buy for any mold or mush, I'm assuming since the produce is organic and is not placed in coolers, the food can go ripe/bad easily. I bought a thermos. Crofton, their own supplier. It is defective, doesn't hold the heat, stainless steel exterior is "pitting", the screw top doesn't seal and the interior is deteriorating. The store wouldn't help, directed me to use the email address on the bottle or 800 number. The email address is invalid. When I called the 800 number the rep stated he couldn't do anything either that I would have to contact Crofton myself. He stated he had no information on CROFTON, their own personal supplier, I would have to research myself. I went on-line and nothing. Zero. This is a scam. They'll take your money then leave you high and dry. ALDI is a scam. ALDI sells junk and no support. JUNK. JUNK. JUNK, Please don't fall for the same scam I did. The prices are great, most of the merchandise is good (with some notable exceptions) but do they deliberately hire people who are rude? Most of the male employees are friendly but there are 2 women there who are short, curt and always look like they're mad at the world. Why do they do that? I know they have heard that their employees are not polite, and their web site always says that a local district manager will call me - but they never do.
