Any self respecting Dane would be familiar with the regular ritual of motoring down to Germany,…read morejust across the border, to do some shopping for candy, booze and smokes on the cheap. No such trip is complete without a stop at Fleggaard, however.
The primary reason? Fleggaard is easily the biggest and best of the 'discount store' bunch in the area, a literal stone's throw across the Danish border. Not only does this store generally have the widest and most well stocked selection of Danish, English and German candy known to man kind, they also have tons of booze and soda cases in just about every brand you could want (hello, ever elusive Pepsi Twist!). Quantities tend to be large, especially on candy. Think "economy sized" or basically what you'd get with an American Costco or Sam's Club approach. To take it one step further, sometimes you can even find monstrous sizes. Case in point, I was once able to find a massive 2000g box of Swedish chocolate here, if you can believe it. That's getting into the absurdly large, but it does exist and they do have it at Fleggaard.
Parking is one of the best of any of the big discount stores, with tons of room even for a store this size. What's better, within the parking lot and directly across from the store's main entrance, there's a detached cafe, recently expanded and now quite large, that serves everything from French hotdogs to curry wursts to bratwurst wrapped in bacon. You can even get burgers or sandwiches if that's to your liking, but most traditionalists will opt for a sausage of one kind or another.
At any time of year, but especially during the winter months, how are you not going to indulge in a cozy, well insulated, warm cafe and enjoy a couple of French hotdogs after a long drive across Denmark and down to Germany? There is simply no better way to get in the mood for shopping the big stores, and we almost always start by hitting Fleggaard's cafe and then shopping there, before moving on to a few others nearby.
Awesome place, really like the expanded cafe and always look forward to making the trip down when we're in Denmark. Highly recommended!
