I initially did a private lesson with someone, whose name I can't remember, at Coronado Golf Course many years ago and I had a bit of a bad experience. I left feeling more frustrated than I was when I first started because I was unable to hit the ball, even once, after following the techniques that I was taught. I was instructed to keep my arms as close to my body as possible and in doing that, I was unable to swing through because NEWSFLASH! I have rather large breasts blocking that pathway... HELLO!!!! I kept trying to tell the guy but I don't think he could relate, LOL, and surprisingly told me to stay the course with the "keeping my arms close" nonsense. After my first lesson lesson, I became convinced that I would never be able to golf because I have boobs and gave up the sport entirely, chalking it up to be something that was not for me. Fast forward to now, I decided to give it another go. I met with Shane and he broke everything down in a very simplistic way and what d'ya know!? I was able to hit the ball right away. What a difference having a great instructor makes! I would highly recommend hiring Shane for a private lesson. He turned something that was frustrating and seemed impossible to learn, into a sport that I look forward to learning more about. He is a great teacher! Can't wait to take more lessons from him soon and start kicking ass at golf!

When you walk into West Coast Dealing School (WCDS) one of the first things you'll notice is the…read moretables. They aren't cheap, wobbly, folding tournament tables. They're hardwood and carefully crafted, a solid base on which to learn. It wasn't until later that I found out that these handsome physical tables were in fact handmade by the owner and lead instructor, Chris Tidmarsh. That kind of quality is the perfect metaphor for the school: the loving attention to detail is present everywhere from the tables to the chips to play money to the instruction. Nothing is rushed and no corners are cut. If you choose to start your journey as a poker dealer at West Coast Dealing School, the foundation of your education will be solid. I started school here as an arrogant poker player, thinking that the transition to dealer would be no big deal. How wrong I was. There is just so much more to dealing than I knew. It's not something that can be learned in a weekend or a week. I count 22 different games that I learned how to deal at WCDS and that doesn't include the 4 betting structure variants that could apply to many of them. This brings me to another point in the school's favor: they aren't trying to rush you through. You can learn at your own pace on your own time. Some students go full time for a month. Some come in for 9 hours a week over six months. Some schools try to get you through the program and then it's over. WCDS is kind of like a gym with a lifetime membership. Every week dealers will come through who graduated years ago but just want to brush up on their skills or just enjoy the community and help the students out. There is one dealer, Katie, who came back a few weeks ago. Katie graduated a while ago and works professionally as a dealer, but her Poker Room scheduled her to deal a H.O.R.S.E. tournament and she felt rusty on her 7 card stud so she stopped by the school and we all dealt H.O.R.S.E. for a few hours. Katie got to use the facilities and her and all the students practiced up on our H.O.R.S.E. games. This sort of thing just isn't possible at a lot of schools. You graduate, but a year later you need to brush up? Tough. Not at WCDS. This continued availability of the facilities is indicative of the attitude and the vibe of the school. It's about education and community, not about money. Never once have I regretted or even thought about the tuition fee; you get so much education and support for your money that the value is beyond question. Whether you are being taught by Chris or Genti (Mr. G ), you'll be in excellent hands. G is an excellent teacher: patient, laid back, preaches staying calm and acting rationally in the box and has an attitude that encourages that. He's a gentle, calming influence and that's a good thing. He's also very generous with his time. If you miss something or need something explained, he is happy to do so, even if he had just presented a full lecture on it 20 minutes earlier and you missed it because you arrived late. I don't think I've ever seen him frustrated. Chris is a fountain of knowledge with an eye for detail. He literally built the tables and the whole educational experience from the ground up. He can be tough sometimes but sometimes you need someone to be tough. Auditioning for a poker room is a nerve racking experience and only by replicating that experience at the school can you truly prepare for it. Chris is also quite entertaining; he seems like he would be a fun guy to have a pint of Guinness with. If you're looking to deal the World Series of Poker and you graduate from West Coast Dealing School, Chris will setup an audition for you with the WSOP without you having to apply first. This is possible because the hiring managers at the WSOP respect the caliber of dealers that WCDS turns out. Learning to be a poker dealer can change your life. I found myself without any skills or a 4 year college degree and wanting a career change. What are my options? A job for $15 an hour? With 4-6 weeks of hard training, you could be a poker dealer and make $30-$45 an hour. That's a huge, very obtainable quality of life difference without too much investment. Plus the poker world is fun and the people are great. I can't recommend West Coast Dealing School enough.

That tells you how demanding--and at times frustrating--the program can be. The staff was generally supportive, and several instructors genuinely cared about the students. However, the school went through three different directors while our son was enrolled, and some instructors seemed burned out and uninterested. Our son had to stay nearly two extra years to get the preparation he needed to pass his FAA exams and become a certified aircraft mechanic. We are proud of his determination, but the program was far from smooth. There is opportunity here for students who are willing to persevere, but prospective students should understand that success may require a great deal of patience, persistence, and self-motivation.

Everyone else seems like they would rather be anywhere but there. They'll tell you they're "glad to help," but somehow always manage to choose the laziest, most inconvenient way of doing things. It's honestly impressive how much effort they put into doing the absolute bare minimum. I recently went in to pick up my gas card and was told one of the coaches wasn't there. Come to find out, I was lied to straight to my face because I literally saw him walking downstairs. Apparently, honesty and basic communication are too much to ask for. And don't even get me started on trying to contact the front office. You have to physically go in person just to get anything done. Good luck getting someone on the phone none of their numbers seem to work, and on the rare occasion they do, nobody answers. The entire front office could seriously use a lesson in customer service, communication, and simply giving a damn. LAZY. LAZY. LAZY.
