I spend a lot of time with my family in Trieste every year, and this year my wife was here for a…read morewhile (she is gluten intolerant, so I found Rossopomodoro by searching for nearby GF restaurants). What a terrific find for us! They have a separate, extensive menu for GF diners, and when they serve GF diners, the waiters wear gloves and they are totally attentive to showing their customers they practice proper handling. And the food is excellent. I am NOT GF, and as the cook in our home, I generally hate GF food, but their food is expertly prepared--the best GF food I have ever tasted, because of course I had to try what my wife had ordered). On two occasions, she ordered pizzas (an outstanding GF crust), and one time she ordered the tortelli with prosciutto, which was the best GF pasta we have ever tried. Their non-GF food is outstanding. The pizzas are light and have a perfect crust, their seafood is absolutely what you'd expect to get in Trieste. Before my wife returned to the States, my entire Trieste family went to Rossopomodoro for dinner to see her off--so when I say that they also thought the pizza was outstanding, it is quite a mark of approval. The staff and manager were absolutely lovely--we were all treated to Prosecco and limoncello afterward (he even GAVE me a small bottle to take home with me). It was raining, so we dined indoors, which is rare for us, and the tables and decor were lovely, well-arranged, with spacious accommodations. We loved it, and I will definitely go back there, especially when I have visitors here who require a well-organized GF menu (with GF desserts and even GF beer). 11 out of 10 for me.

Because of the Yelp system, I can't give Rossopomodoro the rating I would like which is 3.5. It is…read moreone of the few "chains" of Italian pizzerie in Italy/Europe. It is quite good and offers a full menu beyond pizza AND gluten free pizze and paste as well. You are greeted with a complementary glass of Prosecco to boot The staff in Trieste is very attentive and nice. Am looking forward to making this a regular spot

We sit down and notice that some wine glasses and some water glasses are missing. We ask about 3 times to bring some. In our table of 8 people we had 1 vegetarian. I know this is a fish restaurant so our vegetarian friend said sorry to the waiter and asked if they could make a vegetarian dish for her. The waiter said that they can make anything: "vegan, vegetarian, gluten free no problem!" So we look at the menu and all they have is Pasta with tomato and a caprese salad. I can eat those at home. We notice that there are some side dishes within the fish plates that are vegetarian: a parmigiana cake and guacamole. We ask him to make something with those and he said no problem we'll make a beautiful dish for you. We receive a complimentary entreé but it had fish. It was served also to the vegetarian friend. Great! They've already forgotten she's vegetarian. My friend hands it to one of us and isn't given anything vegetarian. The vegetarian dish arrives and it certainly looks beautiful but unfortunately it had no sign of any avocado or guacamole and it ended up being just grilled veggies with no dressing whatsoever. Very boring. They later ask if she's still hungry and she says yes. She would like a dish of cheese if possible. The dish was literally just a few cheeses, some feta, some mozzarella, and some parmesan. The only condiment was some honey on the parmesan. Another friend of ours ordered an entreé of polyp carpaccio. I ask him if i can taste some and he tells me it's a bit weird... It feels like there's sand in it. I take a bite and i definetly feel that "crunch". It's not a normal crunch. It feels like sand or seashell. We tell the waiter and he says that MANY customers tell him that there's sand but it's just salt... because "polyps don't live in the sand!". Right... This was not salt... it was sand or seashell... i think i can tell the difference. We ask for it to be changed. My friend orders scallops in exchange and they are nice. Our main dishes arrive and on some of the roasted potatoes we find again.. some sand but less than before. Again... it's not salt. Anyway... Most of the food was good. Nothing spectacular. We're certainly not happy about the sand... To make things worse we're always served by a different waiter so none of them remembers who ordered what. Every plate we have to tell the waiter who ordered it so that he can place it in the right spot. This to me is quite ridiculous. The bill arrives and they charged us for the sandy polyp... great. We decide to just pay, leave as soon as possible and never come back. Concluding: the service was terrible, the cooks obviously can't cook a simple vegetarian dish and there was sand in a few of our plates. Don't go here... ever.
