Horrible experience, but I guess this is what's called "German hospitality"!?!? We went to the…read morerestaurant to celebrate my mother in law's birthday. I ordered a Lemongrass soup that was on the menu, deliberately and desperately looking for a dish without dairy. Menu indicated none of this btw (which is a pretty standard practice these days pretty much anywhere else due to high allergens) and getting attention from of our server to be able to ask was really at the bare minimum. I made an educated guess. Turns out, the exotic food that I ordered (which is made with coconut milk in any other place) is made with rich cream in this joint, so I asked the server NICELY if I could have my meal replaced as I was unable to consume dairy. What followed next, I've never experienced in my entire life at a restaurant. I was SCOLDED in a raised voice for not letting her know about my dairy-free needs. Not only that, but my mother in law had to pay for both meals, because the restaurant and the server couldn't do their jobs. If I had a severe enough allergy, I could have ended up in hospital, or worse, dead! This practice MUST change before anyone gets seriously sick or hurt but as far as the overcharge goes, I guess I can forget about getting a refund for an unconsumed meal... Your business wouldn't survive a day in Canada like this.

Three adults stayed here in April 2013 at the recommendation of travel blogger Rick Steves. We had…read moretwo rooms: room 5 (2nd floor) had a double bed with private bathroom and shower, and a shared balcony that had a partial view of the castle. It is on the back side of the hotel so very quiet. Be sure to use the German rouladens (like garage doors that cover the window) to block out sun and any noise. Room 6 (3rd floor) also has a double bed but with a private bath that has a bathtub/shower combo. It is on the front of the hotel overlooking the Main Street. With the rouladens down it is very quiet. Both rooms were very clean, comfortable beds, plenty of towels, hair dryer and a mini fridge. The hotel has a Michelin rated restaurant on site that we ate at one night. The menu is not in English and wait staff spoke little English so it was difficult to order. We were not overly impressed with our meals here, and the meat one of us had was very tough. We ate at nearby Kornhaus for dinner the 2nd night and were very happy. Breakfast however was good with breads and cruisants, jams, boiled eggs, cheese, meats, cereal, yogurt, etc. Parking is available onsite but VERY difficult to access...you have to back in through a windy courtyard with lots of blind spots. Ask the owner to park it for you. We had a fighter pilot driving us so were able to do it on our own, but he also had to make a few attempts at it. They also offer free Wifi but its only accessible on one device at a time, and only in your room. Would stay here again, but would eat dinner some place else. Be sure to pick up dessert from Cafe Decker and take back to your room to enjoy with the view of the castle.

Every day (except Sunday), Freiburg has a fabulous open-air market in the Münsterplatz ( the plaza…read morearound the big cathedral ) The biggest and nicest market day is Saturday! You'll see local goodies like honey, cheeses, breads & baked goods. There are also flowers, fruits, veggies & food stalls everywhere the eyes looks - colorful, fresh & one of Freiburg's "must-indulge" attractions for sure. We didn't know about this market & had just eaten a huge breakfast at our hotel, so there was no tasty treat indulgence however, we did go crazy at a particular stall selling local honey Blue Cornflower & Rapeseed Flower honeys were ours for the taking. Also tried an Oak Tree honey that was interesting as well & had we had the luggage space, I could have gone totally crazy as she had all kinds of honey products like soaps & candles in addition to outrageously scrumptious raw honey Farmers' stalls are piled high with fresh produce and the cheese stalls were too tempting w/ their local yet diverse selections. Food stalls see tourists & locals alike, lining up to buy meaty, grilled sausages or freshly baked rolls & sweet buns. My best advice to you is come early, come hungry, & bring lots of cash!

Excellent market selling local food produce & utensils at very reasonable prices. I would strongly…read morerecommend the various wurststands, other he fruit stands & also the local honey. There is also a stand for vegans here as well (though not been given that I am not vegan).
