Beautiful day 3/2018
Hana A.

I read countless review on YELP & Trip Advisor before my husband and I made our way to Akumal Beach. Bottom line is that you DO NOT have to PAY ANYONE ANYTHING! Except for parking -I believe we paid $20 for a spot in a lot with security that closed at 6. As you make your way to the beach tons of people will try to coerce you in multiple languages to pay for entering, tours, renting gear etc. My husband and I literally (politely) ignored them all, even when they tried to tell us in English that we can't access the beach because the government has stepped in to manage the area. We did notice police presence but no one stopped us from walking through the scuba shop onto the beach. I think that's the best way to get to the beach without being harassed. Even if you get stopped courtesy and politeness go a long way because at the end of the day they are trying to preserve the area and not harm the underwater and surrounding ecosystems. But it just comes off as just random people asking for money. Definitely read the signs so you know where you are most likely to come across some turtle friends, if you're not a good swimmer you can rent a life vest and even snorkeling gear. Bring a cooler fill it with snacks & drinks and relax on the beach all day. We left our belongings multiple times there were plenty of people around doing the same and never felt shaded out or worried. We also stopped by one of the small restaurants on the beach for a quick bite which served the BEST hibiscus tea (wish I remembered the name) but beware of the ice they add in the cups you never know if it's clean so I always ask for no ice - the drink was refrigerated anyways. If you come prepared you can really have fun exploring the water and seeing different fishies, bring some pesos if you decide to check out a café or restaurant on the beach. I would say come early if you want to secure a nice spot, you cannot rent chairs from anywhere so bring some big towels or your own beach chairs. It does get pretty crowded in some spots.

Amazing totally worth it. Try to get more people for a better deal or they will overcharge. You will also see the reef in the water.

The only reason to go is to swim with turtles other than that don't bother here, yes it is beautiful but they will soon be making this beach private, they charge you to go in and they don't start letting people in until 9am. Also there is a lot of seaweed and the only seaweed that gets cleaned is in the private side of the beach for the public it will be too uncomfortable to swim or sit near the beach.

Snorkeling with the turtles and stingrays!

This place is gorgeous! I honestly wouldn't have known about this place if a fellow tourist hadn't told me! I came all the way from Cancun on the ADO to playa del carmen, then took a collective bus (colectivos) just to get here. It was absolutely worth the 4 hour round trip!!!!! The atmosphere and vibes are completely different compared to playa del carmen and Cancun! It had an extremely local vibe and the beaches were beautiful in its own way! Cancuns zona hotelera beaches are beautiful too but Akumal is rather unique! We paid $20/person to the locals so we can snorkel with the turtles and stingray. Definitely do not buy with big companies or online! The locals have the best price in my opinion. They speak English and they're super nice! You even get a bin to put your personal belongings in! (Included with the $20, no additional charges) They also don't expect tip!!

We're both waving hello!

LOVE Akumal! It has been a couple months since I've been here but I literally day dream about this beach EVERY day! On my trip to Playa Del Carmen I went here 4 out of the 7 days I was in Playa. I took the collectivo from Playa and back, which cost about 35 pesos each way. This is the way to go. (Do not take a taxi!) Me and my girlfriend brought our own masks, so we just had to rent some fins and a lifejacket which is recommended to keep you upright and because you have to swim long distances! Pay the money for a locker at the dive shop, it's worth it. DO NOT PAY FOR A TOUR! Go out on your own and swim with the turtles. I even found turtles and rays and told the tour guide where they were after I was done swimming with them. Swim out to the left and you can swim in the coral reefs and see an abundant amount of life! Is it time to go back yet!?? Can't wait!

Not a bad place , they try to give good service and succeed most of the time, room service is bad it's cold every time we asked (5) times It's all inclusive, restaurants are pretty good They don't make tipping Clear yes or no Tips are included in the price for the stay I still tipped for great service , I feel it was worth it Fair priced You could stay for a week and not spend money They constantly clean the grounds I would go back

Akumal has a good little beach. Nice shape to it. The launching spot for boat fishing and rides up and down the coast of Riviera Maya. And it cannot be denied that Akumal is a very cool name. It sounds so exotic, like a place far away. Sounds like it's in the deep south of ..... Mexico. Which it is. Not too much here, and that's part of its appeal. It will probably be filled with development soon enough, so enjoy it now. There's the Akumal Beach Resort, an interesting (bamboo) beach restaurant and bar, and Akumal Dive Adventures. The Be Live Resort where we stayed is close by. From around here you can get to Tulum in nothing flat, and beat the crowds in the morning when they finally arrive on their tour buses from Cancun and ruin the ruins.

It honestly was not as big of a wow factor as I had hoped…read more... Our tour guide for the cave was subpar at best! He did a very bad job at sharing the ecological (and anthropological) history of the area He did a bad job answering questions... We were rushed through the cave ........ It is a beautiful cave though, especially the part where you walk over the water over the bridge ((but definitely should not be a top 10 National Geographic cave walk!!!..?!!! I have seen much cooler caves!...) The animal park is very fun. They take nice care of the animals and they actually have a great variety. My two-year-old had a great time with the animals. The cenote Was ***extremely busy !...... full of loud obnoxious tour groups who completely ruined the whole vibe There are catfish in the water that do not bite The cenote is small. The water is crystal clear! It is very fun to explore! Bring a mouth piece for the snorkel, as they do not provide those (the thing that enables you to breathe while you are under water) The water is FREEZING cold Even colder than they advertise There are no wet suits We went Thursday at 1 pm for the cave, and 3pm for the cenote, so I was not expecting it to be busy..... The cenote is 10 minutes away from the cave ( you have to drive there) Aktun Chen is about 20 minutes down a dirt road- once you exit the highway, there are signs saying you are heading the right way to the cave/cenote, but I kept doubting myself.. as the dirt road feels very remote Glad I went, but honestly would not go back again... PS- they say no sunscreen to protect the cenote, but allow bug repellent lololol -- do you know how much more toxic bug repellent is than sunscreen?? Hire better staff, and I will feel inclined to give a better review It felt like a cattle corral ..... did not feel genuinely cared for ((or that the staff genuinely cares for the environment!..!.!.!)

We signed up for the combo package which included ziplining, then a cave tour and then the cenote…read more The whole family unanimously agreed Aktun Chen was the highlight of our 1 week trip to Mexico. The ziplining was 10 ziplines, and the tour guides were fun and allow you to go upside down or 2 people at once on some of them. Make sure to bring money to tip the tour guides! The cave tour was the weakest section but I admit I did learn a bunch of interesting geological sorts of stuff. The cave actually gets a bit muggy and so the cenote was a great way to finish the day and cool off. They have you do a very brief "tour" in the cenote and then we were given about 30 min of free, unsupervised play time there. The water is clear, cool, clean and you adjust very quickly to the temperature. The lighting and colors were MAGICAL and the kids loved swimming amongst catfish. Water shoes were perfect for the whole day. You get a locker at each site. Towels and change of clothes are handy at the end of the day- don't forget those! And keep in mind that getting to the front entrance of Aktun Chen is not the same as getting to the actual reception area - it's ~ 3.5 km down a windy dirt road. Something to consider if you get motion sick easily, or something to consider if you rent a tiny car that might have difficulty on dirt roads.

That's what you get at Xcacel. I didn't detect any crazy rip tides or strong currents - and went about a mile off shore - far enough that to lose sight of landmarks to return to the beach (forget about remembering where clothing, sandals and water bottle!). I did not see any turtles here but I did see a lot of fish - it was fantastic. One of the best beach experiences I have had in my life - I will definitely go back. This is a DIY, advanced level snorkeling and swimming beach. There are tours showing up with the occasional busload of people to see the tiny cenote and to trek onto the beach but - the beach is so big - I really didn't see many other people. There are no services - just a kiosk on the driveway for your donation/entry fee. Bring your own EVERYTHING.

We snorkeled on our own and saw quite a few fish and a barracuda. We didn't see any turtles, but it's possible that we just weren't looking in the right place. There's also a small cenote in the back with a ton of fish. I liked that the price of admission was low enough that we didn't feel compelled to spend too much time in the cold cenote water. The location is kind of hard to spot from the road. There's just one small banner with a picture of a turtle on it on the side of the road, and by the time you see it, it's probably too late to turn in.

The facility was a great place to spend a family vacation. We went in June 2025. Would for sure…read morerecommend the complex with families - but has some opportunities for improvement. Improvement Options: - Sargassum sea weed is built up into mounds. Therefore beach is not accessible. Not a resort issue but need to be mentally prepared. - Restaurant dining is biggest disappointment. Caliber was great regarding taste, but access via reservations is horrible. They were all full weeks in advance - yet hotel employees directed to App. Food service delivery is slowwwwwww. They could improve accessibility but improving food delivery at table such that turning tables quicker. We spent 2 hours at one restaurant and was not complicated. Fortunately the dining in the buffet of Yucatán was always good and well optioned. - Traditional pool side hogging of lounge chairs was problematic. People rush to "reserve" a spot then leave for breakfast. The resort would benefit from doing spot checks and taking towels if not readily occupied. - Little was provided to us for orientation about resort and sister properties. Was sort of self-learned. Pluses: -Two room family suite was great. Had a kids room with pullout and single bed and other room with two fulls pushed together for adults. Ample space. - No room keys to take everywhere. Room keys was integrated in wristbands. - Grounds are very well maintained. - Room was modern and no issues or concerns. Had an issue with TV not working and they fixed quickly. - Very kind staff members everywhere. - Life guards were there to protect and not be your friends ... meaning they actually looked for kids safety. - Pool furniture (loungers) were in great shape and sturdy. - Drink options were not top-shelf but good enough and not plastic bottles. Glasses were small but sufficed. Kids care and teen camp were great!! Our kids were begging to go back every day.
