Always good see a positive review when it comes up, however, I'm seeing that the overall consensus is not very positive. For me, frustration has been building that began with Dr. Akman's refusal to run a basic test. I will never understand, because other doctors have run the same test. Akman's response was, I don't need the test because,"I know what it is." At other times he ignores abnormal test results. In my opinion this is negligence, and it so perfectly illustrates the personality and manner in which Akman runs his practice. Akman listens to no one and certainly not to his patients, and while we are admonished to participate in our own medical care, this is impossible to do under Akman's dictatorial style. Without an open and analytical mind, Dr. Akman is prone to making mistakes. I have put up with Dr. Akman's arrogance and rudeness for much too long. Reviews of Akman on this site serve to reinforce my own experience. Dr. Akman refuses open discussion and gives no evidence of caring for his patients. I have never experienced anyone in the medical field with the same degree of arrogance and lack of concern. I feel that he is at the burnout stage in his career--30 years with the same old variety of patients; he can no longer hide his impatience and irritability. After waiting over 2 months to be seen, (after GP sent referral MULTIPLE TIMES with no response, we finally walked referral into office.....) and progressively getting worse, (including recent ER visit days earlier where ER Dr said it was imperative she be seen IMMEDIATELY)... "Dr" Akman turns my daughter away (swollen lymphnodes with serious thyroid issues) because she had cough (symptom of inflammation of thyroid) and very slightly raised temp 98.8 that they called "a fever" ....yes, I know.... ridiculous...symptoms could be cancer but we won't know because he said she needed to reschedule. (By the way, temp check multiple times at home, NORMAL temp. and she never had any actual symptoms of Covid, intermittent tickle cough is NOT "Covid") Needless to say I called and let front know that if he is that paranoid of Covid he needs to quit practicing medicine. I heard from a nurse that he already closed his practice 4 months because of "Covid"....I said this is why more people have died from NON TREATMENT than from Covid. Dr. Akman is the perfect example of an egotistical doctor who doesn't listen to his patients, and barely even pays attention to the human being in front of him. He runs an assembly line practice in which he spends about 10 minutes with you if you are lucky, and 5 minutes of that time he spends staring at his laptop and ignoring the patient. When I asked him about taking a particular medication in place of the one he prescribed, he laughed at me and said I needed to stop researching on the internet. Then he said "are you accusing me of taking kickbacks from the Synthroid manufacturer?" I was shocked because I had not said that...all I did was say that I had read many good reports on the drug Armour and that a lot of people preferred it over Synthroid, then he proceeded to say I was accusing him of taking kickbacks. Well, I hadn't even thought of that until he said it. So now I absolutely believe he takes kickbacks. First of all, he told me Synthroid was the best and that was all he would prescribe, but then suddenly he switched and went to Levoxil, and started saying that was the best. He also treated my husband who had a severe hyperthyroidism.. Akman gave him radioactive iodine treatment, which didn't work, and he had to do it two more times.... now that I have learned more about radioactive iodine, we would NEVER have done it...and not only did he do it to my husband once, he did it 3 times, and my husband's health has deteriorated. Just found out there is finally another endocrinologist in town, and we will be seeing her. Couldn't get any worse than this guy... oh and his nurse, or assistant...whatever she is....wow, she is absolutely horrible too... probably a result of working for a jerk like Akman...who I overheard bragging to his staff about all the shoes his daughter charged on his credit card...as his staff rolled their eyes. The very worst Doctor I have seen in my life! From the moment he walked into the room he was arrogant and rude! He talked with a belittling tone, it was horrible. The entire time I was thinking wow this was a waste of time and money. He did not listen to anything I had to say. He said my primary care doc wasn't treating my illness incorrectly, and he said it snickering like it was funny! I would not take my Dog to see this man! To top off his ridiculous attitude he had a Orange Fake Spray Tan, and his shirt was unbuttoned a little to fair to be professional so his chest was sticking out. Ugh he is so gross! read more

You know when I first saw him I thought he was great. But I do not think it is him. I think it is his medical assistant NOT following through. I was seen last year and they have not even called me back for a follow up or anything they said they would. I have to keep calling just to get info. but they still have not contacted to get any of may past records. I am so frustrated. read more

I'm posting on here today because I overheard someone saying they were hesitant to see Dr. Akman because of some yelp reviews. I was really surprised to see some of these comments when I logged on here because I don't understand where these people are coming from. I get it, we all have our own opinions but this is my opinion of Dr. Akman. When I went to see him, I was in very bad shape. Almost no testosterone and very very high thyroid. I felt like crap, all the time. The comment I overheard was that Dr. Akman was 'slow to treat' and takes forever to get your medications up to levels where they work. Dr, Akman did very comprehensive tests on me to rule out and then define exactly what was going on in my body and this took a week or ten days. If he had simply started throwing drugs at me to cover up the symptoms, the source of the symptoms may have gone untreated. He did what any good doctor would do, he used 'diagnostic tests' to 'diagnose' me. If this takes a week or two or whatever time it does, be patient. He's getting the information he needs in order to treat you. And think about it. With medications, you MUST start with low doses and work your way up to the right level. I would rather do this than have some terrible thing happen because I'm on too much. As for being arrogant or rude, I have NEVER experienced this. He always walks in with a smile, shakes my hand, sits down and asks me how i'm doing. Every appointment in the last 3 years has been this way, so perhaps the people with complaints are a little oversensitive? I don't know, but I would not in a million years call him 'arrogant' or 'rude'. What I do know is I love his staff and I love this doctor, he has turned my life around and I am in his debt. If you have a problem when your endocrine system, you want Dr. Akman taking care of you, the guy knows what he's doing. Oh, and to the really judgmental jerks talking about his 'fake tan'? I noticed one day he came in with a nice tan and guess how he got it? He spent a weekend in the sun, if I remember right, over in the Nevada desert, watching baseball tryouts. So whether it's medicine he's on or spending a nice weekend in the sun, bringing up what you think is a 'fake tan' is kind of a douchebag thing to do. Thank God I found Dr Akman. Gotta say, I was concerned after reading the other 2 Yelp reviews. However, I was treated courteously and VERY professionally. My other doctor wanted to watch my thyroid growth. Dr Akman reviewed my scans and labs and had a long and caring discussion with me. He recommended surgery and referred me to an excellent surgeon. Lo and behold cancer was found, which was Dr Akman's worry. We again had a long discussion about future treatment, monitoring and prognosis. I happened to mention his "fake spray tan" as mentioned in the other review. He informed me he is on a prescription that causes the discoloration. Way to go Leanne M for criticizing someone for an illness. If it were not for Dr Akman, I am not sure I would still be around. He is caring and definitely VERY professional. He clearly knows his stuff. Remember that most people post reviews when they are unhappy. This type of good review for this GREAT doctor is less common because people don't do post when they are happy. Unfortunately this skews the ratings. Don't hesitate to ignore the bad reviews. Granted I wasn't in Redding but 1 1/2 years so I don't have extensive experience with this doctor. But in the 4-6 times I saw him each visit was worse than the one before because he didn't listen at all. In fact, among all the doctors I've seen in my lifetime I've never experienced one that treated me with such disrespect and indifference. Sometimes great doctors technically don't have great bedside manner. There was nothing about his technical skill that lead me to believe he was current on medical information, or that his skills were even competent. Sometimes you don't hit it off with everyone, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt except that I consistently met people in Redding when I lived there whose experiences were as painfully horrible as mine. read more

Had one visit & he was professional. However, his receptionist is a different story. She ignored me when I entered the office, went about her other duties while I waited to be acknowledged, several minutes. Also, after my visit I called the office several times & not once did she answer the phone. Very difficult to get thru to this office. I heard a similar complaint from a co-worker as well. read more
