I discovered this coffee shop in Dublin originally, but the Hayward location is more convenient. I love how the coffee shop is drive thru only. I am a lazy girl who doesn't want to get out of her car for a matcha. On the menu it does not say matcha latte, but when asked they do make it. I ordered a small matcha latte w/oat milk extra hot. I love getting extra hot since by the time I start to drink it, it is the right temperature. The lady asked me if it was hot enough which I appreciated. While taking my order she asked if I wanted an espresso shot added, I declined but appreciated being asked. If you pay using Apple Pay they charge a processing fee of 35 cents. I thought there was a law that prevents this? I'm unsure. Overall, their matcha & service is 10/10, def coming back again.

I have been going to AJ's for about 12 years. Today I ordered a large smoothie and asked if I could have a second cup because I have a 4 and 2 year old and they don't both need a small 16 oz smoothie each. I was told they don't do that here. I have always had a great experience with the young women that work here and today was my first bad one. It was the owner AJ that helped me. I over heard him talking to one of the girls inside about how he was an accounting major. I prefer to support small business owners but not when they manipulate you into buying two small smoothies so they can make more money. My kids didn't even drink their smoothies. Plus he charged me $1 per smoothie for whipped cream. They have officially lost my business, my husband came here regularly as well, he said he will never again. He told me I should have cancelled my order and left. I wasn't only ordering smoothies. I also ordered two large specialty coffees. My uncle frequented AJs as well, he said he will no longer go after I told him the story of today. I will be telling everyone I know this story. It's sad when a business owner vs his employee are the reason you won't support a place. In these hard times, a business owner should be going above and beyond, not being greedy. I would've even paid for the second cup, which he would've charged me $5 for probably based on his current up-charging and price gouging. By the way, two smoothies for my 4 and 2 year old cost me $14.50!!! I wish I had gone to McDonald's where the smoothies are made with more fruit base and my kids actually like them. They are willing to give me a second cup always. If you like giving away your money to a greedy owner then AJ's is your place! I would like to point out that I was not offered a second cup. I asked exactly for a large with two cups and he replied "we don't do that here. We have smaller sizers." Now if I had the option of being handed a second cup, why would he not offer this option? I think it is clear why. I paid $14.50 for two small smoothies and whipped cream was $1 upcharge, he never told me this. He just asked if I wanted whipped cream and I said yes. So each small smoothie was $7.25!

If you're looking for a quick coffee place to make your morning a little better, this is the place for you! I have always supported small businesses during these times but especially Aj's Coffee. And when I say "small" business, I mean..."small"! This place is a cute little drive thru shop in the parking lot of a 7/11. This alone has always caught my attention and made me curious about what kind of coffee they have to offer! I live pretty close to this area and will always pass by so when I finally decided to try it out, it has easily become one of my favorite little coffee spots! Their menu includes flavors like Red Velvet, Oreo, Matcha, their famous "Mad Ajs" and more! Today, I got the Iced Snowy Mocha Latte which is basically their take on a White Mocha and its really good. You can always adjust your coffee to your liking too as I asked for it with Oatmilk and added Caramel drizzle. I got a medium and this coffee takes me a while to drink (meaning it lasts me a long time) which I like so that I can happily drink it throughout the day! A medium is basically a large here compared to other places so keep that in mind!!! My cousin got the Iced Red Velvet Latte (also size medium) and our total came out to $13.75, not too bad imo for pretty big coffees. I really love this place because of how convenient it is, how quick they are, and how much variety they have on their menu. I want to try out so many things they have because their flavors are super eye catching. Their staff is always super sweet too. Definitely a must to stop by here if youre in the area!!!

Drive through coffee! It's perfect for those who like to get coffee from local places! They had fast and speedy service! Very popular place Ordered the snowy iced mocha and the Oreo frappe, both were really good!

Came here Monday for coffee run. Just one person ahead of us. We ordered the snowy mocha frappe and a hot mad AJ coffee. Staffs were very nice and gave recommendations since it was our first time. The snowy mocha frappe tasted rich and classy. The hot mad AJ had chocolate and caramel flavors but not too sweet and warmed me up. Would totally come back for more!

Iced Hazelnut Latte with Soy Milk
Ashna D.

I ordered an iced hazelnut latte with soy milk at this coffee kiosk today and loved it! It wasn't too sweet and was a pretty decent size for being a small. There was no one in the drive thru line and I got my drink in less than 2 minutes!

This what what I got when I ordered a cinnamon roll. THIS IS FROM 7-11. Ya'll ran out and overcharged me for this. "Cinnamon Roll" HA!

I had been to the church before, but I didn't remember the massive coffee hangout there! It's so spacious and offers plenty of seating. How long has this place been here? I wish it were closer to where I live in San Jose! I could easily imagine sitting in one of the comfortable nooks, studying or grading papers. It's also a fantastic spot to meet up or chat with a group of friends. It was definitely a nice place for a date! When we walked in, there were hardly any available seats, but the line at the counter wasn't long. We found a quiet corner to sit and enjoyed our breakfast. I ordered a hot latte with maple syrup in the name, though I can't recall the exact name. It paired nicely with my pastry. The almond croissant I ordered was delectable, with just the right amount of sweetness and flakiness. My partner enjoyed his cappuccino and savory bacon croissant. We walked up two steps to the restroom and were surprised to find more seats and tables. I wish I had noticed that area when I was looking for a place to sit. Oh well, it was comfortable where we were. The girls should have more playdates with their cousins so we can come here more often. Is it really called a "playdate" when the kids are 12 and 15, and their cousins are between 21 and 30?

The salted maple latte was just ok... sadly it looked better than it tasted. I wasn't a huge fan of their espresso as it left a very sour after taste, even with the sweet maple syrup it wasn't very pleasant. Good espresso should be balanced and coffee forward, and I didn't get that. Almond croissant was great, but I was a bit disappointed in their coffee. Ambience is great for studying or getting some work done.

They also had a pastrami one that I wanted to try but they were sold out. Everything was delicious and buttery, as a croissant should be. Nothing was too sweet nor too salty however, I would recommend pairing it with either a nice cup of coffee or tea. My favorite so far was the cheese and mushroom and the kuign-amann but honestly, you cant go wrong with anything. Price wise, they started around $6 each which, for the quality you are getting, I believe is fairly priced. The staff were all very lively and super friendly. Also, the smell of freshly made croissants is absolutely intoxicating. I will definitely return to try the other items as well as their coffee.

They use high quality matcha powder (Marukyu Koyamaen) for their drinks. This is one of the few things that drew me into their cafe. When Natalie opened up shop right here in Castro Valley, I was ecstatic--we were finally getting our own fancy macaron spot. For the first few months, it lived up to the hype. The macarons were amazing, and the drinks were some of the best around, easily rivaling the top-tier boba shops in town. Then, the commercialization process began. More machinery, quicker turnaround, and a noticeable shift in quality. Everything started tasting different--very homogenous. The flavors were half as strong as they used to be, if even. Like most shops in Castro Valley, they rely heavily on part-time high school students, meaning there's a new face behind the counter almost every single visit. With that much turnover, it's hard to maintain consistency, and it really started to show in the drinks. Eventually, the macarons suffered too. The intricate designs now look rushed and drawn-on rather than intentfully crafted, the flavors have become imperceptible, and the drinks are just flat-out bad. It feels as if the shop has lost its captain, leaving a training process where the blind are leading the blind. It's truly unfortunate given how great they used to be.

Parking was busy (the lot is shared with Trader Joe's) but we managed to find a spot and head into the busy but not packed cafe. There is a large assortment of empanadas, from meat options like chorizo and chicken, to vegetarian like corn and onion, to sweet options too like apples. The menu also boasts lots of great drinks including mate tea! Lucky us, the empanadas we ordered weren't in stock so we had to wait ~10 for freshly baked ones. They came out buttery and piping hot, even with little hand-stamped letters on them so you know what you're eating, and it was so delicious. Most are about $5.50 each. Add oregano chimichurri for a bit extra if you want or pair with a tea, but these empanadas really hit the snacky spot. Lots of wooden tables with fresh flowers make Pampas a great space to chat with friends or to sit and do some work. The most standout feature was the friendly and efficient staff who seem to build connections with everybody who walks in the door. Worth a drive to Castro Valley!
