After the Fire is a outdoor art installation located in the City of Palo Alto, California. Located on the grounds of Mitchell Park, this abstract sculpture is the work of artist Bruce Johnson.
Johnson, a Northern California native, began working with reclaimed wood more than 50 years ago. He studied art at UC Davis in the 60's and also parallel to his art he worked as a craftsman/builder. His installations tend to be quite large and all of his art features some element of repourposing or reclaiming. The vast majority of his work revolves around Redwood and copper. From the artist:
" I am an artist fully engaged in abstract contemporary sculpture. I am a maker of objects with a craftsman's touch. I am a tool in the process. I am moved by mass and scale. I love the energy and vitality of these big chunks of salvaged redwood and work to honor their spirit. These sculptures are the echo of a vanishing ecosystem. May they also be seen as small acts of preservation.?"
Sadly many of his sculptures were lost int he 2017 Sonoma Fires.
After The Fire is sort of an unassuming piece. From a distance it just seems to be another large piece of driftwood. But once up close the shapes and curves seem to draw you in. As with much of his art, this one also features a small amount of copper. One area has a dragon scale effect and the other is a bit more conventional. The weathered copper sort of blends in with the wood and its incorporated so as to enhance the harmony of the grain. Speaking of which the grain of the wood when viewed up close has the effect of a 3-D USGS Topo map. You can almost imagine the peaks and valleys with the lines. Each angle is quite unique.
As noted this sculpture is within the Mitchell Park Complex. As such it can be a destination or simply a stop. There are 6 other sculptures within the complex for viewing as well. There is also the Mitchell Park Library, picnic/grill areas, bathrooms, tennis courts, The Magic Bridge Playground, etc. read more
