Many foreigners (i.e. US folks) don't understand the bin system at security and not realize you walk up to any open station available, even if it means being ahead of the last station. The staff is ok, just doing their job. Inside, a center board shows flights and gates. There are sufficient, though limited, shops and eateries inside. For our flight, they checked ID at the game in addition to scanning boarding pass. ID was not checked anywhere else.

Security went by pretty quickly for me. There is a McDonalds before security. After security, there is duty free and souvenir stores and some cafes. The airport needs more bathrooms and seats. There is a train stop, but I didn't use it. I took the bus to Catania Central instead and walked to my B&B. This airport is near Mt. Etna. It will close if she is too active due to ash in the air. Luckily, I flew out the day before she went active again. Check for her updates or fly in/out of Palermo instead.

I flew out of here to Rota, Spain. Since we were flying Space-A we had a show time of 4 p.m. and we were told the day before that there was plenty of room to get on. The flight didn't leave until 7 p.m. so yes it's a lot of waiting. We showed up at around 4:30. No lines upon check-in. We checked our luggage and were given a boarding pass. The staff here is fabulous, courteous, helpful and very professional. They're Italian so they love kids. Children are treated so well here. I will miss that so much. As soon as we were stateside, I noticed airport staff and one Southwest idiot flight attendant who was so rude to my kids-I don't understand the culture here in the U.S.-of thinking kids are such a nuisance. I know all my mommy and daddy Yelp friends can concur that none of us want our children to be treated like second class citizens. Oh, well, another reason to want to go back to Italy! A pizzeria and coffee shop are here to eat while you wait.
