Be prepared to walk, walk, and walk some more…read more Walk off the plane. Walk more to passport control. Walk a long line to get your passport stamped and be asked the questions as you walk through customs and into Switzerland, only to walk more to the baggage claim to where you stand a good while to greet your luggage many minutes after your plane has landed and you stress as you think the same thing I always think about, did my luggage actually make it on the plane? Then you breathe a sigh of relief as you walk again to the train station which is a solid walk from the baggage claim as you then take a train into town, or in my case, a train to Lausanne, and then walk again to the train and maybe have to stand on the train because you waited until the ultimate last minute to buy a ticket. At which point you almost wish you had someplace to sit down. Not the best way to greet people into a gorgeous country, but at least things do improve from there (and believe me, they do).

The layout is straightforward, so it is genuinely easy to find your way from check‑in to security to the gates without getting lost. Being so close to the city is a huge plus: you can be in central Geneva in a short ride, which makes early-morning flights and late-night arrivals much less of a hassle. Overall, it is an airport that combines convenience with a pleasant, low‑stress atmosphere

However, the transfers up to the ski resorts can often take longer than the flight itself I've just returned from a great week's skiing at Alpe d'Huez and this was my first trip through Grenoble Airport. It offered a shorter transfer time than Lyons or Geneva airports My flight into Grenoble last Saturday was delayed for 2 hours due to early morning fog. Speaking to other passengers and the aircrew, this can be a problem for the airport but fortunately, our pilot made what turned out to be the right decision by waiting on the tarmac in the UK. The other flights which left at their scheduled time were diverted to Lyons and the passengers on those flight had to be bussed back to Grenoble Airport, adding 2 more hours coach time to their overall journey Grenoble is a small regional airport and has to cope with a deluge of charter planes at the weekends as the holidaymaking hordes descend. They don't have any docking gates, meaning that passengers either walk to the terminal or are bussed in I was impressed that buses werre immediately available on our arrival and we were able to negotiate immigration before the main crush of passengers arrived. One weakness is that the queueing area for immigration is outdoors There are 3 luggage carousels but they're not large and the other main flaw of the airport revealed itself at this stage - due to passengers being slow through immigration, the carousel soon got full of unclaimed bags, meaning that more bags couldn't be put on it. My sister were lucky in that our bags came out early before the logjam occurred - one perk of being the first to check in! The annoying thing is that the airport provided luggage handlers who should have been stacking suitcases to maximise space on the carousel but the 2 men were more interested in texting on their phones and chatting rather than doing their job, hence the big pile up and delay in suitcases coming out My sister and I were lucky to beat the main crush and got our bus transfer to resort but I know a few skiers had to catch a later bus Fortunately, there was no fog today on our journey home. The 4 check in desks for our airline were manned and the check in process was swift with the bonus of check in staff smiling despite it being 7 in the morning There are a few shops selling last minute gifts and small food outlets. It was a bit disappointing to pay 5 Euros for a croque monsieur which we had to then microwave ouselves The security queue was short and after a short wait in a slightly crowded departure lounge, our flight was dispatched on time Overall, I think that Grenoble did a good job of getting as many passengers through the system as possible. An air of organised chaos should be expected to some degree but it's worthwile for shorter transfer times to the ski resorts
