Like this adorable all-natural beauty shop/workshop where you can either by ready-made products or sign up for a course to learn how to make them yourself. A totally original concept in Paris, and incredibly affordable too. The two or three hour classes are offered each week and are between 25€-50€ each, products included! I've yet to test a class but I checked out the adorable classroom where the lessons are given and smelled some of the heavenly, organic ingredients used to make everything from body moisturizers and exfoliating masks to night creams and shampoos.

I am an American, and I'm addicted to my hair tools…read more No - I refuse to be ashamed! I use a hair dryer and flat iron at least a couple of days per week because I have a thick, wild mane and despite it being straight, it's often unruly... unless there's a good amount of deliberate intervention. And because I'd prefer to use hair appliances that actually work to their full potential, I skipped buying a 'dual voltage' flat iron while still in the States and instead opted to purchase one in France. If you think about the math, it works out: 35 EUR for an appliance that you'll actually own for future trips to Europe vs. a single blowout at the same cost. Convinced yet? Actually en route to the Monoprix in search of said flat iron, I noticed Cyra Lydo and decided to stop in. And I'm glad I did: I had at least a dozen flat irons to choose from... everything from travel-size Babyliss irons selling for 25 EUR to high-end heat tools. I picked a mid-range appliance and was quickly on my way. Result = good hair days throughout the duration of my trip, save for the day I was drenched in unexpected downpour. Tip for American travelers: Don't forget that the maximum temperature is expressed in Celsius vs. Fahrenheit!

My first time to the hammam after a much needed renovation…read more The space still feels authentic but more clean and pleasant than it used to be. You just need a bathing suit or stay in your underwear if like me you forgot to pack one in your suitcase. It's women only and most are topless. For 50 Euros, I got access to the facilities, including a steam room with a cold bath. They gave me a black soap that you're supposed to leave on the skin for ten minutes before going to get scrubbed by a lady. The scrub lasted just five minutes but she seemed quite efficient and I felt like I got my baby skin back afterwards. You can add a massage but I didn't, there are different options offered. Before getting dressed, you go to a last room to relax and enjoy a mint tea included in the package I'd picked. A lot of women go there to relax or spend time chatting quietly with a friend. It's definitely a different experience, nothing like the regular spas we are used to!
