We originally had my daughter enrolled in two different private schools that accepted her. We couldn't make up our mind on sending her to these really expensive schools. Of course, any parent wants their children to have the best education and that's all we strived for. It was a big dip in our bank account, we felt it was worth it. Nearing the end of summer, we backed down. We remembered how tough it was having both our children on different schedules. Our daughter was in Kamehameha preschool and our son at Royal Elementary (public school). We struggled finding someone to babysit for two different schedules. Yes, private schools do have more "off days". On days that we couldn't find a sitter, we would have our daycare as our back up. Being that private school this year was literally 3/4 our savings, we didn't think we had cushion to constantly send the kids to daycare if we couldn't find a babysitter. So we made the decision to have her in the same school as brother who is in enrolled in SPED. Our fears of robbing our child's education began. She didn't have as much homework as Kamehameha Preschools gave out, which may be a thumbs up for most parents. I actually enjoyed homework time with her. But we still do other things to make up for it. I do see a small decline in her academic interest but, were working on getting her back up. We can't rely solely on the school. The big 5 star review goes out to my sons SPED Preschool class: Ms. Angela and his teacher aide, Vanessa! Amazing, amazing, amazing people with beautiful souls! They truly do their best to help improve all my sons needs! It's been maybe a month in school and my boy is improving so much. I owe it all to these awesome ladies and his therapists! I warned them of my sons lack of immunity due to his condition, and they amaze me at how prepared they are. They sanitize everything a child touches and cleanliness is a must in this class. This schools SPED preschool was actually full at the time of admission, however, due to some personal issues with another school, the principal at this school accepted my son! I can see why their program was full. I plan to keep my son at this school for all his elementary days. So impressed with the quality of care. I almost cringe at the thought of him entering another classroom. I admire these women for all they are. His teacher, Ms.Angela has an app called Bloomz that allows us to message her about our son and she sends us updates as often as she can. She does her best to do daily updates but we don't expect that as she is a busy lady herself. She shows that she really loves what she does and has a passion for it. These are the teachers that deserve the best pay raise ever! If I was her boss, hands down.. her salary would double! Thank you ladies! Thank you Pearl Harbor for accepting my kids on such short notice!

Since my son's birthday was August 3rd I decided to enroll him in K at HFA since the cutoff was a bit later instead of attending the ELC another year. The kindergarten class he was in was VERY rigorous, highly structured, and expectations were very high. The side and the teacher were on it. My husband attended Catholic school all his life and he said that is what Catholic school is like. There were times I worried that my son wasn't ready for K. The teacher assured me he was doing ok. He recieved praise for good work and consequences for any poor choices he made in class. At first I was put off by the behavior chart but realized this helped my little guy. When I truly realized this teacher was great was when we had to transition distance learning due to COVID. It was incredible to see my son know exactly what to do, even though he was online. This teacher had the routines down. My son participated as if he was still in class responding to her attention getters. We planned to have my son enroll in public school after his year at HFA so we did just that. His report card from HFA was not stellar. I was worried because I knew I needed him to take a test at the public school he was going to enroll in. He took the test to check to if he had the readiness skills of a first grader and he passed and was able to enter 1st grade. To add, he is doing amazing in first grade. If finances were not tight, we would have loved to continue here. Thank you Miss Lorna, Mrs. Koga-Higa (she left), and Ms. Ng (who wasn't my sons teacher but always kept an eye out for him)!

Kids file into the carpool area... It's so refreshing to hear the simple chatter from the carpool benches.... The chatter is not so simple at all actually... Some younger voices mix in with the mixed pitch of the older voices, discussing supportive reasons for why "it has to BE via the use of electricity..." Says the shorter kid to the very tall older one, and other colorful discussions mix in with the somersaults of laughter and cheerful noises... The group among the benches is a fun display of a rainbow of uniqueness each child sporting their own style of clothing... Free form talking free form choices... Amazingly one teacher use able to identify each car and it's matching parents and every child's name calling out the childs name there have been 30 cars so far! Seeming to know every car for every child and preteen as more roll in to pick up their happy child, the upbeat teacher spots them out easily as they approach. One kid calls out to the well known teacher, "Byye, I love you" amid praise and "aww" from some kids and embarrassed chuckles from preteen boys. Peer support here. It seems more true to say Ohana support exists here. As the carpool line has a pause the chatter continues, a school performance arts instructor encourages a few kids "OK why don't you start practicing it..." One or 2 early teen male voices start to sing and the oh so telling voice (of change) cracks between high/low notes and gets fun remarks from his peers as they show off their squeaks to share in the moment. The carpool line starts up again, more carpool line chatter... The Physical fitness instructor honors a selfy request and one kid calls to another "wait" as the day seems to come soon to an end. "Thanks Mom" one kid says as the car wheels slowly roll away... Assets... The day ends too soon.

We've been at Navy Hale Keiki School for a little under 2 years and could not be more satisfied!…read more Prior to our experience at NHKS, we had our girls at a Christian school; although the education was good, we felt a lack of communication from the school with events and requirements always popping up at the last minute. As a dual military family, with high optempo jobs and a frequent travel, early and often communication makes our life much easier. At NHKS we always feel well informed. The teachers communicate often with parents and identify early potential issues. The office staff responds quickly to requests and seems to know every child at the school. Teachers work with students to expand on their strengths and build up any weak areas. For example, my daughter's teacher identified, prior to the first trimester ending that my daughter was reading just below grade level. The teacher sent a note home for us on daughter's status, along with some tips for at-home learning. The teacher increased 1 on 1 time with the TA during the school day. Within 3 months, my daughter caught up and is now working slightly above grade level. Most importantly, my daughter continues to love reading. Our girls have had some bumps on the playground; school always sends home an injury slip or gives me a call. One night my daughter told me a boy kicked her on the playground. It didn't seem too serious, but we contacted the teacher. Both her teacher and the other K teacher took the report very seriously and had an answer for me by the next day. One of the boys was taking his Jedi training a little too seriously and my daughter ran into him. It was early in the school year, so the teachers reinforced the playground rules. While talking to a co-worker whose son was at the school, he relayed a story about his son. It turns out his son was the Jedi in training and he confirmed the school took the incident seriously. NHKS conducts a daily flag ceremony and emphasis service through the year. In Dec NHKS hosted Pearl Harbor Survivors & WWII vets for lunch, classroom visits and performances by the keiki. It was a top notch day and so humbling to see our kids and amazing veterans bonding across the generations. I can't say enough good things about NHKS. Yes, it's pricey, but everything is in Hawaii. You can tell each teacher cares about the kids and puts 100% effort into them.
