I've been a fan of the Adelaide Night Market waaaay before it actually got given the go ahead by the council. The original plan seemed to want to create the same atmosphere as the hustle and bustle of night markets dotted around Asia, and taking inspiration from the Suzuki Night Market in Melbourne. What has actually come to fruition is something very different from my own personal experiences.
There are not nearly enough stalls, and most of them sell food or drink. Very little of arts and crafts, and there just isnt the cosyness that you would expect. What few stalls there are though, they are very good at selling their wares. You should give the chicken or beef skewers a go, or have freshly made kuew tew, jelly grass tea or even lemonade to quench your thirst should the weather permit you to do so. There is also a regular stand selling funny tshirts at very reasonable prices, aswell as a small arts stall, and custom jewellery stand too.
Every time I go, there are a couple more stalls, and a few more regulars that I spot visiting. I have seen whole families get off the bus just next to the stalls, and just as quickly get back on them to go home. But there are also people who sit on the grass, enjoying a chat and eating with friends, and all the while enjoying listening to the guest musicians for the evening. It is a very kid friendly place, and a good event to go after the shops have closed and you feel a bit peckish. Something different.
I am a supporter of the dreams of the people of the city and have ventured into this venue most Sunday nights if im around, and giving them my custom.
The Night Market is on until the last Sunday of March. If you haven't been to this yet, give it a go, support the initiative, and its aspirations to make this city a better place. read more
