It has a bit of a warehouse feel, and some clearance sales lying around, but also a fairly respectable selection, including things that aren't all that easy to find; some nice vegetarian specialty items and a decent international section. They have ample fresh fruits and vegetables and a lot of dried beans and grains, so we're not talking unhealthy food either. The location is reasonably convenient, near the hospital with ample bus access and a train station on the other side of the hospital. Some of the sale items will understandably be a tad sketch, buy you can certainly find some deals here.

I've gotta say, I was pretty impressed with the range and presentation of fruit and veg. Tucked just inside a Spar-owned shopping centre, Mother of All Fruits occupies a huge floor space. Most of this is taken up by rows of fresh produce, but there's also a section for packaged and frozen goods. The range of fruit and veg is great and their herbs come in huge bunches for around $2.95 each. There are also lots of "bucket" specials to be had where you get a reduced price for buying a large amount. For $30, I filled a green bag and walked out with a tray of 20 bowen mangoes. Pretty good value, especially the $10 tray of mangoes. Whilst extremely well organised and well presented, the only thing I don't like about this produce store is that it feels a little too much like a supermarket. I remain faithful to the Gabba Fruit Market, which has a more local feel to it and has a less hectic carpark.

The Schulte family runs it and with that you're guaranteed amazing meats & small goods. The place also features a walk-in Fromagerie with a brilliant selection of imported and local cheeses. I'm of course biased t wards the Swiss raw milk cheese available there but there are many other brilliant options from local goats milk cheese to English cloth bound cheddar. There's a bar/restaurant at the entrance, and once inside you're greeted with a deli, fruit shop, butcher, dedicated cheese room, an organic whole foods store, and soon there will be a bakery too. I have to say it plainly. All the fruit and vege I've had has been sensational. If it's local, it will tell you where it's from. The butchers are Schulte's in the Lockyer Valley (yay, award winning butcher!) Basically, if you're near West End and you're after fruit, veg and meat, The Stores is for you.

An online voucher promising 10 kilos of meat at an extremely affordable price led me into Brisbane Bulk Meats and my experience in store and the quality of the product will see me go back. It was a typical summer day when I went to pick up my prize and the cool environment that greeted me as I entered this local butcher immediately put me in a good mood. The cheery gentleman that greeted me with a loud and exuberant hello only exacerbated that feeling. As he collected up my assortment of lamb, pork, sausage and steak he chatted cheerily as all about him what seemed like a dozen staff filled trays, helped other customers and washed up. The whole experience left me feeling good about the fact the food I was about to consume was coming from such an experienced and efficient team. And after cooking up some of their hamburger patties and pork steaks I feel even better.

They had a strange butterflied cut of pork that had a lot of fat on it and I couldn't see any free-range chicken. Despite not finding any meat that interested me, I did find well-priced free-range eggs, only $3.50 for a dozen. Don't pay $6 next door in the fruit shop! Service was fast and friendly and it seems to be a clean, well-kept butcher. Their range of meat just didn't take my fancy.

Well, for starters it's brand new and the lay-out, products on offer and lighting are, I'm convinced, all designed to make you feel comfortable and comfortable to spend up. From the farmer-market inspired fruit and veg section to the brightly-lit health and wellbeing aisle full of demographic-specific products like chia seeds, maca powder and protein concoctions, to the in-store sushi bar and cafe - this supermarket is a rabbit hole. One step through the doors and you're falling down a steep spiral of supermarket wonder. I popped in very quickly for only a few items and came away with half a trolley. Such is the power of shrewd marketing and specials (and lack of my willpower). For now, the novelty is still there and it's actually a decent supermarket to shop without frustration at other shoppers.

They price the fruits and vegetables at Monier Fresh at competitive prices so almost every time, I do my fruit shopping here. The have a huge variety of fruit and what Woolies doesn't have, they're more likely to have it. The produce are so fresh and for the sizes all are great value for money. All the fruit and vegetables are immaculately presented you almost don't want to take something away to ruin its presentation. The family who run this fresh produce shop are very friendly and always willing to lend a helpful hand in fruit and veg picking.

So for me personally, it's not where I do my grocery shopping. Plenty do though. But when I pop in here, it's usually for a snack or lunch, or dinner while on campus late. The chocolate aisle. There's always something on special. I loooove me some chocolate! Frozen microwave meals! Again, always on special, which is great for the starving uni student. I also noticed Woolies appear to have a range of packaged meals which look pretty darn good. While I haven't tried, and they are a little more expensive than the typical meals, they're still cheaper than most meals available on campus. The deli not only sells hot chicken, but they also sell hot chips, and you can get a hot chicken and chips meal for next to nothing. I think Woolies is my new favourite food spot on campus.

There's so many good Woolworths around Brisbane - Gasworks, Spring Hill - but it's odd to see one that just seems neglected. The fresh produce section is understocked and the whole place just looks messy. There was also no baskets by the entry and stacks almost head-height by the registers despite the fact it was not at all busy. They probably have such a consistent Mi-Goreng racquet going on with the uni students that they don't really need to pay attention to much else. The other really annoying thing about it, apart from the droves of students loitering around the front and yelling at each other, is that it's impossible to get phone reception while you're in there, which makes it really tricky to google a recipe or check your internet banking without having to go outside and head back in. I'd always thought supermarkets were pretty uniform but this one was a let down. I really tried to work 'gross-ery' into this review but sometimes you can't have everything.

Pop in for the essentials and to grab some tomato sauce when you run out, but not so much a place for your weekly grocery shop.
