Bank Of Scotland
This is a small branch of the Bank of Scotland which seems to operate more limited opening hours…read morethan some of the bigger branches in the city centre. The bank doesn't have business banking facilities so if you have change to cash you will probably be limited to just 5 bags per day. There is also no foreign exchange available at this branch. The branch has two cash machines at the front and a couple of teller desks inside, along with a welcome point. I have found the staff to be particularly helpful in this branch, even though it doesn't offer full Bank of Scotland services. One thing I particularly liked when I was last in was how all female staff members were wearing a uniform - it was great to be able to tell who was a staff member immediately because of this. Another thing to bear in mind if you are a Bank of Scotland customer is that sometimes the queue for a cashier is shorter than that for the cash machines so you can save time by going to one of the tellers for your withdrawal.

I use it as a back -up for my main bank account but as I have become older it has in many ways been the mainstay of my financial future. My only concern is that it does not become too big and loses the personal touch, I have always had 100% customer satisfaction and I am not that easy to please. Long may it last.

I had been a good member of the union for about 18 months,i saved and even had a small loan with them. However,i got shot of my own bank (LIoyds TSB)for the amount of charges they were levying against me so i called into the Hamilton place branch of the union to upgrade my account which would have included a debit card to be told "Sorry,we cannot give you a card as you are not in paid employment. Now,let me make my situation clear here. First of all,i wasn't some deadbeat on the dole,i am a genuinely disabled person who has his own house and i was getting about £220 per week clear from the DSS,my mortgage was paid for and i am rates exempt with no bad debts but still they refused me a poxy debit card because i wasn't in "paid employment". Well, suffice to say i am no longer a member of that Credit Union,in fact i now bank with a non-status bank who have given me a good Mastercard Debit card so up yours capital, here is one customer who is getting on all right without you and,as far as loans are concerned i joined another Edinburgh Credit union who cater for my loans request just nicely. They're gain and your loss.

They've recently closed the smaller Stockbridge location, forcing me to come into this site more now, but I can't say I've had a bad experience yet. I asked a worker there for help who said that since it's not a Bank of Scotland card, that there was nothing they could do about it, even though it's THEIR machine. So I have to contact my bank to disputed the transaction. Of COURSE my bank shows a £150 withdrawal even though the machine gave me zero pounds and took my ATM card. Great start to a vacation. Thanks Bank of Scotland.

They boast five self service machines for a wide range of transactions. You do need to go to the cashier for Euro currency deposits. If you have a euro currency account then you can only withdraw money from it Mon to Fri, not on Saturdays. You may deposit money on Saturdays but they will reach your account the following Monday due to that department only open M to F. It is a quite busy branch during lunch time and Saturdays so keep that in mind if you need to visit it. I do hope they had one extra person for handling customer transactions on a desk, so only three stars in my review. Yes you can do better Barclays if you want to.
Barclay's has been my UK bank for a fair bit of time now, nearly 9 years if i want to be exact…read more I've persevered with them as i felt like i got fairly good service (bar one incident where they lost a cheque i was trying to deposit) and they were one of the few banks that were not bailed out by the government back in 2008 when the economy took a steep dive downhill. with all the hassle involved in changing a bank and despite there only being two Barclay's branches in edinburgh i stuck with them. and then in what i'm assuming they thought a moment of genius they decided to combine their two branches into what i would assume is one super branch in a brand new shop location next to the apple store on prince street. so big new shiny branch with even extended opening hours on a saturday (yes they are open til 3pm!). this all sounds good, but for the number of times i've been there i've never been able to complete any banking transaction in under 15 minutes. simple things like moving funds from my ISA to my current account or getting international money when i'm going travelling. and why is there a wait you may ask? well in their stroke of genius to create this super branch they decided to get 4 self service do it all computer tellers. they are fairly handy even if the touch screens are a bit rubbish and it takes me ten minutes to type in someone's account details to transfer them money. but the really annoyance which is the main cause for my two star review is that they now only have two real live teller desks. TWO! and the queue for these desks is at least a half hour wait at any time during the day. i've been stood there for 45 minutes waiting to get to the front of the line with my annoyance clearly being felt by the rest of my company in the queue. i have to say reducing the number of tellers when combining banks was probably one of the daftest things i've ever seen. yes the electronic tellers are useful but the majority of people that walk into the bank need to see an actual person so it's just a bit shocking how Barclay's have really missed this important bit when setting up the new branch. yes i realise this sounds a bit ranty, but when you've spend 30 minutes queuing for two minutes of a teller's time you may find yourself a bit ranty as well. seriously Barclay's get it sorted!

I stopped by to get some of the local currency in my first 24 hours in Scotland and before heading out to get my rental car. The exchange rate was good and the worker friendly. For the rest of my trip, I went with ATM withdrawals as the fee my bank charged me was small and they ran the conversions. Going through the in-person exchange was a confidence builder, especially at the beginning of the trip. I was asked questions about how I wanted the currency and what exchange rate I wanted. It helped me pay attention to what the different bills and coinage were.
