It is very cheery! They provide earplugs for grannies and all who have audio sensitivity. Worship bands are often a tad louder than sensitive ears like, so the volunteers are prepared with ear plugs. My first time there, the pastor was baptizing before preaching and there was so much love and community in the room. At this time in our USA history (2016) there is a lot of division in the country due to the presidential election, and we also have experienced some terrible shootings on our own soil, and witnessed horrific tragedies abroad. The message from the pulpit at Bay Farm is what you would hope.. I have heard no hints of party politics, and what I do hear is a message of love, respect, peace, strength, and courage to follow Jesus. God's Word is used throughout the pastor's messages, and he brings the timeless stories to life with information about the historical context and geography, and the meanings of words and phrases as they were used throughout scripture. For instance in a recent teaching on the story of the Good Samaritan, he helped the audience picture the road, terrain, danger, the relationships between the different types of people, and why it was such a big deal that the injured traveler might not have wanted to have to rely on a Samaritan. A "bible based church" means to me that you can trust that you are hearing the word of God, and is so much clearer and easier for me to understand than trying to sort through the individual human bias of a different style of church. No prosperity theology here. I can't yet speak to the feel of BBQ's and community events but there is every indication that socials will be welcoming; in August they were having their big picnic on a day we were there, and pastor encouraged everyone to reach out and meet someone new that afternoon (I could not attend.). My advice to anyone new, don't wait for people to approach you, be friendly and you will find people who will be friendly back! In all things, you will grow most when you join things, so attend regularly, join a LifeGroup (small group that meets weekly), and volunteer, is my advice for being known.

Best of all the teachings are understandable! This is something that is huge for me - and that I had a hard time finding at other churches before I came to BFCC. The messages are easily applicable to today's world and our lives and still 100% bible based. Credit to Pastor John who is phenomenal at what he does. God has given him a gift. I also like that there are two overhead projectors with the text as well as the music lyrics for the day. So you always know what is going on and don't feel out of place. Plus the chairs are so comfy. I especially love the upbeat and contemporary music that we sing and listen to. The music is so uplifting and wonderful each and every time. The young couples group (which meets weekly) offers relevant bible teachings and a heartwarming family community. I very much encourage you to try this group if you are interested; sadly our schedules did not coincide with the meeting which is why we no longer attend. I hope to return to the group in the future. I have never loved attending church as much as I do until I started attending BFCC. I have zero complaints. Five of five.

They don't charge a monthly fee and only ask for donations to cover the cost of new belts and certificates for testing. Lots of kids around the neighborhood come for class and it's something that most of these families would not be able to afford, so really it's a wonderful public service that they're providing. We started coming to Sunday services and really enjoy the teachings. As a church they definitely 'walk the walk'. They have a breakfast on Sunday mornings for the homeless people in the area. They invite underprivileged and at risk youth to learn self control and discipline through martial arts. They've even started a garden to grow fresh fruits and vegetables right in the middle of Oakland. Maybe I can find a church closer to home. I'm sure the money I pay for gas and wear and tear on the car would cover the monthly dues for a karate class. I don't think I could ever find as much heart in either one though.

I was there for a celebration of life of one of my high school classmates who passed away on September 11, 2001. This time I was invited by my sister in Christ (Miss Dora Jean) to attend the Mt. Zion District Association Women Ministry Union. Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church was the host of this spiritual gathering. She is also my high school classmate. I was there not only to support her but also to listen to the inspired and uplifting messages from several pastors. I am grateful that I accepted Dora's invitation to hear her deliver the good news of God's kingdom. Indeed it was a blessing to be there at Evergreen.

I've been in CA for almost twenty years and probably have tried about ten churches and I have never been to a similar church. I never had any issues with other churches but I have never been to a church where it would make me feel renewed during and after every service. I always blamed myself, thinking that it was because I seeking or was spiritual enough. Their recipe is simple: they believe in a God who is alive and can be evoked and present during the service, and you will feel it, no matter how your spiritual life is. If your intention is to be closer to God, you will experience that, no doubt! They truly worship. Their preaching is biblical, not to please people but to please God but still in a caring and loving way, God's way. Christianism would be in a different place if every church would prioritize the presence of Jesus as this church does. A huge plus to our family is their children's care. In other churches, it would always be super timing consuming to check in all our four kids in classes. Besides that it always would be a lot of convincing for them to be apart. By the time we would be done we would always miss a bunch of the service. Some churches even have the kids in the service for the first part of the service which was torture for me as my mom's brain would stay on plus keeping four children behaving for 30min isn't discreet enoughfor a church environment. This church doesn't do that. The kids initially stay together which is easy for them to let me go and people will be there before the time of the service, not a thing in the churches I have gone in the past. There, the kids actually have fun and learn about applicable things for their lives as children rather than just learning stories from the Bible like fairytales. Also, there is not much convincing to get them to church because they just love to be there. I don't hear "it is so boring" like I did about other churches. Gosh! The other thing for me is that people are super genuine. It is the norm there. I had given up about finding social groups that feel genuine and these people don't even try. It is super natural and the norm for them. I feel like I finally found my people.
