Joy Lennon is a quack who lives in Clontarf, a lady who my father sees on a regular basis. Joy has…read moresome sound medical training in that she is a nurse (NOT a GP though, I must point out at this point). As well as her real medical qualification, Ms. Lennon is also a "trained" homeopath and acupuncturist. Now, some of you may have heard a lot of pros and cons about this whole homeopathy lark: it's just water, and homeopaths themselves admit as much. Only they think that it's magical water. It's pretty weird. Herbal medicine has been around a very long time, it's advocates point out. Yes it has. The stuff that works becomes "medicine", without the herbal prefix, and the stuff that doesn't work is just bits of twigs and such. My Dad goes to see this lady every couple of months. The usual diagnosis he receives is "You're intolerant to wheat". Now, I'd like to point out that in any of the previous fifty-odd years of my father's life, no actual real doctors have ever noticed this intolerance to wheat, and that Ms. Lennon is no way qualified to make this diagnosis. Nor has she ever cured this alleged intolerance to wheat, so I don't see why he keeps going to her. But every couple of months he does, and writes a nice cheque at the end, too. He brought me there once, and she pricked with little needles that had been rubbed with wheat and milk and cat fur and such. I seem to remember the results were inconclusive, but I don't think that I'm bothered by wheat or dairy or cat fur, and if I was, you can bet your arse that I'd go to see a real doctor who'd been through medical school and not some kooky lady peddling woo to gullible members of the middle classes. Phew, that feels better.

As a beginner I would definitely recommend attending Viv's class as she is incredible at what she does & makes the class enjoyable while ensuring a good workout. They're…read morealways either too smelly or too regimented or too fake or have terrible schedules or not enough choice. Enter the Elbow Room. It's not quuiite five star (purely because the classes don't fit exactly to my schedule, so I'd prefer if there were a few more to choose from), but it's very nearly there. Firstly, it's in a very old building that's been renovated nicely, in that bit of Dublin that's kinda Smithfield, kinda Stoneybatter. There's something about the approach to the building that instills a calm in me already - there's nothing more off-putting than trying to get your zen on in a community hall or office block. The calm continues inside with nice homely decor, and an overriding sense of tranquility (candles and insence are great aren't they!) Then there is the range of classes available. Everything from Vinyasa Flow to Hatha, Ashtanga and Hot Yoga. As I said, it would be great if they had a choice of one of these per day - they are spread out over the week - so this won't be the studio for you if you want to do only one type per day. There is also a free vege lunch if you attend one of the day time classes. The classes that I've been to so far have generally had about 15 people in them, so it's never been too crowded. I've also not had a teacher that I haven't rated highly. This is all after just a few weeks in this spot, so come back for the re-review in a few months time, but for now, I'm zenned up like a *&*%^!

Then he told me to lie down on the couch with the needle in my back, first I objected but then he assured me that it'd be fine. I guess he injected me with something behind my back that's why the needle was not supposed to hurt me when lying down flat on the couch. I still cannot comprehend that. After the session my left arm was bruised and paralysed but I did not complaint thinking it may go away with time. It's been over 6 months now and the pain both in my left shoulder joint and left shoulder blade/lung persists. I had a couple of lung X-rays and they detected some damage in my left lung, where he injected or stabbed something behind my back without even showing me the depth of the needle or perhaps an injection he made given his invitation to lie down flat on a couch with a needle supposedly sticking out of my left shoulder blade? I dont understand his manipulation. Physiotherapy is not helping either. I tend to think that he intentionally damaged my left lung and muscles. I had accupuncture sessions before by Chineese practioners and never had any trauma or health issues. I went there hoping to relax but came back traumatised and damaged. He seems to have positive reviews overall, perhaps he just disliked me or someone paid him to damage my lung? Still puzzled and left with no answer...

When I got there, there was no one at reception and one therapist was doing a client's nails. She asked me what I wanted. In those words. I was immediately put off. When I explained that I had an appointment but was here to use the facilities first, she gave me a look that was beyond annoyed. Even her client raised an eyebrow at her attitude and then gave me a little smile. I was then brought to a small changing room that wasn't set up and the therapist started looking for robes and slippers. She then explained that I need to go to the gym area, get a code to get into the lady's changing rooms that belong to the gym but there are no locks so best to leave everything in the spa. I asked her about the shower situation and was told I could only shower in the gym. Right, okay then. Determined to not let that take away from my afternoon of bliss (in my mind that's what I had coming), I changed, walked over to the gym, got the code from reception, went to the lady's changing rooms, left towels, robe etc in the unlocked locker and enjoyed the facilities. It was fairly cleaned and not too busy so hey, things were starting to look up. When it was time for my massage appointment, I showered, dried my hair and went back to the spa. On my way back, another therapist walks towards me with another client, explaining her where everything is and just making the usual chit chat. That's what I would've expected also. back in the spa, the first therapist, who never introduced herself, held a door open for me, no words so I go in. There's a massage table, she doesn't say a word and leaves so I lie down and wait. She eventually comes back, still doesn't say a word, doesn't ask me whether I'm comfortable, have any aches or pains or areas that need attention or avoidance and just puts some non-descriptive oil on my back. She works away while I'm totally uncomfortable, the head rest isn't cushioned, my face gets squashed and I'm thinking of leaving. She's finally finished and mumbles something, I can't understand her. I get dressed and hope that she really is the nail specialist. I pick an Essie polish out of about 30 different Essie and OPI products, some of the OPI already empty but still on display. I'm not being asked what shape I want my nails done, she just works away. A second therapist comes in and takes a seat at reception next to the nail bar. She starts chatting to the girl who does my nails, asking her over and over again how to put in voucher bookings into the system. They talk as if i wasnt there and I badly wanna get out of there by then. There aren't even any proper magazines I could've flicked through so I kinda had to listen to them and their booking system/voucher code problems. Me nerves! Finally, a top coat is applied to my nails and I ask whether it is quick-dry so I can get the hell out of there. The girl just sniggers at me and says: no, you have to wait. WTF? This is honestly one of the worst experiences in terms of poor customer service in a spa/beauty environment that I have ever had. The massage as such was ok. If I was pretending I'm in some foreign country and can't communicate cause I don't speak the local language it would've been ok I guess. But I wasnt in Bali or Cambodia, I was in a spa in a hotel in Dublin. One that I will never ever return to.

Undeterred I made a second booking several months later. Shortly before my appointment time I received an email saying they were missing some information to complete the booking. The requested information was sent but despite this the appointment was never completed. Upon ringing the salon to find out what was happening, I was met with a rude attitude from the supposed manager. Apparently the salon is busy so little effort was made to rectify the problem or apologise. I found the salon reception to be unprofessional and rude. My day had been arranged around this visit and I was left feeling frustrated and angry. Needless to say I won't be taking up any more of their time.
