When our 15yr old daughter was caught taking the family car & showed signs of abusing drugs unfortunately rather than face the consequences of her behavior, she accused dad of letting & encouraging her to do those self destructive things and mother seized that opportunity to initiate legal action in family court & the criminal court against Dad. In the midst of the fall out of that chaos, it was recommended that we contact the Bodin Group. I initiated the contact and made the 1st 3way call with mother, Doug Bodin & I. When we asked about his firms role, he explains that they help us choose a safe program that fit the child's needs, because there had been some press about wilderness camps and academies that were abusive to the kids. A few days later according to mother it was no longer necessary to consider sending the rebellious 15yr old away because she had a change of heart & told her therapist that she wanted to put her life back on a healthy path. Fast forward 3mo, Dad gets an email from mother, she & Bodin had unilaterally shipped not only the 15yr old, but also our 13yr old son out of state to "lock down" wilderness camp programs. I never received one phone from Bodin! But then mother was paying the $500/day+ fees for each child's 60 to 90 days wilderness "experience"... for both kids $30,000/month. Shipping your children off to "behavior modification" programs is clearly as much a rich man's game as is a 5yr custody battle to try to remove father from the lives of 5 children. I call Doug Bodin immediately, to ask how could this happen without any involvement from father??? Yes, at the time mother had 100% physical custody, but I was still legally their father! And what had happened to the "turn around" attitude in my daughter in the 3 intervening months? No answer. And where were they... out of state? No answer. Since then I've essentially been told "no retainer fee paid to Bodin, I can't talk to you". It's clear to me that the parent with the $$$'s is the client, not the other parent & not the teenager. How could it be in a teens' best interest to be admitted in such extreme programs and neither Bodin or the institutions selected INSISTing that father be involved w the staff of those institutions, if nothing else than to get a holistic therapeutic assessment? I find out that my daughter is at an "Academy" in Utah, and my son is in South Carolina. I spend a few hours writing an email to "Uinda Academy" where my daughter is and attaching documents which clearly PROVE she was admitted with a one sided perspective from mother that conveniently fits her campaign to remove father from the children's lives. Their reply? "...I have cc'd your requests to [your 'ex"], and she will get a hold of you via the legal system in order to let us know how we can correspond with you...". I replied "...As a parent with joint legal custody of ___, please clarify why your institution's communication with me as her father would be restricted or in any way be less than that afforded to her mother? Given the nature of the facts I have presented you with, and the incorrect assumptions which ___ admission and treatment have been based upon, please clarify why your institution's position would be to do anything other than consider BOTH parents perspective on an equal basis moving forward... I have a time urgent interest and a legal right to be well informed about __ status & well being. I believe access to records, being kept informed of progress & a dialogue with the staff... is the legal right of both mother & I..." Their reply?? "...I am sorry we cannot get into a dialogue yet. I need specific writing from a judge saying we can do that..." Wow!!! My daughter is in not only a "lock down" institution, but a "lock out" one! I started researching these "Academies" and was shocked at what I discovered. The one my son is at thanks to Bodin & my "ex" has a Director that lost their license for "inappropriate sexual conduct with a patient"! This industry is big $$$'s and has a very dark underside, their are support groups for people recovering from having been sent to these progams, there are many children that have died or gone missing, & clearly there is a pattern of manipulative parents in divorces using the system to extract the other parent from a child's life. See for yourself. Do some research before rather than working things out as a family using local resources, defaulting "raising your child" to people you & Bodin really don't know. http://www.facebook.com/notes/stu-carson/signs-of-abusive-teen-treatment-centers-wilderness-program-academies/10151178786951451 http://www.facebook.com/notes/stu-carson/squirm-in-seat-take-a-pill-rebellious-teen-ship-of-to-a-behavioral-modification-/10151182551501451

We've been enrolled for over one year, come religiously twice a week, and my kids still love coming here. The staff knows how to motivate kids and keep learning fun. When kids feel happy, passionate and energized about learning, it makes a big difference and Kobad and his team of talented tutors have cracked the code in doing this. I have 2 different types of learners, and Mathnasium knows how to cater to each child's individualized needs. I have one child who has always been super strong at math, understands concepts quickly and retains information well. Through the efforts of Mathnasium as well as our own support at home, this student is now in the accelerated math program at school. My other student is a little less diligent, often makes careless errors and is more of an average math student. However, he is now in the top math group too for his grade. Kids may do their math homework here and the tutors will help them, but I don't usually have my kids do this unless they are feeling overwhelmed with the amount of schoolwork they have that day. Usually, I want to spend our time there learning Mathnasium's curriculum to make sure kids are getting incremental learning opportunities in addition to their school's content. While my kids go to an excellent school, I feel math in CA feels a little behind compared to other states (esp east coast states) and certainly behind that of many other countries. Mathnasium gives me peace of mind that my kids are being appropriately challenged. My parent philosophy on Math is that just like anything else, the more practice and exposure you have, the better you become. Overall, I am very happy esp because the kids never complain and are very happy to go twice a week. They have made friendships with the tutors and speak about their Mathnasium "friends" often at home. We highly recommend this center.

We are lucky to have had both our kids go through Children's House of Los Altos (CHLA) and get such…read morea great foundation! CHLA offered our kids a perfect balance of freedom to follow their curiosity within a rich, loving guided framework that provided structure. Besides it being a great school for all the obvious reasons like loving and caring teachers, to a well rounded development of the kids' reading/math/science/motor skills, the school also has an amazing art program and music classes. I could talk in length about each of these (e.g. I was shocked when my 4 year old came back home once and started talking about Frank Lloyd Wright and Fallingwater! And another time was shocked how my child was able to basically do multiplication at the age of 4, but not by rote - by understanding the concept of how multiplication is basically addition over and over again). But let me move on because there is one program that deserves a special mention - its called CEC (Cognitive Enrichment Class) and what it is is a term-length project where kids get to build something and be involved in all aspects of that building, and learn about various scientific and technical elements of that. For my son and daughter it was designing their very own wooden cars for a derby race. They spent months designing the car and decorating it and learning about concepts like ramps, and friction, and aerodynamic shapes, and so on. And it all ended in a derby event where all the kids in their class got to bring their cars and the race happened. The kids even measured how far various cars went to put the hypotheses they had developed over the course of the project to the test :) The CEC program basically was the main reason why we kept our younger child in CHLA for one extra year instead of sending her to TK at our local public school. CEC is such an amazing idea - giving kids at such a tender age this opportunity to sink their teeth into a long term project and really grapple with a problem from multiple angles is simply incredible! The school is truly a special place which was started decades ago by a lovely teacher who cared about children and their development. The tradition is being continued by her children and besides education, there is also a focus on the Parent-Teacher-Child community. Through the course of the year there are numerous super fun traditions that bring the teachers and kids and the parents together. Events like the annual Nutcracker show that the kids act in and the teachers put together, the Hoedown event in a local farm where the kids sing and dance and the parents are invited to have a picnic, the Haunted House event around halloween time when the entire school is magically transformed into a maze filled with surprise (and scary) characters, the Music Together concert, the Sip & See where kids walk the parents through their art and the event happens outdoors in a setting that could put an exhibition at the MOMA to shame, and everything else that we have grown to love to dearly! When we were looking for pre-schools for our elder child we had looked at numerous schools in the area and nothing felt right. Some felt overly strict and others were very la-di-dah. And then we chanced upon CHLA which almost felt like a Goldilocks moment, with the right balance of structure and freedom. Now that we've been through the program (twice), we feel that it really is the perfect blend of those elements. We are filled with gratitude for having had both our kids go through CHLA!

It has offered so much more than what our local TK option could provide. We're really grateful for this school.
