Then she goes you can come get your money back. I said I want it made again right. She said she can't make it the way I want it and can only make it with chicken, beef or whatever else meat they put in their enchiladas. Acapulco kicks Papacito's ASS. Far better food at half the price? I say YES! After much deliberation (the menu is GIGANTIC), I decided on a steak burrito with guacamole. HOLY MOLY. The steak itself was well done, which I had expected, but was nicely charred and packed a lot of flavor. The guacamole provided some wonderful zip and spice to the burrito, which just could not stay in its tortilla home. It was super delicious and inexpensive- Everything I could dream of! Having lived in the Mission District of San Francisco, I was spoiled daily with phenomenal Mexican food at every turn. The east coast is an ENTIRELY different story. You can imagine my delight, then, when I discovered Acapulco in my very own neighborhood! With it's red, white, and green awning, Acapulco looks like just about every other run-of-the-mill Mexican/Latin food restaurant. However, the food you'll find there is delicious, authentic, and cheap. You should not miss their fresh chips and salsa! This place is really great! My roommate brought me here because she claimed that they have Mexican food like we have in Oklahoma - legit. So we went and shared the chicken fajitas plus chips and pico. It was SO good! really fresh - great chicken and the peppers were perfect! The chips are freshly fried when you order chips and pico or chips and salsa. While I enjoy the freshness of the chips they were a little too oily for me and I found myself drying them off with a napkin before I ate them but seriously they're fresh hot chips so who am I to complain. Best cheap food in Greenpoint, great for brunch. Food is authentic Mexican and is also great for groups. Beer is cheap quesadillas are slamming, and steak fajitas are a must try. Breakfast is great but you have to get there before its over and on weekends it can get crowded but not crazy. The service is great and to those who disagree I'd like to point out that its a diner but its also a deli, you may have to get up walk five feet and pick a beer outta the fridge yourself. Completely unassuming from the outside and modest inside, this little Mexican joint should please those who can't seem to find good Mexican fare around town (for some reason, it's a big feat in this city). It has the feel of a diner, complete with counter and stools, and the crowd will remind you that you are in the terrain of artists. No Williamsburg-esque attitude though (i.e. they're actual artists). Great place for weekend brunch - relaxed, cheap and yummy. I'm addicted to the cheese enchiladas, although the huevos rancheros are excellent, as are the nachos (if you must they offer regular diner fare as well). Ok, so this place scores on atmosphere, but not much else. Two reasons: 1. Totally not authentic, despite being divey, which is weird. Never in my Texan life have I seen a Mexican omelet with broccoli in it. Gross, gross. And if you want a mexican sandwich, better to go to the Franklin Corner Deli. 2. More importantly, they have a problem with COUNTERFEIT MONEY. I kid you not. They gave me a fake $10 bill, which I found out when I tried to use it at Greenpoint Fruits and Deli, and when I came back they admitted it was fake. There are a lot of people here talking about authenticity, which I think is kind of funny because this place closes for a month every summer so the family who runs it can go visit family, presumably in Acapulco. This is not one of those bougie Brooklyn brunch places that are going to leave you out at least 20 bucks and hungry. Acapulco is one of the few places in Greenpoint where you really get your money's worth! Maybe being from Syracuse NY and not SoCal my restaurant specifications are a tad different, but the portion sizes are huge and you can have a tasty meal for around 5 bucks! That's insane! A bit disappointed, even though I really want to like this place. Did I order wrong? Well, this spot is about as authentic as a mexican "diner" as you're going to find in Brooklyn. They've got plenty of tables, a bar/counter with stools, and a casual relaxed vibe to boot. From the outside it looks like a tiny (possibly dirty) hole in the wall, but when you walk in you realize it is actually spacious, very clean, and organized. I ordered 4 tacos (you get two tacos per oder, which have to be the same), the carnitas and the steak. They are super-big (compared to most traditional style small tacos) and double tortillas for $6, so off the bat its a great deal. It is piled on with plenty of meat and the fixings (no guac though). However, both tacos were pretty dry and lacking in much flavor. Some of the better taco spots in Brooklyn, specifically around Sunset Park/park slope, the Broncos truck, for example when you bite into the carnitas that fatty rich juiciness just jumps out at you. None of that here. Nor did it seem like the steak tacos were flavored at all. I forced myself to finish one of each with healthy dosing of green salsa just to give it some punch and flavor. This place is so close to where I live and has gotten such rave reviews on Yelp that I'm hoping that: A) I caught them on a bad day or B) I ordered the wrong thing. So I was craving some charritos from Hoboken but I'm in Brooklyn so his seemed like the next best thing. I avoided another Mexican place because the reviews complained about a bad waitress. So I show up here and ended up with exactly what I was tying to avoid. I didn't get a name but the older woman was cold and I didn't like her, she was not only rude to me but another customer that was here also. I give this place 4 stars because there is a younger waitress, Emily, that is very professional and sweet, I like her better that's why they get 4 stars. In regards to the food, meh. As someone raised in Southern California, the worst part of living in Brooklyn is the lack of even decent mexican food. With one of my best buds moving to greenpoint I spend some time with my SoCal brethren up in the north-eastern corner of the borough. We yelped Mexican food the other day and after reading all these great reviews we couldn't help but be curious (and a little excited). So Ok, the chips and salsa were decent, but my friend is a vegetarian and ordered the veggie fajitas, which were nothing more than steamed vegetables. I have spent time in Mexico and never ever have seen broccoli as part of the cuisine. My chicken burrito was bland with a capital B and wasn't even wrapped, just folded over sloppily so it looked like it was packed with chicken popping out of the side but none inside the actual faux-burrito Maybe I'm just being too picky because I grew up on some of the best Mexican food in the country, but this place is a poor excuse one way or another. Acapulco is definitely one of the best places in Greenpoint for cheap AND delicious food. (Only as a runner up to the slew of cheap pierogi options.) It's hard to find good Mexican fare in Manhattan or Brooklyn, but once you've tried Acapulco you wont look any further! The portions are HUGE, ridiculously cheap, and super yummy! You can consume a button bursting meal here (including beer) for under $10. The guacomole is fantastic, the chips are hot and fresh, all of the meat dishes seem trustworthy... and for desert: MANGO SHAKES! I haven't tried any of their "gringo" dishes, but the crunchy french toast sounds temping. If you are dining in, you can sit at the diner-esque counter, where you can watch the making of your food and enjoy the Telenovela that is ALWAYS on the t.v. It was a Sat around 5:45pm,so not exactly prime time....I have a gluten allergy so I know that most Mexican places have options and i picked two that were highly likely to be gluten free. I asked for confirmation that my portion of our order (for a very hungry four) was in fact gluten-free and was told that "most items are cooked in oil"...umm, what? When I asked the girl (she sounded like a petulant teenager) on the phone if she wouldn't mind confirming with the chef/cook in charge whether the couple of my items from a large order were gluten free, she told me he was too busy and offered this kernel of advice: "if I was allergic I'd cook at home or order a salad" -- and hung up on me. What's worse is that my much more reasonable husband called back and tried to clarify the gluten-free issue with someone who sounded like a more reasonable, mature, staff member than the original and then.....SHE hung up on him, too! We both tried to call back several times to sort things out but they weirdly refused to answer either of our calls -- so, we are blacklisted??? My friend and I stumbled upon this place randomly one Friday afternoon. You would never expect that this place was worth anymore than two stars from the outside, but it is a real five-star place. 1) The price: While some of the traditionally cheap places further down on Manhattan Avenue have been raising their prices at many times the rate of inflation, this place still has those great pre-gentrification prices. Most dishes are below $6, and burgers are in the $3-and change range. 2) The beverage selection: While you can sit down and order your food from a menu, you get your beverage from one of the two walls of coolers, that have all Pepsi brands, all Coke brands, tons of independent brands, and a great beer selection. 3) The food: It tastes great and the menu is huge. 4) The TV: It plays Mexican soap operas... I've been hesitant to write a review on this neighborhood gem because I don't want to spoil it. Usually getting some good Mexican food means taking a long trip to Nix Tamal in Queens for me. So, discovering Acapulco is a blessing. The tacos are pretty good but I want to give a special remark about their seafood soup. I am always on the look out for great seafood soup or stew, and their Seafood Soup special platter stands out.
