Our minds can expand to infinite dimensions. A day passed without learning something new can only be categorized as a day wasted. If I'm correct in believing the meaning of life and the key to our continued survival lies in our pursuit of knowledge, then the public library system remains the government's greatest gift to its citizens. This past winter the Albright Memorial Library hosted a special After Hours film series featuring a double bill of "The Trouble with Cali" and "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls." The movies were preceded by a number of Looney Tunes shorts, probably because the screening was in the basement of the children's library and that was the only other DVD available. "The Trouble with Cali" is a locally shot and publically financed film directed by Paul Sorvino and written by his daughter Amanda. Though completed years ago, "The Trouble with Cali" has never been officially released; after exchanging some strong words with our county officials who demanded some return on their investment, Paul Sorvino delivered a Blu-Ray copy of his film to the library. The Albright Memorial Library is now the only place in America where you can behold the spectacle that is "The Trouble with Cali." Because the movie still remains unreleased, the Blu-Ray disc can't be removed from the building; however, any card-carrying member of the Lackawanna County library system can request a private screening. I attended the After Hours film series with a good friend of mine; this was my second time watching the disasterpiece and his first. I had a blast with "The Trouble with Cali" and so did the rest of the audience, howling with laughter at the terrible acting, inane dialogue and overly melodramatic moments. "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" is a true cult classic and straddles that fine line between genius and insanity. The screenplay was written by renowned film critic Roger Ebert and follows an all-female rock band as they discover the dark underbelly of the music industry. I owned the film for many years before my copy of the OOP DVD was lost in a move. "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" is a true counterculture masterpiece and represents the apex of director Russ Meyer's lengthy filmography. It was a little odd watching two NC-17 films in a children's library but this was well after closing time and there weren't any kids in attendance. Still, the explicit onscreen sex and violence wasn't the oddest thing I witnessed in the children's library that night: on my way out I noticed a copy of Pete Towsend's autobiography, but I digress. A local newspaper reporter was also in attendance; he interviewed me because I'm probably one of the few people outside of the Sorvino-clan that actually sat through "The Trouble with Cali" twice. I felt like a true film historian. The free film screenings were presented along with complimentary beverages and snacks provided by "the friends of the library." Any friend of a library is a friend of mine.

The gift selection is full of great items too like tarot cards and collectibles, and they host community events like poetry readings that I love attending. Library Express is a must-visit when in Scranton and I'm so grateful for all they add to the community!

The Back Mountain Memorial library has an excellent, helpful and friendly staff. They will always…read morego out of their way to assist you. If you want a book or other item that the library doesn't have, they can obtain it from another library in the Luzerne County Library System or make a request through an inter-library loan. The library is comfortable and feels like home. If you don't have the money to buy books, this is the place to go. With a library card, they are free to borrow for one, two or three weeks, depending on the age and other people's requests for a particular book. I have been using the library for all of my life, and if you don't have the money, you can really describe it as the People's University.

So, this is random. My friend, her baby, her two pit bulls, and myself pulled over to sleep in…read morethis library's parking lot. We are from California and went to Niagara Falls and with all the driving we desperately needed to sleep. We intended to rest for five minutes so we kept the truck running for the heater. Next thing you know a woman is at the driver's window asking us to turn the engine off because it was generating fumes. Two hours had passed with the truck running and all 5 of us sleeping! Oops! Well, this woman, who we believed worked for the library in some capacity, was the kindest and sweetest ever. She gave us a bag of animal cookies, chocolate, water, juice, and showed us where the bathrooms were. She didn't leave the truck til we assured her we were okay to drive. "God bless, we love you " she said. She really exemplified that love. She helped turn a rough nite of driving into a funny and completely unexpected experience. I will forever associate the North Pocono Library with this kindness and generosity. Plus they have a great community garden!!

I also noticed that this library does some wonderful community engagement activities and is conveniently located right off Route 11! It's also been very easy to renew the books I took out online so I could finish them, but that's a plus for the whole Luzerne County system.

I like the programs that the library offers, like the after school meal program for under privlidged kids that they hold 2 days a week. The materials selection is not as big as you would think, considering the massive size of the building, but I can understand, considering that the library had to be rebuilt a few years ago due to a major roof collapse during a bad snow and ice storm. I guess they are trying to rebuild their collection. There is a plenty of parking available in their parking lot, and they also sell coffee, tea, and snacks to help benefit the library. Very nice place to hang out. :-) *Top-notch bathrooms. They are very clean.

The nicest library I've ever been to. The kids section is huge and has tons of toys in addition to…read morebooks. The kids programs are incredible. Every week they have things for the kids to attend. The library also serves as a community center where people can meet to work on a puzzle together or have a book club and the local homeless also are welcome to hang out and pick up some free toiletries and things like that. It's just an absolutely amazing library and community center.

This is the library closest to my mother's house, and I've visited it often through the years…read more Somewhere in their archives they have me listed as a library card holder, though it's been a long time since I checked out a book here on my own account. My mother visits the library once a month and checks out any new audiobooks they might have. Thanks to her and a few other book-on-cd true believers, this small library has a sizable collection. I enjoy going with her to help her find books she might have missed, and to check out the community bulletin boards and Friends of the Library book sale shelves. This library is staffed largely with volunteers. They are generally happy to pause for a moment to help you find what you need, or to help you figure out any issues with your account. I've also asked them for help with local knowledge, and I'm guessing they are a wonderful resource for the families that vacation in the area. The library has a decent selection of children and adult books, as well as movies, audiobooks, and a bank of computers for Internet access. They also have an agreement with the Overdrive system, which gives you the ability to download ebooks directly to your digital device. The best part of a digital loan is that there are no late fees. When your loan period is over the book simply disappears. It's a great system! And all of this is housed in a modern, inviting building. Go visit your local library, and happy reading!

I am In Forest City for a two week trip to visit relatives. I had wifi from a neighbor for the…read morefirst week and all of a sudden, it was gone. I called the library and they have free, secure wireless for anyone. You need not be a resident of the borough nor the county. The Forest City Library is part of the Susquehanna County Library System. It's a small space on Main Street, but there's a nice table with four chairs on a landing above the main floor. The librarian gave me the sheet with the password. She was very polite when I phoned to see if it was available, and she was just as pleasant in person. There is not a large selection of books, but I was surprised by how much was in this relatively small space. A borrower came in and checked out the Hangover DVD. You have to love a library that keeps that DVD in stock. I spent an hour catching up on the outside world. I now have my wifi back from the neighbor who returned from a two day getaway, but I'll stop into the library before I go home and say thanks once again!
