I echo another reviewer - the best three years of my life were spent at this University. With a campus situated right on top of a hill, surrounded by glorious views and countryside, and the other right on the seafront, there's something for everyone in Aber (well, maybe apart from nightclubs that one would find in a city). Yes, the town is small, but it has everything you generally need. Food and drinks are cheap, and the sense of community really does exist here. I could keep going forever, talking about the well-stocked library, fun events at the Union, great political record, fantastic courses and how your fitness levels increase by walking up a 45 degree hill every day! Started in 1944 at the age of 17. Left finally in 1954 - some years as a conscript in the Navy, a year in France as an "assistant", a year on a travelling scholarship. I am still grateful for what the university did for me. It gave me the capacity to earn a good living, wide cultural and intellectual interests and inspired me to think for myself. It enriched my life in ways that were not obvious at the time. There are still one or two of us from that time who keep in touch. Academically, the uni is great, with supportive staff and great content to study. Facilities outside of academia really let this place down. If you're in halls you can expect everything to take an excessive amount of time to fix, as well as moronic rules regarding what you can and cannot bring into halls (too few are reasonable). The WiFi blocks games consoles, there are ways around it, but some of these (such as use of a VPN) will cost you money. The accommodation rules are highly restrictive and infantilise students. As of this year you can also expect a ridiculous laundry system that is unclear and doesn't require coins... so all of that change you usually get rid of in the washing machine is now just change you can't get rid of. It's unnecessary and more of a hindrance than a help. Finally, the disabled facilities here are virtually non-existent. If you are a wheelchair user, this is not the university for you. Both Llanbadarn and Penglais campus are ill equipped for disabled access, this has been illustrated on a number of occasions in my time here and yet only limited improvements have been made. A number of areas are still woefully inaccessible. Also, the mental health services here are utterly ludicrous and after having experienced them first hand I have to question whether the "nurses" have ever received any formal training in the area at all. The waiting list for counselling is ridiculous, two years I stayed on that thing before actually giving up on trying. It's actually a real shame that parts of the uni unrelated to academia make this a horrible institution. The town is lovely and I adore my degree but I am going to be extremely glad to see the back of this university. read more
