Not the best Asian food. Very local feel, great atmosphere but when the food hits your mouth you'll wish you picked somewhere else. Thought I found a diamond in the rough Asian food joint but it was very lackluster. Big menus are never a good sign especially with this one. read more

I used to love coming here, the last time I went left a bad taste in my mouth. The owner made myself and my friends very uncomfortable the entire dinner. He was watching the restaurant as if people were going to walk out and not pay for their meals. They really try and push people in and out as fast as they can with terrible customer service. Some positives the food does seem fresh over all but you get your meal when the food is done. For example we ordered an bao bun appetizer and two entrees to share. Our meal came out 20 minutes before our appetizer. I appreciate that it come out fresh but by the time I got to our appetizer I was full and bao buns don't make good leftovers. read more

This is my go to dim sum place in the KC metro area. The restaurant is small hidden gem. The service is quick and they're friendly. My favorite things from the menu is the su mai, chicken feet, and the walnut prawns. The food always comes out fresh. This place is one of our favorite places to get authentic Chinese food. The restaurant itself is quite small, but the food is a hit. We usually start with their crab meat fish moe soup (in our case, serves 5) and fried intestines as appetizers. Two of our base dishes are the shrimp fried rice and the beef chow fun! Both are flavorful, though beware if you're not a big fan of onions, the chow fun is packed full of it. Our side dishes are usually the salt & pepper fried variations of squid and tofu. They give you white rice as they spare no saltiness in their lightly coated frying batter. We finished off with the mango pudding, which I think has diminished in flavor for me and lacks mango chunks. Overall, we are never disappointed coming to this quaint restaurant off 87th! My sister and I stumbled across this place a couple years ago and we are soooo glad we did. Whenever I fly in to see her this is literally always our first stop after she picks me up from the airport. I've never had a bad dish here. We particularly love the shrimp shumai. ABC cafe is still one of my favorite places to get authentic Chinese food in the area, but it's definitely taken a step back since the first time I went in. Over the last few visits, the portion sizes have been noticeably smaller, while the prices have actually increased. This is usually not the greatest combo for the regular customers. However, I do understand that it has been a tough time for restaurants during the pandemic and I am sure that is one of the main causes. With that being said, the quality of the food is still top notch. You'll have a hard time finding authentic Chinese food as good as what you'll get here in the KC area. When we walked in my husband was the only white person in the restaurant aka this place is legit (where the locals eat). Felt authentic even the space was cramped. We ordered veggie dim sum, shrimp fried wontons and siu mai to start off with - we ended up with veggie spring rolls instead of the dim sum which when we tried to correct our server she was adamant that we ordered the spring rolls so my husband said we'd keep it and asked her to bring add the dim sum order. I do not recommend the spring rolls. Very little vegetables and what you could taste had a weird flavor and then there was batter. Dim sum was flavorful and delicious. Siu mai was a bit on the salty side. Shrimp wontons were perfect. I've been craving good broth and noodles! So I got the wonton noodle soup - delicious! Bokchoy, shrimp wontons and noodles. It was not salty and I could add in more flavor to my liking. Chicken with rice noodles was good as well. Big serving that my husband and I shared. Lots of onions which I love. Impressive classic Chinese food family owned and operated. I love and enjoy this kind of restaurant because I can experience and feel the authenticity. The food is extraordinary and stands out in regards to quality and flavors. Heres what we ordered. First, we started off with starters such as sesame balls, shrimp dim sum, beef roll. Cucumber salad, and for entree, we got shrimp fried rice, ABC chicken, and honey walnut prawns. Sesame balls are sweet with flaky and soft perfect balance in texture and taste. The shrimp dim sum are decent just good. Moreover, the cucumber salad is refreshing but without chilly oil which I expected. My favorite items were the fried rice with shrimp and the honey walnut prawns those are absolutely incredible with outstanding quality and taste. The fried rice is just perfect and well balanced with some veggies, good portion of shrimps and freshly made. The honey walnut prawns are incredibly well balanced not too sweet not too heavy just perfect and marvelous flavor and texture. The beef rolls are a must and incredibly flavored. We went to lunch here the other day,it was very busy so we figured it must be great!! Unfortunately,it was less than stellar. I had pork pot stickers and ABC Chicken(sweet and sour)with jasmine rice and my husband had the fried pork chop and shrimp dumplings. He did not like his shrimp dumplings at all,he said they were bland,but liked the pork chop pieces. My ABC chicken was good,typical sweet and sour chicken,however I didn't like my pot stickers at all,they were filled with ground pork,but no spices or veggies in them at all and were served with soy sauce for dipping. This is a small little cafe-style restaurant off a busy road. It is quite a small cafe, and inside can feel rather packed. I came here to get take out for dimsum, as I was feeling a bit home sick - and most of their dimsum hit the spot! They have a limited dimsum selection, compared to what I was used to from Boston, but for what I was craving I got a few things I wanted. I ended up ordering the lotus leaf wrapped sticky rice (which was well-seasoned and authentically prepared), bbq pork buns (this was the most different item - instead of the fluffy BBQ pork buns I was used to, these were small buns with a smooth surface, so I didn't enjoy this as much), siu mai, egg tart (just like I usually remember!). I will be back here, as the owners and staff are very welcoming and remind me of home - even though their dimsum isn't the best I've had, it still hits the spot. I wish they could expand some dimsum items such as rice rolls, but this is more delicate and can be difficult to prepare! I would like to come back for their stone pot rice, lunch, and dinner entrees which I feel may be quite authentic and I crave good actual Chinese food (rather than your American chop suey and chicken teriyaki/orange chicken)! Update 3/26/21: due to Covid, I opted to order to go and decided I'd try more of their dim sum options for lunch. While looking at the menu I was so surprised to find soup dumplings! I got my usual ha gow (shrimp) and siu mai (pork) and added the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) and was NOT disappointed. So good! They looked like they spaced tables out better so I'd definitely feel comfortable dining in if I'm in the area. Also still love their chicken and salted fish fried rice! Definitely my comfort food. What's better than a good brunch? Hmmm maybe delicious dim sum. Went on a Sunday afternoon to try Abc Cafe. My friend described it as "the best Chinese restaurant in KC", and I can see why. This dim sum isn't the traditional scene of waiters pushing around carts with different dishes: it's all a la carte. The venue is also very small (maybe 7-8 tables in the whole joint). I tried the shrimp dumplings, egg custard. & coconut steam buns, spicy shrimp dumplings in chili sauce, beef short ribs, and Chinese broccoli (which was not on the dim sum menu). I really enjoyed the steam bun because it had a subtle coconut flavor. The Chinese broccoli was really garlicky (just the way I like it ). Got a kettle of jasmine green tea as well, which is a great pallet cleanser. Overall: amazing. Just make sure you go early or off times because it gets PACKED. read more

I've been to ABC Cafe several times and have always had a good experience, not sure why I've never left a review. This is the best Dim Sum I've had and the prices are unbelievable! A group of 5 could easily eat and be full for $80 and that's going to be a lot of food. My favorites are the bbq pork bun, shrimp chili wontons, and salt and pepper squid (which is an entree). My son loves the sticky rice in lotus leaf, he could eat both easily. The bbq pork is so good, very tender almost melts in your mouth. I tried the Beef chow fun today which are wide noodles with nice size pieces of beef. The noodles were so flavorful and that was the most tender beef I've had in a Chinese dish. I believe this restaurant is racist I purchased over $60 worth of food to go. While waiting I watched others being served & the food looked good. Took the food home & all the food was rotten, They served me rotten food ! lived too faraway to return the food but I have never forgotten It! I only went to this restaurant because it had the same namesake as of The ABC Cafe in Los Angeles CA & the food there is great!
