There are two parts to Abbot House, the building itself and the cafe. The building is really lovely and has a mediocre museum you can take a tour round and see. The cafe leaves a lot to be desired. There are several rooms you can sit in, or if weather permits, there is a lovely little garden outside. The pricey menu has all the usual things you expect to find in a cafe, but some things are best left alone. The scones were rock hard, flat and dry, just don't expect cream, they don't have any. The cakes were uncovered last time I went in. Pass. Expect to wait a while if they are busy. Oh, and if you don't like screaming kids, give it a miss, mothers love nothing more than letting their brats scream the house down, while leaving a big mess. Staffed by old lady volunteers, some smile, some don't, some who are efficient at what they do, some who are there to plod along at their own pace. If you are waiting for your coffee at the counter, cover your ears, some staff don't know how to heat the milk without the machine making high pitched, ear piercing squeals. Unfortunately, there is a lot going on behind the scenes at this place, the staff and committee will probably run this place into the ground because they do not listen to criticism from staff and customers. read more
