The lobby is tiny but check in was quite fast. Similar to other European hotels that converted old buildings, getting to the rooms can be a bit odd. Our "300" level rooms were accessed by taking the elevator to second floor and going down a hall which took us down a few steps and then up another few steps. While a bit of a challenge with luggage, it wasn't insurmountable. The room was chic with a modern bathroom. The bed was comfortable. The best part of the stay though was dinner at the restaurant. They have an extensive wine and drink menu. They served bread with flavored butter to the table. There were two types of bread, one that was like a country loaf and one that reminded me of focaccia served with a pesto butter. They were small but delicious bites. For my main course I had the Slow Braised Hereford Irish Beef Featherblade which comes with sweet potato puree, sweet corn, green beans & smoked bacon, red pepper polenta, fried corn crumb and jus. This was an amazing meal. The succulent beef was slow cooked before being crisped for serving. This gave the exterior some caramelization which contrasted nicely with the tenderness from the slow braise. The sweet corn & green beans provided the same kind of textural and flavor contrast to the sweet potato puree. And the polenta was savory and warm. Everything was a dance of complimentary contrasts. I only spent one night in Kilkenny but wish I had spent more just to enjoy more of the Zuni's excellent food. If you're looking for a place to stay, put Zuni on your list. If you're looking for a place to dine, Zuni is a must visit!

When we approached the hotel, we realized that it was centrally located and very nice without being overly fancy or too expensive. After our Castle tour, we returned to the hotel to check in and again (in Kilkenny) the staff was very friendly and helpful.  Our room was facing the side street and was overall very clean and nice. It was on the 1st floor but in the states, it would be considered the 2nd floor as the actual first floor is called the "ground floor". This meant unfortunately when people were seated below us at the restaurant patio outside, sometimes their cigarette smoke would waft into our room. It wasn't so bad but the street noise was problematic... Even though we went to bed after 10pm and we only stayed one night on a Sunday night, the music from the Left Bank was so loud that we had trouble sleeping, even after closing the windows. Had it not been for these two aspects, we would have really loved the hotel room and found that it was clean and comfortable. We had some bottled (non-plastic) waters in the room, and iron, hair dryer, comfortable beds, etc.  The hotel bar (The Brasserie) was also advertising live music, so we checked that out too. It was very nice inside but the music wasn't quite loud enough for us to fully enjoy so we called it quits after a round of drinks. For more recommendations and tips from our Ireland trip... If the place has very good value, is central and I got my stay in a deal's website I wasn't expecting to find a Sheraton neither a cheap and smelly hostel, and this hotel has a good balance. So as mentioned brilliant location: 1 minute from the main bus stop to and from Dublin (perfect), good sized room with kettle, good food in the restaurant downstairs, okay food in the breakfast tea room, accommodating staff (they let me leave my backpack in the reception for a few hours before my bus), clean premises and the wi-fi works well in the room not only in the lobby like in some cheaper hotels...also nice wooden style bar and restaurant downstairs with a few older locals having a pint; good selection of grub too. Of course dated decor but some interesting medieval drawings and wall paper in the room, very small toilet and extremely hot shower (there was no lukewarm there), tasteless hot chocolate in breakfast but brewed coffee, unlimited bread, choice of scrambled eggs, fish, full Irish or a small cheese board (more options available than what I was expecting!). When I booked the lady on the phone was very rude but there were several members of the staff and everyone was lovely while I was there.
