Cosy little Cinema in the center of the Jewish quarter in Hamburg. They alsways have a very fine selection of movies which is between mainstream and arthouse but generally more towards arthouse. They also offer all English movies with German subtitles as well as in dubbed versions. The prices as very fair and they even have student discount. Als their slection beverages and snacks is very good and bit pricey but nothing to special but very solid, they have a restaurant next door which is not directly connected to the cinema. The Abaton is always a safe bet because you know what to expect. Nothing overly fancy and nothing too pretentious. Staff - most probably students from the nearby university - has been friendly and welcoming to this date. They often have some nice specials on -- if not, I like the Pizza Pescatore as an all time favourite. Their terrace is great! read more

One of the last small quaint cinemas in Hamburg. They show movies in the original language - with and without subtitles - English and other languages. German films as well. They have sweet and salty popcorn and you can mix it too which I love. They don't have seat reservations so the earlier you come the better if you want a certain seat in the theater. What a great place... First off there are free seat choices and a great bar to hang around before the matinee. I enjoy watching movies here for two simple reasons: they show movies in their original languages and the people are always very engaged and have wit. I just came back from watching Dallas buyers club and compared to the big cinemas like Cinemaxx abatons people are very involved and expressive - I enjoy that. Inspiring little place! An update to my review: I added another star because THEY HAVE POPCORN NOW. Not just that, but one can choose between salty and sweet (or mixed - as I do ;)). It's perfect now. read more

The Abaton is a decent little cinema near Hamburg university. As I see it, it has two main things going for it: 1) They show some English language films (albeit with German subtitles) 2) It's next door to Pony Bar, which is pretty cool That being said, the screen (is there more than one?) is pretty small, and the emergency lights are annoyingly bright - so much so that if you're sat in the wrong place it's like someone shining a torch at you! read more

I dont like the abaton kino! For me its not easily accessible. I am kinda lazy and anything not accessible by bahn is not worth it... of course you can walk from the bahn station or take a bus but the few times i was there i got lost on my way back and forth from the abaton :P so i stick to Streit's kino which also has english movies and a bigger theater and screen... I think in the abaton there are different theaters, probably 3. but they are all relatively small... but then again its in the grindel area, surrounded by cafes and bars thats why it gets 3 stars! read more

A lovely little kino with its own character and charm. tends to show more arty movies than mainstream and has it's own restaurant next door. Plenty of bars and restaurants nearby too for that pre or post film drink. Recently voted best cinema in Europe. read more

One of Hamburg's offbeat cinema's which shows occasionally English films. Normally they have a film set that sticks for a week or two so if you want variation then this isn't really the place for you. First off book your tickets in advance. But isn't that the case with all cinema's? There is only one ticket booth so queue's can appear quickly. Inside you a greeted with a cosy waiting area where you can grab your snacks'n'drinks. It's a bit kiosk like so don't expect your standard cinema stuff. For example if you want a coke then it's a nice little glass bottle you get. Inside the cinema there are comfy seats and the cinema setup is respectable enough. So conclusion, it's a pretty ok cinema. For those English people feeling fatally wounded by the closure of Grindel then perhaps this cinema can help a little. But don't expect the blockbusters! Oh and don't get totally shocked by the snacks'n'drinks. read more

The Abaton is always like a journey back in the time when cinemas where more of a hideout than an efficient franchise business in entertainment. If Cinemaxx is Starbucks, the Abaton is that neat little family-run cafe house at the corner which makes those delicous homemade pies that change by week and season. What makes the Abaton so special and enjoyable? It is one of the few places in Hamburg that allows you to watch a good variety of non-dubbed (englich movies usually come with subtitles) movies. It shows plenty of independent movies and almost all of the big budget movies they show have some art house twist to them. They regularly have special events where actors, directors and producers join screenings for discussions and insights. I have been to a couple of them and enjoyed them all The seats are cozy, the staff is nice, it is hardly ever tremendously packed. Who will enjoy it? If you loved Transformers 3 or Avatar including the 3d Goggles, the Abaton is not the right place. But if you have a picture of David Lynch in your wallet, the abaton will be the best cinema in Hamburg for you. read more
