    B&ML RailCyclers

I saw an article about RailCycling, and we thought we'd give it a try. We were not disappointed! So what are RailCycles? Think of a tandem recumbent bike, that runs on train tracks. We started at a historic train station in Unity (unfortunately, we were there too early to partake of the ice cream shop that was housed in one of the buildings, but we did browse a soap shop). Check out the tiny museum, which doubles as a rudimentary gift shop. We then sat down on our Cycle. They are somewhat adjustable for height, but not completely. I'm short (5' tall), and the closest I could get to the pedals had me reaching, because of the placement of the brake cable. When I tried one of the others, the closer setting was too close (maybe sized for a child). My seat also seeped water (though it hadn't rained for days), and I ended up with a very wet butt. The seats also aren't very wide, so take that into account. Once we got started, it was a lot of fun - one major roadway across which Logan stopped traffic so we could cross, followed by a stretch of track that traversed the woods with their beautiful fall colors, then hugged past Unity Pond, through a swampy area (where we were treated to three lovely herons flying past), and across a railroad bridge before stopping to turn around and head back. All the while we pedaled steadily, getting exercise as well as a fun ride through the woods. When we did reach that halfway point, I was disappointed - it all goes by so quickly! The entire trip takes an hour or so. It's not a difficult pedal, though there are some slight grades (remember, these are train tracks, and trains don't do well going up and down hills). I think that if the group (there were five couples, including us) were having trouble keeping up, our guide would have slowed down to accommodate us. But if you're looking for a strenuous workout, you won't find it here. We enjoyed the ride, spent some time together laughing, talking and taking in the scenery - great activity for a beautiful autumn day in Maine. Longer would have been better for us, but Logan did say that a longer ride is planned for October!

This past weekend I had the pleasure of visiting Portland, Maine. Aside from some amazing lobstah…read morerolls, what else might you expect out of a historic, coastal New England town? You guessed it.....ghosts. Maine has always fascinated me, ever since I read "Pet Sematary" when I was about 12 years old. In fact, the 1989 version of the movie was just on television. Perhaps no one tackled the Maine accent as well as Fred Gwynn. Ayuh, he nailed his role as the old, weathered, local Maine neighbor, Jud Crandall. (John Lithgow provided a completely different interpretation of Jud in the 2019 version.) It's only appropriate that King, who grew up in Portland, based so many of his novels in the state of Maine. This place is saturated with ghosts, savory characters, and somewhat of a dark history. Last week on my layover I took a Wicked Walking Tour with Gordon, who was absolutely fantastic. Knowledgeable and funny, his theatrical, yet historic tour was well worth my time. Gordon made the tour interactive and got to know each of us on the tour. There was another Lori (spelled differently though), another couple from Cleveland, and some newlyweds amongst our group. We started by learning about some history of the city. Portland buried their dead 18 feet under. Gordon informed us this was to keep the vampires in and the grave robbers out. The Portland Waterfront and the many islands of Casco Bay have stories of pirates, witches, ghosts, fires, and abandoned ships that we learned of throughout the tour. In this particular part of the waterfront a mysterious woman clad in black wanders the dock area, stumbling over lobster traps in search of her sailor. Aside from an occasional wharf rat, there is not much trace of life down here at night. A building that I noticed while walking around the town was the Time and Temperature Building, a building with....you guessed it: the time and temperature displayed on the outside. Gordon talked about this building on our tour. The place is allegedly haunted by a female ghost with fire-engine red hair, who enjoys riding the elevators and who will often play on them, randomly sending them to different floors. Some workers in the building have claimed to have seen an unknown female walking through their offices, and when they follow her or try speaking to her, she vanishes around a corner. Electricians insist that there is nothing wrong with the wiring of the elevators. No one is certain of the back-story here, nor why she does this. Before running through a dark and sinister alley, Gordon pointed out an other creepy building. I don't remember the details, but I remember something about a woman seeing a mermaid, attached to the front of a ship outside her third story window. Apparently the water level used to reach this part of the town and there have been phantom ships, still weathering the storms, to this day. Check out Gordan's tour......I really enjoyed it. His stories are interesting and engaging. Maine is awesome. And the people here are wicked smaht.....

Jocelyn's food is amazing, and she takes good care of me an my food allergies. The crew is amazing and friendly, and you can't beat the sea air. We just competed our third trip in 2 years and will be back aboard again in a month! ---- The cabins are what you would expect on a 100+ year old sailing vessel, but if you're reading this, you're already someone who will likely appreciate the authenticity of the experience over the luxury of the big "floating hotel" cruise ships. Captains Justin and Jocelyn couldn't be nicer, Jocelyn and her kitchen helpers put on some amazing meals given that they're all cooked on a wood stove and with minimal room to move around! Honestly, if you are the sort of person to whom this sort of adventure appeals, this is the ship for you. It's obviously not for everyone, and that's okay. But 5/5 stars for whose of us to whom it appeals!

We couldn't get over how incredible the food was, our favorites were the salmon, halibut, clam chowder, whiskey pork chops and of course the lobster bake! The steak that accompanied the lobster was just as good, if not better. Breakfasts of eggs Benedict, crab Benedict, and homemade cinnamon rolls, biscuits, shortbread, and bagels were amazing. Can't even begin to understand how difficult it must be to cook this level of quality food, for almost 30 people, on an antique wood burning stove. Hoping Jocelyn will publish a cookbook, even if it doesn't have the temperature and cook time info, I'm happy to play around with that on my own. We were blessed with great weather and really enjoyed the scenery, stars, and meteor shower. We saw seals, eagles, lobster boats, and were able to use the paddle board and rowboat. The water was cold but refreshing. My husband really enjoyed being able to help out with raising the anchor and sails, and we learned so much on our voyage. Between the crew and the guests, we met so many wonderful people from various backgrounds/demographics, and enjoyed all of our conversations. In regards to the other reviews about the cabins, bathrooms, dishes, I'm guessing those folks didn't read or research before signing up, keep in mind that this is an almost 100 year old schooner, and for the most part you're going to feel like you've stepped back in time, which is kind of the whole point. For us, it was nice to be able to disconnect from technology and all the modern-day conveniences that were so used to. Bring a book, game, journal, or craft to occupy your time. It was nice to not have to dry and style my hair or to worry about makeup. The cabins are small but we slept incredibly well. Bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper, my husband used breathe-right strips to help with snoring. We used extra large body wipes in lieu of the shower, and hats are a must. We brought bar soap -it was great to use in the sink in our cabin to wash hands, since hand sanitizer only goes so far, especially when you're applying sunscreen. They now have flush toilets that work really well, and we never had to wait in line to use them. As for the dishes, our travel companions did a good job of wiping everything off with their napkins first, and we had no issues with the warm soapy water. We had a great time and hope to be able to go again soon!

The tent & cabin were both very clean & comfortable. The campground community bath house (when staying in a tent or cabin w/out bathroom) was also kept clean. The cabins could use a bit more privacy - all the huge, gorgeous, picturesque windows are problematic as (particularly in the winter) there's several other cabins w/full view into your windows. It would be nice if it was more of a private / woods view than looking into other cabins. That said, my daughter & I enjoyed our time and have been repeat customers. Would give it 4.5 stars (Yelp doesn't give half star option, but I needed to account for the lack of privacy in several of the cabins in the area we were in.). Overall a great option & we'll likely be back!

It's a little hidden wonder that offer families things to do. My kids (4 and 13) were fully immersed in the experience. The oldest was keeping the youngest involved in the scavenger hunt which he loved looking for the 'red' guy. The hands on portions fully captivated them. I was worried the walking might be a lot for the little guy but he didn't complain not once. It was explorative and interesting. Keep in mind, on hot days I bet you feel it! Bring sunblock, wear hats, closed toed shoes are best and water. Also, the big blue slide in the rear of the desert shoots little ones out like a cannon! I thought he broke his arm but he was ok! You've been warned.

I was exhausted and angry, and my son slept poorly on a lumpy sofa bed with no sheets. Fortunately, the next day, the young man in charge was very kind and removed the $20 "late check in fee", reduced the price of our stay and got us our sheets. My rating of this place went from 1 to 3 stars based on responsiveness. Bottom line: dates decor, stained carpeting, fridge that doesn't work. Clean sheets, some friendly people, and a cheap place to stay the night. Not perfect, but what do you want for cheap?

This truly is an amazing adventure, don't hesitate. BOOK THE EXCURSION!…read more ** Cash or check only! I've been vacationing in Northern Maine for 37 years, and we just recently started venturing out to Southern Maine. I came across Cabbage Island Clam Bake via social media late last year. I finally made a point to visit this year. Booking online was very easy. I booked our trip back in December. No payment needed. You pay upon arrival on the day of your trip. Book in advance if possible. They will fill up fast. They cater to special events as well, so reachout if you need to book something. There are a few things to choose from for meals, even for children, incase lobster is not your thing, or maybe you simply are lobstered out and want to have an experience. Communication was fantastic as the date grew closer. We received email confirmation back in December, but June into July it ramped up with maybe an email here or a text to confirm 1-3 times. We did change one of our meals from the chicken to lobster with a simple phone call a few weeks in advance. They were very accommodating and pleasant. We received email confirmation when that was complete. Their website is filled with lots of information. I also watched a few videos via social media to get a feel for what to expect. The day came for our CICB! We went on 7/5/25, afternoon excursion. We arrived a little before 11:30am, checked in and paid an estimated $97 per person. Price will vary. The website has that broken down for you. We waited behind the ticket booth in the shade. When boarding came we were one of the last to board. Once onboard the Benie Alice we were greeted by many of the crew. You could opt to pay for some drinks on board. Bring a sweater, even if it's hot outside Maine summers can be on the cooler side. The bottom level was cold for many as windows were open, and the water air was filling in. The upper deck was warmer, but the seating is limited to about 99 passengers. The front of the boat outside definitely is cold due to the air coming at you when it is moving. The back of the boat is the warmest and most comfortable I found for myself. When we arrived we found seating at an outdoor picnic table in the Hideaway section. It was so nice and secluded! Good to restore any sensory overload we all had. There are many picnic tables around, an indoor seating area, restrooms, bar, kitchen, and small gift shop. Once we were seated our waiter Will came and introduced himself. He also took our drink order. Tea(hot or iced), coffee, and water are apart of your meal. There are sodas and mixed drinks for sale paid via cash. Will brought out the fish chowder. It was FANTASTIC! So good. I added a little salt and pepper, others kept it the way it came. I ventured to check out the lobster being cooked along with all the other fixings. It honestly was so fascinating watching all the hard work that was going into preparing the food. They clearly have this all down to a science and work like a well oiled machine. So many of staff/family took time to chat with guests. Everyone was so nice! A bell went off and we headed to get our food. The line moved pretty quick. On a tray we had 2 lobsters, clams, a potato, melted butter, an onion corn on the cob and an egg. Everyone was superb! We finished with coffee and their famous blueberry cake. The cake was moist, houses many blueberries and had a small crunch on the top. It was a decent size piece as well! This entire experience was wonderful! It's in my list to return if I'm in the area! I'll be recommending it so many! TIP THE STAFF. Jars are on the picnic table. THANK YOU MOORE FAMILY and CREW! You all did an amazing job from day one! Can I be adopted... hehe. Have a wonderful rest of the season.

What an amazing experience! Highly highly recommend and would come back again!…read more This is a family run business operating for 37 years. This is not just a meal, it's an excursion with a boat tour. The clam bake is on a private island owned by the family. Family members walk around and greet you on the island. Betty is one of the sisters. She is 73. Her son cooks lobsters. A nephew was collecting tickets. Some are servers. The pride and love shows. I walked over to see the area where the lobsters and clams were steaming and someone was explaining the process to one of the customers. We were blessed with beautiful weather, so to be fair I think it would not be as enjoyable if it was too hot, cold or rainy. Don't miss out on this epic experience.
