I trusted HomeStars to connect me with reliable professionals, but this experience has been deeply disappointing. 1. Home Roof Repair Agreement * Riley initially inspected my roof and insisted that a full replacement was urgent during the rainy season. * I decided to postpone the roof work, as opening the entire roof during heavy rain was unreasonable. * A second opinion later revealed that only minor repairs were necessary. 2. Business Renovation Agreement * I hired Riley for renovation work at my business for an agreed total of $3,150 (including tax) on November 12th. He promised the work would take 3 days. * As of December 14th, the work remains incomplete. * Riley claimed there would be at most $1,000 in extra costs, but I ended up paying approximately $2,300 in additional expenses. 3. Sink Damage and Misuse of Space * During the business renovation, Riley dropped and broke the washroom sink, blaming a previous contractor. However, the sink had been functional for 4 years. * Riley had been storing his tools and equipment in the washroom, which likely caused the damage. 4. Additional Signage Work * I assigned him a separate task to move a sign, which he completed, for $1,050 (paid in cash). 5. Ceiling Repair at My Home * Riley convinced me to fix a ceiling leak caused by the roof, claiming the issue was urgent and would cost me $400-$500 if delayed. * We agreed on $5,000 for ceiling repairs, office and suite tiles, and other minor work. He requested a $2,000 deposit, which I paid. * Despite this, he: * Arrived late and worked for only 1 hour, tearing up the office carpet and leaving items chaotically at the entrance. * Promised to finish the work in 1 week, but nothing has been completed. * Removed carpets and items from the lower suite without permission and left my refrigerator outside in the rain. * Took the suite keys without authorization. 6. Oven Relocation Failure * Riley assured me he could relocate my oven for $5,500, including equipment rental, and guaranteed the job would be done in 1 day. * I informed him of a health inspection scheduled for December 12th, which he guaranteed would not be a problem. * On December 11th, Riley caused a fire at my restaurant. * The previous day, he failed to turn on the oven, causing me to open late, resulting in sales of only $300 instead of $2,500. * On December 12th, the oven was again left off, forcing me to relocate operations to another restaurant. This caused order cancellations and further disruptions. 7. Unprofessional and Unauthorized Behavior * I found Riley sleeping inside my restaurant without permission. * He left the restaurant door open and unattended, which I was informed about by a Rogers technician. * Riley used my supplier credit card without authorization for purchases. 8. Financial and Operational Losses * The total agreed cost for the oven relocation was $5,500, yet Riley took $4,000 and failed to deliver. * At my home, he took a $2,000 deposit but left the property in a state of ruin. * His actions have caused: * Financial losses from disrupted operations. * Property damage at both my home and business. * Emotional stress and operational setbacks. Conclusion I hired Riley through HomeStars, trusting that he was a vetted professional. Instead, his conduct has been unprofessional, erratic, and damaging, with broken promises, incomplete work, and unauthorized actions.
