Absolutely gorge venue. The vibe was "magical" as the word that kept coming to mind being there. Normally would rate a 5 however was somewhat confused on the meal situation. They were extremely strict on what/how much you could have. Not a terribly lot of food and once the last table was called to eat, the staff immediately closed the doors to the food area. Ruined Our Wedding!! My wife and I got married on September 28, 2024, and we wish we had taken our money elsewhere. Russ will sweet talk you into choosing this place. Yes, it's nice and can be breathtaking, but the problem lies within the customer service on the day of the wedding. We had family and friends come from out of town to attend our wedding, some of whom had never been to Kansas City before, which made us feel very special. The night before the wedding, Russ called and informed my wife that we were over our guest list limit and needed to make an additional list of the people we really wanted to attend. My wife was up all night crying out of frustration because this was very last minute, and some people were going to be upset. The wedding day was a horrible experience! First, Russ's assistant (whose name I can't remember) was the worst! She's black. I believe she's racist against her own kind. She stirred up trouble the whole time, accusing the wedding party of smoking weed on the property. Keep in mind, weed is 100% legal, and if someone smoked it before arriving, it's their business. Second, there were no lights in the groomsmen's section due to a storm prior. When we asked if we could get a light to shave or whatever, Russ's assistant was very rude and even got mouthy with my groomsman, who showed her nothing but respect by saying "Ma'am" and "Please." Even after she was done chewing out my groomsmen over the light, she walked away, then turned back to finish chewing us out, informing us that certain things "were not her job." Her attitude eventually rubbed off on Russ, and he started talking to me like I was just a thug off the street, despite the fact that I had paid over $10k for this venue. Third, they started trying to do crowd control with our guest list by refusing to let our family and friends in. Some had traveled from out of state and could not get in because Russ's assistant didn't use the list we stayed up all night creating. Instead, she passed the list to our daughter (who doesn't work for the company and wasn't present) to retype, which resulted in a number of people being removed. They let all the older people in (50+) and told anyone who looked young that they weren't on the list, even though they were. Then there were the pictures. It took about 45 minutes to get the lights working outside for our pictures. Because they didn't let our younger family members in, a lot of older people had left before the reception even began, leaving us with a semi-empty room. My only wedding! My lifetime memory ruined by poor customer service and micromanagement. DO NOT USE THEM!! PLEASE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!! read more

My daughter and her new husband had their wedding at A Secret Garden. The experience was not all positive. Here are the pros and cons to be carefully considered before booking this venue. TL;DR The owner is extremely difficult and controlling, but the space is beautiful. Book with caution. PROs The venue's garden setting and indoor event space were beautiful. It was the perfect vibe for my daughter and son-in-law. The bridal suite for the bride and bridesmaids was wonderful - spacious and comfortable. The groom's space was adequate (no sink or bathroom, much smaller). The owner, Russ, created pretty and memorable bouquets for the bride, bridesmaids and family. All of the flowers were truly unique and breathtaking. Russ was supportive and nice to the bride. She was very easygoing, so she could handle his controlling style. Having a cocktail hour in the garden before the ceremony was a great way for guests to arrive at various times and enjoy time together before sitting down for the ceremony. The mini lights, pathways, and greenery were just right. We loved the caterer the venue recommended. Many guests commented on the delicious food. The bartending vendor they suggested also did a good job. The wedding couple loved working with the photographer, Bailey. CONs The numerous rules and "traditions" of the venue were random and annoying. And they wouldn't budge on these. For example, they refused entry for the groom and all of his attendants for 20 minutes because it "wasn't time for them yet" - conveniently glossing over the fact that the timeline for the day was never provided. This forced the groom and his attendants to be late to pictures as they had planned on getting ready at the venue, not lectured like children. Russ and his employees held firm to the secret agenda and venue regulations and acted affronted when we, the paying customers, questioned them. The owner, Russ, likes to be the center of attention. He insisted on welcoming everyone to the venue before the ceremony started and on speaking at the end of the ceremony. It was unnecessary, intrusive and disrupted the flow. He interrupted the lovely live music during the recessional after he missed his cue. He emceed a 30-minute dance contest/bouquet giveaway at the reception, which also felt like The Russ Show. Both of my sisters asked, "What's the deal with that guy?" Russ was rude to our ceremony musicians when they wanted to visit the space before the wedding day. He promised a sound system that wasn't adequate, so luckily we invited the musicians to the rehearsal, where they discovered they would need to bring their own. He was impolite to the officiant and downplayed her important role. He repeatedly told us how late he stayed up and how hard he worked. He also liked to tell us how much various parts of the venue cost. We're the customers. We're paying for a service. We don't need this information. This venue is very bride-centric. Weddings as a whole tend to be skewed more towards brides, but this was next level. The groom attempted to liaise with certain vendors (a decent chunk of which were non-negotiable), and they would refuse all correspondence from anyone other than the bride. During planning meetings, Russ would go out of his way to sideline the groom, focusing solely on what the bride had to say, and sometimes even talked about the groom as if he wasn't in the room. As a whole, the experience (minus the day of the wedding) made the groom feel like nothing more than a guest in his own ceremony planning. Russ was uncivil to me as the mother of the bride. He dismissed my questions and repeatedly "put me in my place" before and during the wedding although my daughter had told him that I was her co-planner and that she wanted and respected my input. He had a way of being super harsh, then sometimes trying to walk it back with a joke that fell flat. Booking this venue means putting up with Russ' abrasive, overbearing, and unprofessional behavior. read more

I recently had my wedding here (9-13-2020) and oh my goodness I cannot say enough about this place, honestly 5 stars is not enough! First the decor for my wedding and reception was beyond anything I could have imagined! It was so beautiful and fit my Cinderella theme perfectly. Many of my guests were in awe and told me they have never seen a more beautiful wedding and venue! One of the best parts is it was all done for me, all I had to do was discuss my theme! He handles and designs all of the floral for the wedding including bouquets, corsages, even the flowers for the flower girl!!! Everything was included in my price, and I did not need to bring anything or purchase anything extra! Second I HIGHLY recommend using all of the vendors that the Owner of A Secret Garden recommends. We used the recommended photographer, caterer, and DJ. Not only are these people absolutely incredible in what they do, beyond professional, but the ALL work so amazing together creating such a smooth day! Third, the owner Russ is the absolute best! First of all, Russ (the owner and day-of coordinator) is soooo amazing. He loves what he does and it's evident. He is authentic and offers the kind of experience where you feel like you're a member of his family. He's welcoming and accepting and he really is like family after our day was over. I've seen reviews where people spoke negatively about him and they must have been people that can never be satisfied because not a single person involved in or invited to the wedding had anything bad to say. He's also such a sweet, funny, and entertaining officiant. Second, JUST LOOK AT HOW GORGEOUS THESE PICTURES ARE!! The whole wedding was stunning. Like I literally was stunned to the point of speechlessness which is not at all common for me. His vision for the whole thing was spot on for what was discussed and what we wanted. He made the effort to ask BOTH me and my husband about what we wanted out fo the reception and what kind of event we had in mind and he made it happen in ways I never even thought about. The details on the table settings, the votives, the flowers, the attentiveness to making sure my husband and I enjoyed the day and could remember and ENJOY every second was so fantastic. If we needed something, he made it happen. And he's always up for a new challenge. Finally, I didn't want to be a bride that had a lot of responsibility. I wanted to enjoy the day and not have to be stressed about making hundreds of place settings or center pieces l. I didn't want to be the kind of person that had to plot out every single teeny tiny details, but I still wanted those details to be there and I wanted to have a minimal amount of stuff left over to get rid of post-wedding and that's what makes A Secret Garden so awesome--the cost for what's included is UNMATCHED. If we had done something like this elsewhere, we would have only gotten a venue for what we paid. But here, they throw in all the flowers (and then donate anything left to nursing homes afterwards so there's less waste) and then make all the floral arrangements for the wedding out of hand-painted paper so you can keep it forever! Russ acts as the officiate and throws that in, the set up and tear down is included, and you get a first kiss complete with fireworks! Also, there's something for everyone! It's dog friendly which was important to us because my dog is like a son to me and we wanted him there. Then there's the movie theater he includes for the kids, and his coordination is also thrown in for the cost. His recommendations for vendors were all fantastic and we were told by almost everyone that it was the most beautiful wedding they'd ever been to. He also makes it a priority for the bride and groom and those most important to them get their special moments. He even went as far as to surprise my husband and myself with sweet stories playing over the music while we danced with our parents that resulted in not a dry eye in the house. My day was perfect and for anyone else that wants it, Russ at a A Secret Garden WILL deliver on that. read more

I was very excited to get married in a secret garden. But, after all is said and done? I feel there are better options out there. The garden and reception hall IS GORGEOUS, but that's about all they have going for them. My husband and I were promised a personal experience, with very detailed decor, specified to my liking. But, we were over promised and under delivered. I didn't get the personal experience I was hoping for. Instead, I got a tired team of wedding planners and photographers because they over book themselves and leave no time to really personalize anything. And since I was the last wedding of the weekend...well you can imagine the rest. Very unprofessional. Russ and Rachel both looked annoyed with my wedding party through most of the pictures. All of the pictures of bridal party were the same. When we FINALLY actually received our wedding pictures, which was over 4 months after our wedding, they were AWFUL. Unedited, and SO MANY of my pictures were missing- including my husband and I walking into our reception. THERE IS EVEN A PICTURE I RECEIVED THAT HAD MY LITTLE SISTER IN THE BACKGROUND IN HER UNDERWEAR, GETTING DRESSED. That was in my "edited" pictures. When I voiced my concerns, I was "educated" on the difference between "photo manipulation" and "color retouching". And I was told that retouched pictures were not agreed upon- completely false according to my contract. The pictures of us kissing and fireworks going off? Mostly smoke. But, I've seen other daytime weddings and their fireworks were vibrant and smoke barely visible. Must have been edited. (Must be nice) My tan lines are too visible to have been "color retouched" and the detail in my dress was all washed out. Looking at these pictures, it suddenly made sense why I had looked eagerly on their Facebook page for months looking for the shout outs he gave and sneak pics of weddings he did for brides; and never once saw a post for my husband and I's wedding day. I wouldn't want the pictures I was given to advertise for me either. After discussion and AN ADDITIONAL WEEK of waiting, with no urgency on their part, I FINALLY received my pictures; although I am certain I'm still missing some. Some pictures are pretty, but will need to be edited. And most of them look as tho I had paparazzi. They did not pay attention to the background nor detail in pictures. Like I said, they were over weddings by the time my wedding (their 3rd in 3 days) rolled around. I only have 2 pictures of my Father-in-Law and myself; both of which his eyes are closed in. (I understand they can't open his eyes, but really? only 2 pictures?) And Russ was in SO MANY of my pictures, some with him creepily looking on. I don't know about you, but after the experience I had especially, I wasn't expecting nor wanting pictures of him. I also have pictures of us at the altar; you can't see him putting my ring on- but you can see the butts of all my guests.....again no attention to the background. I've not seen wedding pictures so unprofessionally handled. I have had several PROFESSIONAL photographers who've looked at my album and offered to edit them for free out of sympathy and just shake their heads at the quality of the photos. They kept us away from our guests for an HOUR taking pictures (that we still don't have all of) to the point of me not getting to do a bouquet toss or garter toss, or dollar dance to help with the honeymoon or dance with my father-in-law, because by the time I was able to go to my guests; they had to leave! When I voiced I was upset, Rachel told me I should view this as a valuable time to take pictures while my guests were "occupied". After speaking with my guests- turns out they weren't even given a refreshment or allowed to have a drink of the alcohol WE HAD PURCHASED FOR THEM, until they were told they could. It was like being in a daycare. So many rules, and my guests all felt the same. . Whose wedding was it anyway? Mine or theirs? My guests said they were happy I'm married and that the garden was beautiful- but the staff was unprofessional and bossy. There is so much more to be said, but I no longer have the energy to deal with it. Brides, choose wisely; and if you choose this venue- be prepared to have a list of rules to follow (including when you can and can't call him because he does so many weddings, and even if his photographer tells you to call him, he will condescendingly ask you what day it is and treat you like a child out of line); and little to no communication unless you are persistent. I mean, I had to ASK for my wedding pictures and when I did she said she could meet with me the next day! WHAT?! I've waited 4 months for these and they weren't even going to tell me they were done. Had I not contacted them I would probably STILL be without pictures. And then to receive what I did? SMH. I cried and cried, and then felt angry I had WASTED time and money on this venue. About $6 Grand, all said and done. I wouldn't recommend. read more

The venue is absolutely beautiful but the owner Russ was the most unprofessional adult I've ever met. My aunt was informed she would be able to have her own caterer and after signing the contract he changed his mind saying he never said that. Days before the wedding he informed us the rehearsals was moved not explaining why. We show up for rehearsals and it wasn't prepared my aunt was the one telling everyone what to do and better yet Russ was no where to be found that day. Saturday comes and the staff who was there Thursday told us the whole bridal party needs to be there at 2pm so we can get ready with the bride. We show up at 2pm only to find out there's only one working outlet and no mirrors. Russ comes in and starts yelling at my cousin cause she brought a drink in but she wasn't informed that no drinks or food was allowed in. On top of that he was calling my Aunt Renee names the whole day such as "lamb chop", making fun of and yelling at her and the bride saying we need to hurry up and all of us should of been ready before we even got there even though that's not what he said in the beginning. Russ also kept coming in when everyone was getting dressed and yelling each time making it so uncomfortable. Later that day when we were in the reception area the bartender was so disrespectful towards the guest rushing everyone along and was still getting tips from people. With it being covid they had a bowl on limes with no utensils to use and had to be grabbed by hand. After the wedding we found out that he had moved rehearsals to host an event Friday night using all the decorations and decor that MY AUNT paid for and he took credit. The day of the wedding some of the table cloths were even dirty and decorations. It's such a shame that such a beautiful venue is ran by someone so disrespectful and distasteful. It's a beautiful place but the owner and his staff are horrible. The owner was threatening to kick people out and made things very awkward. His bartender was rude and was making people bring their disposable cheap plastic cups back to the bar because he didn't buy enough. Also they ran out of sodas early. The owner made many announcements that guest found offensive and we're just plain rude. The owner was also very unprofessional and looked unprofessional. The Secret Garden was truly the most perfect place I could have ever imagined to have my wedding and reception at. Russ was my guardian angel that day, and completely took care of my every need to the fullest extent. The flowers, decorations, and everything else was done beautifully and was exactly what I wanted! Actually, even better than I envisioned. I honestly don't know how people get married without Russ! He is God's gift to brides! To really appreciate how beautiful the Garden, Palm House, and all the rest of the treasures at the Secret Garden are, you have to go see it in person. It will blow you away. It is a "Pinterest dream" cottage garden from Heaven, complete with beautiful fountains, brick pathways, a stunning waterfall, a whimsical treehouse...just go see for yourself! Russ knows exactly how to run a wedding, from his years of experience, and it is such a comfort to have an expert like Russ to run the show. I loved not having to direct anything or anyone, and yet everything happened exactly the way I wanted! I didn't have to worry about any logistics on my wedding day. I don't know how Russ does it, honestly. He has everything set up exactly right, and has thought of everything. I couldn't be happier with my experience here.
