Hotel Costa Vella - I think gin is in this photo but all I see is ice

The place is beautiful, no doubt, have been coming back every year in the summer. This time was…read moredifferent. I ordered a gin kas which is gin and a lemon drink called kas. When they came and poured the gin there was barely anything in my cup . To give you a background, most places charge you 5 euros for a drink like this and this place charges 8.50 which is fine if they served it correctly . I have attached pictures of the amount which is 1/4 of what any other place would give you. I asked the waiter to put a little more and he stated he had to ask his boss. He came back and said he would charge me again. I am disgusted and disappointed at the lack of service and the fact that they think people are not smart enough to see what they are doing . I used to refer people to this place all the time, no more . Just because you have a beautiful atmosphere doesn't mean you can rob people, awful!

Hands down, this is the best hotel in Santiago! Get a room with a gallery overlooking the courtyard…read moreif you can. Clean rooms, comfortable beds, free wifi. Bathrooms have luxurious rain head showers. At check-in, we received a book by the hotel on where to eat, drink and what to see in town. Very thoughtful! The courtyard is fantastic. We loved having our wine, breakfast and afternoon coffee outside among the apple & lemon trees while listening to the tranquil fountain. By far, this is the best hospitality I've ever received when traveling. Javier & Roberto went above and beyond during the booking process. Once there, Javier helped us make dinner reservations, answered all our questions, and provided some laughs. I loved their Tarta de Santiago so much, Javier even ordered one for me upon request. You can tell that the employees here are very passionate about the hotel. The hotel is in walking distance to all the main sites. Discounted parking is nearby. Definitely stay here!

Far from the main section of town, right next to a railroad. Just a basic room with no special…read morecharacter. The restaurant had horrible, bland food. First of all, we were told dinner started at 7, ( that's when the restaurant opened.) We were starving pilgrims from the camino and went in at 7. We were told to wait because a group of 8 pilgrims had to be seated and served 1st. Why? That would never happen in the US. We were finally "allowed" to come in when a few other pilgrims were crowding the entrance. Our 1st course was "cream of vegetable" soup, it was bland cloudy broth. My husband had "curry chicken and rice", it was white rice with just a few peas, chunks of carrots with minimal amount of curry flavor and the tiniest ONE drumstick of what was to be chicken. I had the fried Hake. It was the size of a deck of cards, looked fried, but the inside was still raw and I had to send it back ( with a small scoop of peas as a side) The breakfast the next morning was bread, or croissant, cup of yogurt and watery coffee that was served out of a kettle by the staff, not the typical European coffee machine that we have seen in all the other hotels on the camino. I feel this place was doing a minimal and least expensive effort with the money that has been prepaid by the pilgrims on this part of the camino route. This was, by far, the worst night of our 40 nights on the camino Portuguese. No pictures were taken, no need for this memory. The only good thing I can say about this hotel-restaurant is that the young woman that checked us in was very friendly. ( No one was working the front desk in the morning when we were leaving and placing our luggage for pick by the luggage transfer company our travel agent arrange. )
