Their organization is very small so I think it tends to be overlooked but it's evident that they care about the dogs in their care. One of the things that initially caught my eye about them is that the volunteers were actually taking their rescues out to the dog park as a group which I consider to be a really nice sentiment since not all rescues do that. By chance, I was able to talk to Erin & was able to have some insight about their rescue, their process with their dogs & what they were looking for when it came to a foster family. My boyfriend & I had the privilege of fostering Chiquita & it was such a pleasant experience. We primarily talked to Adriana & her husband Alex who answered all of our questions & were very patient with us. So if they take a little time getting back to someone on an application, it's because they all have jobs, families, and pets of their own! I first came in contact with A Home 4Ever Rescue when shopping at PetSmart. All the volunteers were very friendly and helpful. They let us spend time with different dogs and explained the adoption process to us. I appreciate how they really take their time to make sure the placement is a fit for both the adopter and the dog. Opinion on this rescue hasn't changed, esp. as I've become more involved in the rescue world. Please note that they have seven 5-star reviews in a two-week span in Jan 2023, some of those reviews praising practices on the part of the rescue (grooming, helpfulness of their team) that had been criticized in earlier one-star reviews. This is suspicious to me. I think it's important to look through all sources (not just the most recent reviews on yelp) when thinking about doing business with this rescue. If you look back just a little further, out of the 9 reviews they had last year, six were one-star (including my original review). To me, that says something. I had been looking for the right dog for 3 years. It was a Saturday and I was off to Trader Joe's for my usual weekly shopping, but it was nice out and there were these little "Adoption" signs pointing to the adjacent PetSmart. So I followed them. A Home 4 Ever Rescue was set up and they had the cutest small and mid-sized dogs. Henry was in the furthest cage with his back to the people staring at the wall. I asked the women volunteering, "What about this one?" I was told, he is only available for Foster. He's been returned a couple of times because he was not warming up and not a snuggly dog. (We say that his cuteness is also his curse because he does not want to be carried everywhere and he is not a lapdog.) Henry turned to look at me with the saddest eyes I have ever seen. He let out a huge sigh and then turned and put his head down again. Yep...this dog needs me. Erin asked if I wanted to hold him...so I did...for an hour. She gave me the information and paperwork on what it means to foster and I took it home to my other half who said he would come with me the next Saturday to meet him. Luckily, he was in love as much as I was. We fostered for many months and decided he was the perfect fit for our family. It's now two years later, we are a foster fail story, and seeing this sweetheart blossom and lose his fear of us has been a huge gift. He still runs if you sneeze, but it's only a few feet now compared to him heading to a different floor when we first brought him home. He is my constant shadow and absolutely loves to join me on hikes and beach walks and can convince my other half that he must have a treat by staring at him with those beautiful brown eyes. If you are looking for the right dog, talk to this rescue, talk to any rescue about the personality traits you are looking for...they know these dogs better than the shelters do and do want to find the right family so that these dogs...and you...thrive as a unit. Let me start by addressing the people that left negative reviews - I am so sorry that a dog you wanted to adopt was adopted to someone else because your emails were ignored. That is unfortunate and I did have an email also go unanswered initially. The reality is that this is a non-profit and it's made up of volunteers. Their priority is save the dogs/puppies, make sure they are well cared for, see the vet, get their shots going, etc. and then are adopted out into forever homes. If you have been to one of their adoption days at PetCo, you can see how overwhelming it is to care for so many animals or different ages, temperaments, breads, issues - along with all the people that are there looking at them - and keep things straight. My daughter found our now puppy online and went to one of the events at the pet store on 17th in Costa Mesa. We filled out an application shortly thereafter and after a few inquiries, I was contacted by the actual foster mom who put me in touch with Erin, who runs the operation. Once I got a phone number for Erin, we were able to speak and we decided to head to the next adoption day so my husband and I to meet the puppy. In the meantime, the foster (Leanne) was SUPER helpful, and texted me all kinds of info on our soon-to-be puppy. Whe took Rocco home the following week. Erin was great at the adoption event - she remembered me from our phone call, and Leanne and another volunteer foster mom, Kelly, were SO helpful once we got him home. It's been about 3 months and they still text me, to check in on us! This is a great origination that does amazing work. Please give them grace if they have not gotten back to you. With that being said, if there is a puppy you have a strong interest in, I encourage you to be a "pest" and keep trying to connect with them. *Note they will not take you seriously until you fill out the application. I know it's a lot of info to fill out, but the job of the rescue is to vet you out and make sure you have the temperament, patience and resources to give these dogs a forever home. I am so grateful for this rescue! I stumbled across one of the events they were holding at petsmart and met the sweetest dog I have ever met. Erin allowed me to foster to see if it would be a great fit and I couldn't bear the thought of giving him up after a couple of days. He is the most perfect boy and I truly couldn't imagine not having him around. Fast forward a year and I adopted my second fur baby from this rescue. Both dogs were in very bad shape with rotting teeth, fleas, mites, ticks but the rescue made sure that they received all vet care needed so that they can live comfortably. Our experience with this rescue was not good and our hearts were broken. We loved this dog and gave her our all. However! We were not told of a variety of serious issues . We fostered an adorable dog for six weeks with the intent to adopt but had to give up because she was so dangerous. The agency was extremely dishonest and operated in bad faith with us. What we were told: She was good with dogs and people (on the website in her story), She had dry eye and would have to have ointment applies 2X a day. The truth:1. She was not good with either dogs or people (Walking her was a nightmare because of the aggressive barking at both people and dogs.. 2. She had a serious eye infection that required antibiotics as well as dry eye. 3. When we met her at an adoption event she never barked and walked slowly and quietly. Her personality proved to be very dfferent and we now realize that she was sedated in order to hide her aggressive behavior 4. She exhibited viscous tooth bearing, growling behavior at times which was very dangerous and frightening. She had been returned twice before. We hired a trainer but this viscous behavior continued. When we called to tell them that we could not keep her any longer they immediately housed her at a Vet's office and put her on Trazadone! They knew the seriousness of her problems when we adopted her.and dumped her on us. Be very careful when you adopt and ask many, many questions so you know what you are getting. read more

I have a true appreciation for this rescue. I found a stray dog roaming a busy street and because I already have two dogs of my own, I did not intend on keeping her. I reached out to about 10 rescues, only 3 got back to me, and only 1 offered their help, which was A Home 4 Ever Rescue. I volunteered to foster the dog, and the rescue offered to help me find her a home and to help with medical expenses. One member in particular, Adriana, went out of her way to assist me and help find this doggie a home. This rescue is solely run by the kindness of their volunteers and I had a first hand glimpse of how much work it is. So the fact that Adriana found the time to help me, in addition to her volunteer work, and her full time job is truly amazing. They change the rules and criteria as they go!! A friend of mine looked into a specific dog they required a house with a yard, ANOTHER DOG ALREADY in the home, and a person in the home constantly (amongst other requirements) they turned my friend down because she worked and would leave the dog at home (like a normal person)... other wise "she would be perfect!" But it's ok because that dog has so many other applicants - per them! Ok cool, so this dog is PERFECT for ME then. Sweet! I apply I have a house, a yard, another dog, a person that can be with them constantly (amongst all of the other requirements). I get the email wanting to talk to me (this was over a week later), I call up INSTANTLY, now they won't let the dog go unless the person taking said dog now takes another dog with it (even though I already had two other dogs for him to play with). These people are purposely withholding animals and CREATING reasons NOT to adopt them out. Don't waste your time or your love here. GO ANYWHERE ELSE. read more

So far the best pet adoption process !! Erin is very knowledgeable about the dogs In her care and the volunteers/foster moms are so sweet. The dogs vary from large and small dogs to dogs that have to be adopted together. She brings her dogs to PetSmart and you basically wait in line and inquire about the dog you are interested in. Once you fill out a simple application (if you've been looking for a dog you know some of these places have 12 page long applications) and then she will review the app and give you feedback. I was very lucky and saw Charlie who caught my eye a few weeks back. He was new to the rescue and had to be neutered. We walked around with him and loved his laid back personality. We came back the following week and she approved adoption! Paid the rehome fee that included neutering, shots and microchip. I highly recommend this agency vs other ones. read more

When we showed up Erin literally yelled at my elderly friend that was already sad and crying cause she loves her dog. There should be no reason for someone to talk to anyone like she talked to us. I am beyond grateful for Erin and A Home 4 Ever Rescue. I rescued a sweet, stray dog, we later named Bubbles. We fostered him for 6 weeks and fell in love with this wonderful poodle. However, Bubbles was skittish around little boys and grew frustrated with the constant "in his face" attention from my young daughter. I highly recommend A Home 4 Ever! My boyfriend and I found our dream pup through Petfinder and immediately applied on their site. I didn't hear anything for about 5 days, which was fine since I knew they were volunteer-based. When I did get a call from Adriana, she immediately connected me with the foster, Sonya. They both made sure we had all the necessary documents and scheduled a meet & greet the next day. We were able to take our new puppy home and have immediately fallen in love! I have been looking for a rescue dog For a long time but all shelters are closed so where do I go

We have had a bit of experience with dog rescues as we searched for a new rescue dog to complete our family. We have found many of them to be difficult to work with. Erin was so easy-going and reasonable and a pleasure to work with. She made the process extremely easy and was very responsive to texts and questions. We just finalized our adoption of our new baby Scout (formerly called Luis) and we could not be happier with Erin, A Home 4 Ever, and Scout!!! Erin was knowledgeable and helpful and clearly took excellent care of Scout as she nursed him back to health following his pelvic fractures sustained from being hit by a car. We found a puppy that we wanted to adopt after looking for some time. We sent an email inquiring about it with some information about our family and what we are looking for. We got a reply after 3 days saying our daughter was too young for a puppy and we needed a bigger yard. I don't understand how this shelter can make these decisions before ever meeting my family. I adopted two dogs from Sherri at A Home 4 Ever in February. When I was unsure about taking both home, she allowed me to foster one for the week before committing. The adoption process was smooth and easy. Sherri was so helpful when one of our dogs did not work out for our family as well. The dog was having some problems that we tried to fix to no avail with the vet, a trainer and a behavior specialist. When there was nothing else I could do, Sherri gladly took the dog back in without any resistance or push back. She was so sweet about the transition. We still have the other dog and she is doing really well! Sherri runs a great program and helps so many animals! read more

My Husband and I had contacted this rescue about adopting a 2 year old dog, Everything was fine on the phone, the meeting was set up. When we arrived however, the second the owner of the rescue, and the foster for the dog in question saw us, they immediately looked at us like we were trash. We were by no means dressed poorly for the occasion, By that moment we knew we were dealing with racists/bigots. They decided to lead us on anyway and take us into the play area to get to know the dog and have some questions asked, seemed pointless at this stage seeing as they had already made up their minds the instant we walked up to them. After having informed them that my husband works from home, the foster decided to pry some more and ask about what I do, No need seeing as we had already told them we were at home for 90% of the time. When we had come to the point at which we'd want to make the decision to adopt or not, the foster started stammering saying that there was another family coming to look at the dog today, we asked what time, she was looking at the rescue owner dead in the eye trying to signal her to give a passable answer. It was pretty damn obvious that there was no second family, not knowing the time they would come for starters, they had their adoption event set up for around 3 hours by the way. They then told us that there were plenty more dogs out there, and it's a "big decision", having already told them that my husband and I had always grown up with dogs in the family, and to give it a think and come back with an answer. So we walked around the Petco just talking about it for 10 minutes. we decided we wanted to adopt the dog, so we made our way back to the pair, both of whom were sitting down. It took literally 2 minutes for them to acknowledge us standing beside them, and neither of them would look at us in the eye when speaking, told them we'd like to adopt the dog, then out of nowhere we're told that they're now looking for a "family with a garden so the dog can go out whenever she wants" and "not be curled up in the corner of the apartment all day", nice assumption there, how rude. We have plenty of grass in the apartment complex and she made it out as though we never take out our dogs. Keep in mind that we had filled out the application online prior, spoke on the phone, they knew our situation and yet having a garden with 24/7 access was a must. My advice is screw this rescue, Go to a shelter or poochmatch rescue where they won't discriminate you by your looks, race etc. TL;DR This rescue and it's foster are both Racists/bigots who won't let you adopt a dog unless you're an old white couple on your pension with 24/7 access to a yard. P.S. Don't believe their comment reply, half of it isn't even true, dog not "responding positively" etc. they're just trying to cover themselves. read more

A locally based rescue in my neighborhood and community of Eastside Costa Mesa, they do so much to help dogs and give them a second chance at life with loving homes and care while they get adopted. I saw my little baby girl online with this organization and met the dog named Paris last year and fell in love with her immediately. Love this rescue. They have the cutest dogs ever! There are puppies and seniors so everyone can get the dog they want. All their dogs just need love and a forever home. their priced are very cheap (200-300) and that's with them having all their shots and being spayed or neutered. Will not adopt to you if you are not like her and can't devote 100% of your time to every second of a dog's life. I can't believe this woman would not adopt to a young family with a yard, wanting to take in a dog with no home. Had the exact same plans for the dog as the people who ended up taking her weeks later (therapy animal). The only difference? New home is a couple of retirees who don't work at all-- is that the only way one can be a responsible pet owner? The owner never responded to any attempts to contact regarding a particular dog. She completely cut off the conversation abruptly with no reason and led us on about taking a pup in, saying she would call by xx date about an appointment. She then months later says that no one would take the dog that we were interested in! So the poor thing he no forever home for weeks when there was a home ready and willing. We ended up with the perfect dog from a local shelter, but we would have loved the dog she had, too. We are excellent pet parents with our shelter dog and give her more love than you can imagine. All I ask is that in the future, you are HONEST about not wanting to adopt out to a particular family and don't get their hopes up. Just tell us we are not what you are looking for, and we can move on. "I'm sorry I don't think you would be the right fit" is all you need to say. But please don't pretend like you were waiting so long for something when that's simply not true. Thank you for helping the animals, but think about the feelings and intentions of people, too. read more
