I'm an employee that works with the branch in Hattiesburg Ms an they are horrible I have never in my life worked with a company like this one, they make everything sound oh so good when you get first hired on but after working a couple weeks you'll soon realize it's a total nightmare! For one we are completely underpaid! We get no holiday pay but still expects us workers to work, then none of them in the office knows what communication is. Just like last week they were trying to drop me down from 47 hours down to 12 hours a week even though the client refused that but they were still insisting on doin so just so they could bring in another worker for training to be used as a "fill in". Oh an don't let me forget to mention that they will also tell you that when you first get hired on that you can work however many hours you want but when you try it's a big deal all because of overtime! The first red flag was that they could afford to have an answering service but the majority of the time there wasn't any staff so I contacted the Medicaid office to see when they were being charged. They didn't have the information but it wasn't long I received a document showing when medicaid had been billed and realized there were being billed for days no one was in the home. I have a very complicated health status so the days no one was in the home I had to see about my son and as a result there were times I was in so much pain I could not get off the sofa. My suspicion is that the owner either can't be bothered to run his company or is very much aware of what was going on. If it is the latter hopefully he does jailtime. read more

If you are seeking care for a loved one and would like a variety of attendants to sleep most of the day, not follow written instructions, reject client-specific training, leave the home during their shift, break household items, have inconsistent attendance and/or repeatedly leave their waste on your toilet seat then this is the company for you! If you have photographic evidence, text messages and camera footage to substantiate your concerns and complaints and would like for a highly abrasive administrator to blame you for the subpar caregivers they send to your home, then you should definitely hire AFNB. However, if you are looking for a company that cares about the needs of your disabled or elderly loved one and will not tell you than an 18 year old with no prior job experience who uses her phone all day is, "...at least a warm body who can call 911..." then you should look elsewhere. read more

The first two weeks were a revolving door of caregivers despite my request for one caregiver. Every day someone new was coming to my house (and the company does not supply their employees with masks!). Finally, I was supposed to have a permanent caregiver, but then without notice someone else showed up. It took close to a month for them to finally get me a person to take care of my dad who has dementia. When the caregivers would cancel (which was often... one woman even left the job in the middle of a shift!) despite having over 100 caregivers the would NOT find a replacement 80 percent of the time and when they didn't find a replacement you simply lost the hours (VA will not allow you to carry over the missed hours). They would call and say they were "trying," but I came to understand quickly I was on my own and anyone dealing with dementia knows how important those caregiver hours are. I sent this "review" to Joe who, not surprisingly, didn't respond. Joe is an unapologetic salesman. Matching up a caregiver to a patient (or finding a replacement when they don't show) is the least of his concerns because "we supply a service not a caregiver." When I expressed my concern his response was "you can go someplace else (and I would have done that, but it takes a month for the VA to change assignments). And it's interesting to note they pay their staff $8.00 to $10.00 an hour, but they charge families $18.00 an hour! They will want your credit card during the initial interview. Also, the bills to the VA (I get a copy) always varied even when my 11 hours were the same each week (and I'm not talking about when they didn't show up). This company's top priority is about MAKING MONEY plain and simple. I waited to write this review after my dad passed, I was afraid of repercussions. An agency can drop you and if you think dealing with dementia is stressful trying wondering every day if (and which) caregiver will show up. It's Ironic that there name is "A First Name Bases" because they are way to big to know you personally. If you want real genuine care and compassion I suggest you go somewhere else. I'm actually RELIEVED that I don't have to have someone from A FIRST NAMED BASES in my house anymore. read more

I contacted a first name basis over the Christmas holidays. I was told I need to meet with Taylor I left a message and did not received a call back. I called again and spoke with Joe he said Taylor was on vacation and pointed out to me it was the holidays. I told him I realized that and if I would have been told Taylor was on vacation I would have understood that but no one told me. After the holiday Alisha came to my office and met with me I offered her all the medical papers and forms which had all the way completed she did not want to take them. I told her I had my own staffer she said for him to go fill out an application which he did on Jan 3, he did his orientation and was hired. I waited until Jan 19th with no word I did learn from my waiver coordinator that Taylor submitted the waiver paper work but I still did not have the ESDPT paperwork. I called for Alisha who did not return my calls. My waiver coordinator called Joe and she was told they were working on it but she suggested I call Joe myself. I had faxed all the doctors paper to Joe the first week in Jan, they were provided a staffer all was need was a plan made. Joe informs me on Jan 14th that I was missing signatures and paperwork. I told him I could not believe I am just being told this now (6 working days later). I told him to email the paperwork to me and I will have it signed by the doctor and I will fill out my part and sign it. He proceeds to tell me there is no need to be hostile, I was not being hostile I was upset that they have not even started my paperwork and I am so desperate. I sent him an email thinking that would be better because I was not being me, however I was being stern because they had did nothing on my case. I told him I was not hostile just very desperate and need help. Well that was no help he sent me a very unpleasant email. I received a call from Joe telling me that no one in him office wanted to deal with me so they would not take my case. I asked him about my staffer he told me that was his employee and he could not talk to me about that. So I am thinking he is trying to steal my staffer. I do realize there is two sides to every story but I am telling everyone who needs help stay away from this company they are slow and they are not looking out to help you. I called another company gave them the paperwork and the staffer filled out employment paperwork with them. They complete my paperwork in 1 day and the insurance company has it. so they did in less then 24 hours what this company could not do in 3 weeks. That should give anyone an idea that they do not process paperwork quickly and do not care that us people who have handicap and sick people need help and things need to be handled efficiently. I tried to contact someone hire than Joe because if really did not want to put this on yelp, I thought handling it in house was more business like. However the will not give you the supervisors information higher than Joe. I did find out from the Mississippi office his name was Jeff but he would not return my call so I just give up and put this on yelp so people know this before they enter a contract with this company. Believe me they are nice until you sign the paperwork and be careful providing your own staffer with them, thank god my was loyal and stayed with me. We all know its very hard to get a good one because they are not paid much. read more

My elderly mother broke her knee cap in half and required surgery. Afterward, she had to use a wheelchair and walker to get around while supervised by me. I didn't have any help and after nine days of this I needed a break so I called "A First Name Basis" and hired a sitter. That sitter was over an hour late. AN HOUR! Meanwhile, I had an appointment and had to leave the house. So I was making frantic phone calls and all anyone would say was "there was a miscommunication." That's it. They never got any more specific than that when I demanded an explanation. When I called after my appointment and asked the sitter why she was late, SHE GAVE ME ATTITUDE! She said the company misinformed her of the address or didn't inform her of the address at all. And she said, "Why? Is there a problem here?" in a very confrontational tone. Unbelievable! "The trusted face of in-home care?" I think not. read more

This is a review of the In-home caregiver service, not the assisted living home with the same name. We've used A First Name Basis for over ten years. In general, they try to match caregivers with their client's needs; however, they suffer from frequent turnovers and their track record when substitutes are needed is terrible. The office is usually apologetic, but the issue remains. The office staff do try to resolve other issues quickly and to the customer's satisfaction, but this particular issue has been a thorn in our relationship.
