Casa Bertagni is a villa/mansion turned into a guest house. It is run by an Italian couple. It's…read morelike a luxurious bed and breakfast. It is located in a quiet part of the city but is within an easy walking distance from the main square, Piazza Maggiore. While I don't think it's in a bad neighborhood, the front gate is always locked and the hallway doors are also lock around the clock. The decor is eclectic (or even funky). See my photos. You will be the judge. It's an old building but is clean and well maintained. Our room was clean and spacious. Lots of storing space and a high ceiling. The AC worked great, too. The breakfast was one of the highlights. Both the quality and the selection are excellent. The photos speak for themselves. If I go back to Bologna, I will definitely stay here. I highly recommend Casa Bertagni to anyone! ***************************** If you found something useful in my review, please hit "useful" to let me know. My wife and I usually stay in apartments utilizing multiple services for our reservations. Casa Bertagni showed me what I was missing. Our room was large, with an amazingly comfortable bed, and easy to regulate heat/AC. The bathroom had a double head rain shower and the nicest, thick towels. Viscount Guido, an architect by trade and nature, is Philippe Starck, Kelly Wearstler, Marcel Wanders, Timothy Corrigan etc. wrapped up in one package, His designs at Casa Bertagni are whimsical and beautiful. There was so much to look at, and travelers feel enveloped in luxury. The staff is kind, friendly, warm and ridiculously accommodating. This has to be the very best place to stay in Bologna. I would like to clone Casa Bertagni.

Dessert was chocolate fudge cake with whipped topping on the side. The air conditioning was perfect on a very hot day. I would highly recommend this place for coffee and pastries.

The Fuori Porta Due bed and breakfast is in an old Italian flat on a first floor (one floor above…read moreground). It has a small balcony with a small table and two chairs on which you can take a coffee, breakfast or smoke a cigarette (as smoking is prohibited in buildings in Italy). We stayed in a double bed room and had our own bathroom. The bathroom had a power shower with very strong water flow, and it proved to be refreshing in the mornings or after a long day in Italian sun. The bathroom and the whole flat was immaculate. Although they change the sheets and towels every four days, even though they changed the floor towel every day. Our room was spacious, had a nice bed with a firm mattress and 2 firm pillows, although I was very happy when I found two very soft pillows in the wardrobe and swapped them. The furniture is old and gives a 60's atmosphere: I felt as though I was in one of the Sophie Loren's films. The TV was old and had then main Italian channels, no english channels. There was an old radio but we didn't try it. One main drawback of the B&B is lack of air conditioning. This made our day and nights hot but we used the large fan in the room. The breakfast was self-serve and they had coffee (both espresso caffetiere and drip-style), cornflakes, long lasting milk (not fresh, to my displeasure), juice, italian biscuits and jam. The cost was 60 euros per night per room. They also had two other rooms one of which had 3 single beds and the other 2 single beds. This B&B would be excellent for a large family or large group of friends who can rent out the whole place. When we stayed there was an old man from Calabria and another man. You shouldn't sleep in too long as they come in around 9 am to clean up after breakfast and clean the bathrooms. The noise made our sleep impossible after 9:30 am. Overall, I was pleased with the B&B as it made a nice change from hotels. We felt like we were Italian and lived there (we had proper flat keys: 4 of them: one for the outside building door, one for the metal flat door, one for the wooden flat door and one for the room).

We were in a 2 level flat where Luigina and her husband lived upstairs. We had open access to the living room as well as the kitchen. Even though our room was next to the kitchen, there was no noise issue as there is an additional sliding door that encloses our room and bathroom. Since the building is in a quiet side street, there was no street noise issue either. Luigina also has another flat in the same building that is also part of the B&B. Luigina and her husband were sweet, kind and thoughtful hosts. They accommodated our early check-in so we could drop off our luggage after coming into Bologna in the morning via train from Florence. You can really see the thoughtfulness in the small touches, from the bottled water in the room, to Luigina asking our pastry preferences so she can prepare the breakfast (included) spread. The location is fantastic, within the city core. Within a block there are ATMs, a supermarket, and local restaurants and cafes. We walked everywhere to all the major sights. For example, it's about a 15min walk to Piazza Maggiore. Thanks to the Bologna porticos, we didn't even need umbrellas. Wish we had more time to spend in Bologna. Would definitely call on Luigina again on our next visit!
