Cupid Dash half marathon (13.1 miles)

GREAT RACE COMPANY!! If you want to run a race and avoid massive crowds and avoid expensive runs, but still get all the perks of a timed race, morale boost with people cheering, a medal, and a goodie bag with treats and water: THIS IS YOUR COMPANY. I've run two half marathons and a 15K through them. They're AMAZING. They have a 5K, 10K, 15K, and half marathon distance for their races. They usually take place once in Long Beach and once in Santa Monica throughout the year. They have a TON OF DATES (almost every month). It's not super crowded but still enough people to keep you motivated. They have a photographer on course. They post the photos and the timing/standings shortly after the race. The people are extremely friendly. They give you a bag with bananas, snacks, water, and electrolytes. During the race, they have a water station with Gatorade & Gu gels. It's so nice!! And the races are extremely cheap and affordable. Couldnt recommend them more. Super happy I was able to find them. For the last one, my friend and I got injured, so we emailed to change to a later race date. They got back within minutes and changed our dates for free. It was amazing service!

Finishers medal for the Awesome 10k run in Santa Monica.

Recently I decided to sign up for a couple of 10 & 15k races, since these races have a large number of participants you have to provide proof of your race time/pace so you don't get stuck in the open corral with people that may be walking or pushing strollers during the race. I found A Better World Racing online and saw they have races just about every weekend across LA in Long Beach, Santa Monica, Van Nuys, Hunnington Beach, & some other cities. The races are affordable $17 - $30 for 5, 10, & 15k races depending on when you sign up & I believe the 1/2 & full marathon are around $40-$50. The organizers are a small group of 7-10 people from what I remember. Because it's a small group & the race prices are low there aren't any goodie bags or T-shirts but everyone does get a finishers medal, and there are post race snacks (bananas & granola bars) & water/Gatorade at the finish line. My race & from the descriptions I've seen online most of the races are loops on a 5k course so if you're going to do a half marathon don't expect a 13 miles run around the city. With it being on a course & each race having a limited number of participants there aren't medical units on site so keep that in mind. Checking in & getting your race bib was an easy process you just check in 30 minutes before your race starts, and again since there's a limited number of people they have each race checking in doesn't take long. They post the race results/times on their website, & race photos are on their facebook page. I was able to take a screen shot of my race time from their website & use that to qualify for a better starting coral for my up coming races. If you're training for a large race in the future & need proof of your time or you just want to see how you run in an actual race compared to how you do when you're just training I'd definitely recommend looking into one of their races.

This year the course, instead of at Rancho Alamitos, was at Bolsa Grande, another one of our district's amazing high schools. The proceeds benefit Rancho's Track & Field team, and I am in complete support of that. In fact, it was not only nice to see some of my former students running, but many of them were volunteering as well, encouraging runners along the route and handing out medals at the finish. In either case, their being involved (and getting up extra early on a Saturday) was much appreciated and worthy of applause. Whether running or walking--students, family members, and teachers alike--came out pumped up and ready to run. An event that promises continued growth and popularity, the Rancho 5K is one race that I am always happy to attend. Go Vaqueros!

Nutrients and…read morerevitalization galore! + Well marked race map provided beforehand. + Their website has an informative, detailed FAQ section. - Crowded, inefficient shuttle from HB Civic Center to the race event. Parking lot was overwhelmed and the line of 50+ runners moved slow. Despite its farther proximity from the race compared to closer lots like Pacific City mall, many still parked at CC cuz it's free. + Thankfully free residential street parking behind CC that morning. + Nice that they include DJs and music to amp up the ambience. - Not sure why the race start alley was fenced off. Made it hard and inaccessible to join the race once thousands of runners had poured in. + The entire trail was well marked and sectioned off. You never get lost throughout your run. Many traffic marshalls and volunteers present to help keep you on trail. + Good amount of hydration stations (water + gatorade) spread throughout the track. . The only additional supplements were GU chews. For the 1/2marathon, this station was only placed once, halfway through the track. -- SUPER crowded. Could not run my own pace cuz constantly struggling to shoulder past high concentrations of slow runners. Scored far below my goal time. - Sporadic congested runner traffic. It'd be nice if the slow ppl or walkers kept to the right to leave the left side for the joggers/runners. + Hundreds of spectators come to cheer runners on. - Some of the aid stations were ill-prepared or behind. Runners piling up and the volunteers were out of Gatorade or struggling to quickly fill the cups. - They didn't provide a map of the event area (gear check, sponsors, food trucks, bike lock, etc) - Even the workers/volunteers there didn't know where key spots were. - Event didn't clearly designate the bus pickup spot. The transportation map just vaguely designated bus pickup to be something like "on Pacific View Ave between 1st St and Beach Blvd". Turns out the exact bus pickup spot was at Pacific View Ave & Huntington St. Wish they told us this beforehand more clearly (and provided coordinates). - Should post a large flag/banner at that bus pickup intersection. - Even the traffic controllers weren't sure where the pickup buses were arriving. - The buses aren't labeled nor announced where they're going. - Event neglected to preinform us that the shuttle back doesn't go straight from the race back to the Civic Center. It detours to drop some runners off at Edison HS, which adds 10-15min to the bus ride. Had I known, I'd prob have sought nearer parking for the race and just biked the rest of the way. - They're slow to update their website photo link [https://www.runsurfcity.com/photos], despite photos already being out. - Lotta spam email, both before and well after the event. Lotta advertising too. For ~$200, I didn't expect the cons:pros ratio so high. Tip: pack amino gels/chews and your own hydration.

The big peeve this year is the start time of the 5k which moved to 11:00am, so with the starting waves, the actual start time is closer to 11:15. Problem with this late start time is the California heat in winter, which by noon is close to 29 degrees Celsius. If this had been summer, the temp around noon is closer to 35 degrees Celsius The time also kills the whole day (can't really do anything before the race and by the time the race is done and you are out it's close to 2pm. My suggestion is to bring back the earlier start time or at least have the latest start at 9:00am.

From what I understand the location varies between Mile Square Park, Garden Grove Park or OC Fairgrounds-- so look for flyers, announcements or communication each year. The 2025 Year of Snake festival was held at Garden Grove Park. The place was PACKED. I had to do several U-turns and drove rounds to locate the entrance due the congestion and lack of signage to direct traffic. Once a parking space is secured, the lines to purchased tickets were disorganized - one for cash vs card but again you don't really see the delineation until you reached the front. The organizers need to have signs posted higher for better visibility. Upon entering the festival grounds, it's sensory OVERLOAD. There's sooo much booths selling goods, foods and lots of large companies joining to celebrate the Lunar New Year. There's tons of free swags if you're willing to stay in line to spin wheels for cookies, totes, drinks, etc. There's also lots of decoration for pictures. It's amazing so many events-goers dressed up in the Vietnamese costumes. Very pretty!!! Overall, I think it's great atmosphere and fun area for community to come together to celebrate this important holiday.

I read that it is "perfectly unorganized" and those are perfect words to describe it! It is organized enough that there is no chaos and people all do what they need to do, but it is so perfectly laid back that it's like there are no rules. It's just clean dirty fun! You even get a medal at the end! The Color Run has a party atmosphere and is not timed. There is no clock to beat, there are no times to record. You just start about the time you are supposed to start and finish before they start taking everything down. But you'll get pumped, you'll get colored, you'll find that adrenaline to make it a race all your own! They do start you in guestimated waves. While waiting for your wave to start they toss prizes at you, pump music for you, and get you all ready to take off in sheer excitement! The excitement keeps on going all the way to the after-party! This Huntington Beach location is perfect! You are in the parking lot and right up next to the sand. The mighty Pacific is in view the entire route. Even footing and no hills or dips. Parking is a bit tricky. Make sure you get there early and prepare to either pay or walk a ways. I suggest that you have your race package sent to you at home prior to the Run, that way you don't have to take all your stuff back to your car. Your stuff and anything with you on the route will be COLORED by the end. Check out the website to find out tips and suggestions; keeping the color in, getting the color out, keeping your cell phone safe, etc. This literally IS the HAPPIEST 5K ON THE PLANET!!! Cheers!!!

I am ever so grateful to my friend ( a color run veteran) who would not let me say no, and dragged my butt out of bed to do this race, because it was a lot of fun. We got down there early and snagged metered parking on the street. Picked up bibs and t-shirts and then went to look at vendors and pick up some free stuff (hippeas are awesome!). We then dropped the stuff off back at the car and put on our bibs and t-shirts. When we got back to the pre-race area there was a DJ and a gal doing some warm-ups. While she did warm-ups, he was throwing goodies into the crowd. Note: make sure you bring someone tall with you that can nab those goodies out of the air. We're all a bunch of shorties and got nada! We made our way to the race start, and after a bit of a late start, we got rollin'. In the race packet they give you a head-band type of thing, and after the first dousing of color I figured out it was better to cover my face with it rather than my hair. Note: bring some water with you. The color areas are very dusty and you will get pretty thirsty. Pretty standard out and back, with 5 color areas. No water stations, and HB bathrooms suck, so hit the porta potties before you start. Also, have some towels in the car to sit on for the ride home. Even if you take off the t-shirt, you will have that color dust EVERYWHERE! I had a lot of fun and would definitely do it again.
