WFHB features an "eclectic mix" of music, rich in jazz, international, blues, quirky classic rock, local and cutting edge indie music. The station maintains a selection of the latest releases in most genres, and programmers are free to choose 50% of their playlist from these selections, and play 50% of their own selections. The result is an always entertaining and interesting mix. You just never know what you'll hear next, but it will very likely be good. The WFHB News and Public Affairs department delivers the most comprehensive daily newscast devoted to the Bloomington and South-central Indiana area every weekday at 5:30 pm. They also feature specialized news programming devoted to specific subcultures, such as weekly shows for the Gay, Hispanic, African-American, and political communities. National and International news are represented by such syndicated programs as Democracy Now!, Free Speech Radio News, and The Shortwave Report. Perhaps the best thing about WFHB is that it is entirely run by community volunteers (along with three paid staff), who have complete control over what is broadcast. It's radio by and for the people, and its broadcast reflects that. Anyone with an interest in broadcasting, whether as a music or news programmer, or a behind-the-scenes support person, is welcome and encouraged to participate. Just to stress once again: this establishment is fully operational as of May 2014, and has been consistently since 1993. I love WFHB, and bet you will too. Give it a try at 91.3 FM, or streaming at www.wfhb.org

WFPK FM Radio Louisville - Soul Asylum on-air studio performance

The WFPK station was originally a stand alone local public radio station and has now consolidated resources at this location. We were thrilled to be invited to the private studio facilities to view a live on-air performance by Soul Asylum for a 1/2 hour Saturday segment. The band was in town to perform at the Bourbon and Beyond Concert in September 2024. Introductions and interview were conducted by radio host Kyle Meredith and meet-and-greet was held afterward with lead singer Dave Pirner !!!

Doors open at 11:30, show starts at noon, and they are finished at 1. You can just brown-bag your own meal, or if you're a public radio member you can make arrangements for a free sandwich from City Cafe. The studio is great, and the musicians are better. I've seen touring acts like the Dirty Guv'nahs and Jason Isbell here, but I've enjoyed even more being introduced to local musicians like Houndmouth and Ben Sollee. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that the shows here are so satisfying that I usually don't bother to go see the bands play their paid gigs afterward. (But I do tend to throw the musicians a bone by buying their CDs.) The down side? Well, the performance studio is limited to 70 people, which means there are no guarantees, unless you're willing to line up early. And because you want to get there a few minutes early, you're committing yourself to a full siesta -- an hour and a half or more -- something most of us working stiffs can't afford during a workday. I only wish I could play hookey more often. As it is, I try to carefully reward myself every few months. Rarely am I disappointed when I go. Check their website for the schedule.
