If you listen during the day, it seems that they hand over their microphones to any yahoo or weirdo off the street with really far out ideas. The programmers seem to say to the long-haired barefoot bearded guy yelling at traffic, "Hey, why don't you come in here and preach your rants over the airwaves?!" The news on here seems to be on a purely local and biased basis. But that's okay, it's good to get the local viewpoints on things! It's nice to hear local politicians getting on the air and answering constituents' questions and addressing their concerns. I listen to KBOO over TuneIn online, but mainly tune in at night when they're not doing call in talk radio, and are just spinning the weirdest, most eclectic songs and bands. If you listen to this station long enough in the evenings, you're sure to find out some weird local bands. It seems that they play a lot of local acts and weirder stuff that's all pretty far out there. In all, it seems like this station is like if "Wayne's World" ran a radio station. The station doesn't have advertisements like other radio stations. It's a non-profit community radio station that is listener funded.

FANTASTIC station. PhDs of 50s/60s rock at the controls here. I stumbled on this just turning the dial on my FM tuner. Keep up the stellar work. I am a listener of MANY categories of music from bluegrass to hard rock to classical and everything in between but often find myself tuning in to 95.1 FM for hours at a time, sometimes all day. Thankfully, the station's been sold into local hands again (Alpha Broadcasting) and hopefully will remain fully-staffed. KINK is pretty 'mellow' but at the same time does have hosts and new music that you won't hear anywhere else - except maybe on KNRK 94/7. I stream KINK online from Seattle because frankly, there's no commercial station like it up here. I miss being able to just click on the radio and have a general quality rock song available either on K-I-N-K or on 94/7. Not sure why the station changed their name to "Kink dot FM" while I lived there in 2006, though.

Sure it was entirely composed of mainstream pop, but it still had the morning show that was as unique as they are around the country. It is amazing to me that Nelson did not bolt for national notoriety because he was a man of many voices, outrageous humor, and was probably censored by station management and the FCC a lot more than he lead on. When he bolted to Rosie 105, the station had to work around him and John Murphy and the rest of the crew began fizzling. Their prizes were lucrative and exciting, but now are reduced to local events prizes and some cash money. The DJs (read: ZJs) that are now in the line up are uninspiring and tend to sound like they wish they were working somewhere else. They are all people offering different voices but the same music, which is your teeny bop, wannabe cool, high school fascinated pop music. 95.5 seems like it had the upper hand when it came to the rest of the young niche they were looking to market to, but ultimately they're all lumped in the same sad group of Portland radio stations.

Alternative metal still exists here, but its a lot more sparse than it used to be. The Portland music scene is not to be found here, as a majority of the song list is nationally produced with little local emphasis. The actual DJs are semi-entertaining but they have endured a bit of turnover (as do most stations) and the last batch was subpar at best. I was always appalled that they played Tai Mai Shu's Freestyle ("Tie My Shoe" - A mocking Chinese internet hit), which is hip hop and can be seen as racially insensitive. I wonder if they still play that crap today.
